On a slight side note, is it just me, or has the average quality of dubs been going steadily up, lately?
Some dubs are tolerable, but it largely depends on the company. ADV generally has better dubs than say, 4kids or Manga. I don't have the tolerance for shitty dubs to watch most of them to find out though.

In the last few years, Funimation has gone from the butt of everyone's jokes to having some of the best dubs out there.

That's because the Japanese only have a decade or two lead on the English speaking voice actor community. And obviously, as more money is spent on domestic releases, the bigger the budget 'the next big thing' is going to get.

It's been a good while since I've heard a genuinely bad dub. Even back in the day, the worst I really ever saw was the slaughter of plot, not acting. And honestly, spoken Japanese grates on me like nails on a chalkboard. (Especially "Generic Teenage Girl" voice, although that one annoys me no matter the language...)

Want to see a genuinely bad dub? Go watch Love Hina or Ranma 1/2. I'm sure you can find clips on Youtube that demonstrate its awfulness. Although my main complaint about dubs is that after watching a show in Japanese, and then again in English, the amount of change due to English actors not getting the emotions or personality quite right can be drastic.

That, and the apparently inexplicable need of dubs to put extra lines in where there's only one line of spoken Japanese...or even when there's nothing being said in the original. It really kills a good scene when someone is talking about their "ultimate attack" or some such with their mouth not moving.

Because that was totally my point.

*snicker* Oh god... Keitrao's voice. And the rest... Hah, especially vaugly British Kaola. That was... hilariously bad.

One of the few shows I've seen subbed. I'll have to agree it got pretty bad treatment, though it was hardly an epic show prior. It was mainly about Keitaro being pathetic, and then getting kicked to the horizon for little to no provocation.

As for Ranma, never saw it in any form, but it was one of the first I'd ever heard about being in english, so that's no surprise.
