Lord of the Rings

Redwall (first 3-4 though, never read any of the later ones)

And this really big book of various Sci-Fi writers including Issac Asimov (forgot the name, it's burried under a pile of sharp pointy things) :D
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

The entire Dune series, including the prequels. Yes, it may be co-written by KJA, but the prequels flesh out some of the characters that we didnt see much in the original books, like Fenring, Shaddam IV, Liet Kynes, and so on. The thing that got me to read the series was the sci-fi channel miniseries, then I bought House Atreides because I wanted to read the series in the proper order of timeline.

I could only pick one really
Waylander - by David Gemmel

A little quote which helps illustrate what I like about it....

S

P

O

I

L

E

R

'Did life ever make sense to you, Waylander?'

'Yes. A long time ago before I learned about eagles.'

'I do not understand you.'

That pleases me,' said the warrior, pillowing his head on his saddle and closing his eyes.

'Please explain,' urged Dardalion. Waylander rolled to his back and opened his eyes, staring out beyond the stars.

'Once I loved life and the sun was a golden joy. But joy is sometimes short-lived, priest. And when it dies a man will seek inside himself and ask: Why? Why is hate so much stronger than love? Why do the wicked reap such rich rewards? Why does strength and speed count for more than morality and kindness? And then the man realises . . . there are no answers. None. And for the sake of his sanity the man must change perceptions. Once I was a lamb, playing in a green field. Then the wolves came. Now I am an eagle and I fly in a different universe.'

'And now you kill the lambs,' whispered Dardalion.

Waylander chuckled and turned over.

'No, priest. No one pays for lambs.'

though I generally dislike the EU I think Showdows of the Empire is one of the best books I have read.

Anything by Phillip K Dick is generally excellent...

Dune rocks, though they get worse as they go on...

The Red Dwarf & Hitchhikers Guide books are damned good...

The 40K Novels are very good, especially the Gaunts Ghosts books, very, very good...

1984, Brave New World & Fahrenhiet 451 are all very good too...

...and Asimovs short stories are good, though IMO any book of his with more than 200 pages generally sucks eg 'Forward the Foundation, etc' - the shorter the better, IMO

I love the dune series. I actually like the later books better, I haven't really warmed to the prequels though.

The first two Red Dwarf books were great, the next two were ok, but lacked the quality that the first two had with Rob Grant and Doug Naylor working together.

As for fantasy, I have never read much fantasy, never really liked it that much, but I must get round to reading LOTR some day.

Not that they're the best by any stretch, but if you guys like Timothy Zahn his Conqueror's trilogy is pretty good.

pretty much everything Heinlein (though the later stuff gets positively weird)
Asimov ROCKS (even when it's longer than 200 pages :) )
Zahn, especially the Conquerors trilogy
the EU, of course
Terry Pratchett (not just Discworld)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (excluding Mostly Harmless)
Adam's Dirk Gently books
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'
