I suppose it would be more fair to the yamato if it was TNG style wallowing about like beached whales in space combat

I do not dispute the Enterprise can use its superior maneuverbility to basically get out of Yamato's gun arcs, but Batman seemed to imply that there was no way the yamato could roll to unmask her guns to a relatively slow target directly above her.

I just finished the first season. What a good show. Classic space opera...

But yeah, the forcefield was just a blatant act of writer's fiat to wrap things up neatly... which isn't so bad, since the whole final showdown was basically contrived anyway, and I don't have a big problem with one contriviance being ended by another.

I don't think Space Battleship Yamato has been officially subtitled and licensed for English-speaking audiences. However, the series was dubbed and adapted for American markets in the late 70s, re-titled as Star Blazers; from what I've heard the adaptation was very faithful to the original material, with most of the cuts just being violence, drinking (the doctor drinks sake like water), and fan-service.

All of the movies are available in America, but you only really need to watch Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato.

They also had to change the cultural references somewhat, but the first two seasons were very faithful and had a well-rounded cast. The eventual third series, however, is a dog's breakfast.

I have seen SBY episodes with subtitles on YouTube; don't know if they're part of the DVD package or not, but it makes for some interesting differences in places.

Yes. I had that movie in my library. One of the many volumes lost to the New Orleans flood.

The subtitled episodes of Yamato are just fansubs. They are really nicely done though. They even translated the random notes at the beginning and end of each episode.
