Gaunts Ghosts: Only In Death (Spoilers)

Post by Dartzap »

I noticed the other day that OiD had finally appeared in shops, however, I am but a poor, desperte soul, and I'm unable to afford such extravagances..bah. :( So, my fellow 40k'ers Have you got it yet? And is it any good? Give us a review of the usual Good, bad and ugly bits, heh.

Also nice to know: Armour of Contempt is out in paperback on Wednesday...which I will probably be able to afford.
EBC: Northeners, Huh! What are they good for?! Absolutely nothing! :P

Confirmation on the rumour of Gaunt dying in the first few chapters, or at all would be appreciated along with normal spoilers. :)

Seconded. Also, I hear it's not set on Gereon at all. So, what happens to it?

Have a very nice day.

Only in Death ?

I've had it since september

HUGEO MASSIVEO SPOILERS>>>>>DON'T READ ARSEHOLES IF YA DON'T WANT OT BE SPOILED!

He isn't dead, but by fucking god I best he wishes he was at some point, lets just say that Shoggy wouldn't have been one of a kind.

If you say that to a certain degree the Ghosts books have resembled various war film genres among other things, OiD is basically the horror movie/mindfuck of the series, with some pretty tragic/emotional moments in it to go along with the some rather disturbing imagery.

Harks journal entries are a nice touch as well, and the penultimate reunion with a certain character (not gaunt) is....well, its pretty fucking horrendous actually, but in a good way.

I liked it, and I think Dan Abnett has finished off this cycle of novels in really great style.

What rumour? Abnett stated it specifically himself in an interview prior to Traitor General being released. Anyway I like it a lot.
Its set on a Fortress World called Jago which has fortifications all over the planet beneath the surface and inside the rather extensive mountain ranges. One of the fortresses mentioned in it is ~100km long.

Its a slaughterfest with plenty recognisable character names from past books getting killed off, and the Ghosts getting haunted by the ghosts of dead Ghosts.

My only gripe is with the technological consistency, specifically the Hotshot packs which have now all been reduced to one shot per pack with no explanation despite them constantly getting multiple shots before hand.

Well, Larks at least carries both regular and hotshot packs, so it's possible that he's simply using regular ones when it doesn't mention him reloading.

When I say before hand, I mean in previous novels.
