Doctor Who; the Encyclopedia

Post by andrewgpaul »

Had a quick look at this in Borders yesterday. For trivia geeks, there's some interesting bits in there (like, for instance, the ranks/positions of Caan, Jast, Sec and Thay in the Dalek military before they formed the Cult of Skaro, and the fact that Daleks are telepathic). Most of it's stuff we already knew from the shows. It does have a 'spoiler' section at the beginning; "here's some words we could include if we ever do a new edition". Most of them are to do with Voyage of the Damned, but there's some others which look like hints of series 4.

"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

Daleks are telepathic? Where does THAT come from? Has there been any indication of that before?

In the EU? Constantly, just look at "Dalek Empire", especially the first & third series (With the Dalek Emperor's possesion).

Indeed there has. They're Telekinetic. In Death to the Daleks they are able to operate when all electrical power is drained, by moving themselves by psychokinetic force, and using backup firearms in place of their normal guns. Dalek Sec was telepathic, or had some telepathy-inducing technology, possibly related to the system they use to remotely control human devices in Parting of the Ways and Doomsday. Mr Diagoras talks about him putting images into his mind from far away.

The DWM comic serial Children of the Revolution shows the good daleks from Evil of the Daleks further developed into a peaceful culture, with further advanced mental powers, able to pick up and move objects with their minds, and mentions that their mental powers were only really able to develop when they were freed from traditional Dalek dogma. Perhaps Sec developed a telekinetic ability due to overcoming much of his own programming.

Its an actual book with paper pages and everything so you'd have to go out and buy one.

Although I'm sure there are several on line versions made by fans.
