It isn't "invincible and god-like" in relation to other civilizations in the Cuture books, but it is still the most powerful civilization that is known (excluding the excession).
There are the Homonda which were superior to the Culture in Consider Phlebas, and at least equal by the time of Player of Game and Look to Windward. In the latter, it is IIRC stated that 12 civilizations in the Galaxy have technology equal or close to the Culture's one, and that 7 of them should theoretically be military able to fight the Culture and possibly defeat it.
Yes, theoretically. However, most civilizations can Sublime and become an Elder civilization.

Finally pushed aside enough of my laziness to de-lurk, so I suppose a "hi" is in order. I'm a veteran of warcraftiii.net and scraftghost.net forums, but I don't suppose that means much here  *braces for mass pokings*

Back on topic, I have 1 of my own, and am a partial contributor to two others.

1- "Oasis Quadrant": A good while in the future, and there's actually a fairly well-fleshed-out backstory. Humanity discovered interstellar travel a few millenia before, and carved an empire out of the surrounding races' territories. Then, in typical Human fasion, the empire split in half, tore itself apart in a Civil War, and was conquered by a race called "Mendalins". THOSE guys eventually got whipped by another race, and ever since then, a barely-coherent Humanity and its allies have been fighting for their survival.

Each race has their own advantages and ways of fighting. For example, Humans love blowing stuff up from far away, and have the (literally) unbeatable starfighters and uber-howitzers to show for it, but their tech is only mediocre, and they're some of the worst in an outright pounding match (on ground AND in space). The Mendalin, on the other hand, use tech that's worse than what they're capable of (KISS) and have virtually no artillery to speak of, but can outfight pretty much anything 5 to 1 up close (in space) and up to 10 to 1 (on ground). Each race tries to force the others to fight on their terms, as it gives them an advantage (Humans try to keep at a distance and pick away at an enemy, while the "Avvoni" use lightning-fast hit and run).

Each race tends to be best with a certain weapon type, also. Avvoni like lasers, Humans like explosives and particle beams, Xerr prefer "inversion" weapons, etc

I was surprised when I applied the "brain bugs" part of sd.net to this universe, because I got REAL close to a lot of 'em without actually crossing the line. "Magic crystals" are in, but not as magic crystals. They're a "magic crystal" that's smelted down into non-crystals for hyperdrives. The "Ginkari" use organic ships, but the hulls are secreted rather than grown (so no "healing" bs), and are crap anyways. The Ginkari are also bug-aliens, but aren't exoskeletal (armored, yes, but an endoskeleton provides the support).

Tech-wise, Hyperdrive is a Wing Commander/Mote in God's Eye-style jump-line system, and BDZ doesn't exist (for political reasons rather than technical, though). Firepower is better than B5, but beyond that, I haven't really come up with anything resembling solid numbers. On the ground, Grav Tanks and both types of Exo-Squad-style powered armor (E-Frames and Jump Troopers) exist.

2- "Dragonball: Futura" and "Dragonball: Apocalypse": I didn't create this one, per se, but I was the writer, so I had a lot of influence. While based on the Dragonball anime, it's set more than 1000 years after DBZ, so the original characters are mentioned two or three times at most, and that's always as legend or myth.

The Saiyan race has come back (we hadn't worked out how, other than genetic engineering being involved somewhere along the line) and is now quite a bit more powerful: Super Saiyans number in the dozens, and there's three SSJ2s. However, their world, "Vegeta Nova", is engulfed in a civil war between people who want to go back into the planet-piracy business, and those that don't. To make things even more chaotic, a half-dozen Humans are there to get revenge for the "Time War", something that neither side has ever heard of.

As the story starts, we find out about Project Rianne, a more or less generic super-soldier program which was named after the leader of the Humans in a fit of spite. This program creates Kiwan (full-grown and with Vegeta's moves), Raijin (full-grown and with Goku's moves) and Chibi Rianne (physically 5 years old and with Gohan's moves). Fighting ensues, stuff blows up, these three join the good guys (rebels/anti-piracy guys). None of them are all that strong, as the combat focuses more on teamwork than "higher power level wins, period".

Generic superhero stuff, these three (and a couple others, Taijin and Blaire, who join them) help the good guys win, a bunch of bad guys blame the Humans for turning the tide of the war and decide to pull a Future Trunks and go back to change history and thus, you guessed it, launching the Time War. Good guys follow, and find themselves on Earth a few months before the Time War breaks out. This is where Apocalypse begins, and my influence increases as my two characters appear here: Stryker, a human with some weird abilities that multiply his PL by absurd amounts (at 35k, he beats a SSJ who's at a touch over 4 million), and Tobias Syber, who's your typical 98-pound weakling, but he's got a "Battlesuit" (E-Frame, basically) that lets him help in the fights.

3- "Operation Can't Wait Any Longer": A universe where character shields make Kirk, Picard, and Sisko combined look like a crippled redshirt, "Amine Girl" is a legitamite (and surprisingly common) medical condition, "Pez" is no longer a fruity candy (well, not a candy, at least  ), and handguns are known to occasionally blow up planets. "Where common sense cannot be found without a search warrent."

A better description can be found at http://www.cwal.net, and the forum where the weirdness happens at http://www.cwal.net/forums/rr/. I write under the pseudonym "Legacy" there.

Well, I've bored you enough for now, and will let you go.

Zaphod Beeblebrox was put in the Total Perspective Vortex, which used the principle of every piece of matter being related to and affected by every other piece of matter in the universe to extrapolate the whole of creation from a small piece of fairy cake.

My personal universe is sort of a cross between space opera SF and superhero. Some folks have, for reasons I won't get into here, extraordinary powers. One of them has been controlled as the power source for a inter-planetary civilization, size yet to be determined. The actual story is about what happens when he is broken out.

I've been kicking around an idea for a while of one of the fallen civilization universes. The tech on the main planet would have fallen to roughly 1860-1880 levels, with occasional scraps of higher technology being found. It would focus on the townspeople, who are looking to improve the standard of living, against the barbarian hordes who want to pillage the towns to get the plentiful food and weapons the cities have. Of course, there may be mysterious sponsors of the barbarians, drawing the low-tech towns of the world into view of the remnants of the Terran Empire, which is trying to reclaim all its colonies.

I drew ideas from the Fallout series, Wild Arms 3, the magazine article Sixguns and Sesheyans from Dragon magazine, a smidge from Heavy Gear (mostly the mechanics I'm using to model out battles), and possibly a few of the twists from Foundation.

My very own "universe"...

Post by Dooey Jo »

I've got one too!! Though I don't know what to call it. Name suggestions are welcome.

Anyhow, lets start with a little "time line" of what has happened over the last 5'000 years in my galaxy:

Year:
-250: After 50 years of research and development, the people on the planet called Syko finally creates a safe, easy and cheap way to get into outer space. They call it antigravity.

0: A "federation" between five planets only a few lightyears apart is formed. Among these planets are Syko, and Cursid, a planet that later will become cursed.

71: The hyperdrive is invented. This made it possible for the people in the "federation" to actually visit each other. It also made it possible to explore most of the galaxy. The hyperdrive was invented by accident by a guy named Yulrik from the planet Avee. He invented it when he was going to test a new kind of fusion engine.

1232: The formation of the First Galactic Republic.
1332: The Galactic Senate approves colonisation of uninhabited planets and moons. This was for some reason illegal before.

2021: The Galactic Republic falls due to massive invasions from the horribly ugly Unladens from the neighbor galaxy.

2032: My games "Attack of the UFOs" 1,2 and 3 takes place.

2154: The Unladens are defeated thanks to Shinja Barli from the planet Snuggo, leader of the rebellion. She is voted to the leader of the Second Galactic Republic. After this there is almost two thousand years of peace and plenty in the galaxy. This time is called the Galactic Peace.

2451: The Adventure in Space. An adventurer named Arne from Rne goes around in space and explores stuff. (four short stories written by me when I was 10-12 years old)

3978: The Squeak Empire is gaining power.
4222: The Squeak Empire falls and the emperor is killed, thanks to the brave commander Antioni Gjovani from Snuggo. He is promoted to Grand Admiral.

4342: The deadly "death bugs" (gigantic electric beatles [Not the pop group]) from the inhospitable planet Necrophoria conquers half the galaxy and some heavily populated planets. A lad named Fabian Albatross manages to kill the mother bug.

4560-4570: A bunch of "gangs" is terrorizing some areas in the galaxy. They eventually destroys each other. (this is where my game, UPO 2000 is taking place)

4850: The Secret Squeak Empire corrupts the Interstellar Police Force and tries to take over the Republic, but they are stopped by a guy named Dooey Jo, from Malvukia (he got rather mad when the squeaks kidnapped his wife, this is where my new game, that never will be complete takes place, BTW).

Yes, and now some fleet sizes.

The First Republic had some two thousand capital ships, but they didn't really have any weapons to speak of. They solved all conflicts peacefully.

Shinja Barli defeated the Unladens with a fleet consisting of three thousand capital ships, ranging from 3 km to 20 km large. All of them were heavily armed and the ships from Squeakia (143) had 300 Squeak Fighters each.

The Second Republic's fleet is the largest in the entire galaxy (they have decided to be ready if the Unladens should ever come back):
25000 Galactica Class Battle Cruisers (4 km long) + 140 fighters per ship
10000 Idjot Class Battle Cruisers (6 km long) + 350 fighters per ship
100000 Republic Class Star Cruisers (0.5 km long)
10421 Republic Class Space Stations (1 km across, stationary) + 100 fighters per station

The Squeak Empire had 3000 Squeak Cruisers and 300000 Squeak Fighters.

Weapons:

Most of the fighters use Laser Cannons, very similar to those i Star Wars.
The capital ships also have laser cannons, much stronger of course, but the capital ship's primary weapons are the ultra-high powered protonic energy cannon ("UPPY-cannon"). The firepower of these "UPPY-cannons" are around 100 GT. Recharge time: 10 seconds. They have 50-500 on each capital ship, depending on the size of the ship.
There are also a wide vareity of different missiles, torpedoes and bombs, ranging from KT-concussion missiles ("Delta Clusters") to Teraton Hypermatter/Antihypermatter bombs (Ultra V-bomb).

Defenses:

They have planetery shields, which are almost impossible to take out.
The shields on the ships are somewhat weaker, (some fighters don't have shields at all, the Squeak Fighter, for instance, don't) but they are not frequency based. The capital ship's shields can take several hits from an UPPY-cannon, and the Galactica Battle Cruisers can survive an Ultra V-bomb.
The ship's hulls are adamantium based and therefor very hard. A collision with a massive object (asteroid, planet) is not enough to destroy the ship, even if the shields are down (and the speed isn't very great) but an unshielded vessel will not survive a direct hit from an UPPY-cannon.

Special tech:

An ultra hyperdrive was invented once. It was able to travel at near infinite speeds. It got destroyed though and the blueprints are lost. (The Adventure in Space 3)

There are at least one ship capable of blowing an entire planet up. The ship isn't very large, 2 km long, but it fires a very big energy beam which can blast a planet into oblivion. (The Adventure in Space). And a modified version of this weapon can destroy a black hole (The Adventure in Space 3).

An alien species are known to have galaxy destroying bombs. How these bombs works are unknown. Arne made the bomb turn around and destroy the aliens own galaxy, 5 million lightyears away (The Adventure in Space 2).

They once had teleporters, similar to Star Trek, but they were very unreliable. They are now forbidden because of their dangers and of ethical reasons. (UPO 2000)

Very unusual mushrooms grow on asteroids. They explode if they get wet. One of these mushrooms were placed on the planet Rainforest. The entire planet blew up a few moment later. The only known way to destroy these mushrooms is to cry at them. Tears make them die and become ghosts. (The Adventure in Space 2)

Some handguns are powerful enough to blow up a bank office (The Aventure in Space 2).

That was what I could think of right now. It feels like I've forgotten something. If I find out what it might be, I'll add it later. Any questions?

I have a few, but they're pretty pathetic.

One is a near-future "universe", without maglevs and government controls everything, but there's no unrealistic tech (maybe some uber-biotech, but it's very hush-hush) and no interstellar space travel.

The other is a fully developed Solar System, but without FTL.

I developed those for play in GURPS Space.

I've developped three Sci-Fi universes in my story-writing career.

The first is in a vastly expansive and powerful alien empire, roughly fifty years from now, and it is about their struggle to understand that another alien race, called 'humans' inhabit the universe, when for millennia they could not find any other sentient life anywhere. The books centre around their problems with us as a race, and dealing with our particular paranoias and cultural absurdities.

The second is what I affectionately call 'pirates in space', and follows the adventures of a swashbuckler with a starship in future 5 million years in the future of the first series above. I've written a couple books in that series, where humans are basically a slave race, kept around as expendable soldiers to a gigantic, alien empire that are constantly in the throes of civil war, and which use various engineered and discovered slave races as their soldiers, including humans.

The third is a techno-crime series, the fifth of which is the novel I was working on for the Fanfiction group here on SD.net, titled 'The Givers'...until writers block hit me. I'll get back to it someday soon.
I really love the universe its set in, where artistic aesthetics rule scientific progress.

I also wrote half a book which I wanted to post on SD.net for a LONG time, and which I'll give to anyone who wants to finish it. It's about a bunch of humans 50 million years in the future are struggling to survive the dying of the sun. They discover a time travel device among many other long-lost technological relics of an older age and send back a team of men to discover an ancient relic said to possess omnipotent powers, called 'god'. In the future they have NO clue what it was; religion has been gone for millions of years. Unfortunately, when they arrive they accidentally drown and kill a young native boy named Joshua Ben-Joseph, and one of the team members becomes remorseful and delusional, and runs off to take the dead boy's place, taking advanced and discreetly implanted technology with him. The bulk of the story is others of his team trying to stop him after he becomes - you guessed it - the historical Jesus.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

My Universe of Pure Indulgence

Post by Biddybot »

Some years ago I was part of an apa and did a comic called 'My Summer In Gallinack' which was basically an excuse to draw and write about all my little pet interests. It was set on a primitive Earth-like world called Gallinack and starred a thinly disguised me (the dumb one) visiting a not-at-all disguised real-life gal friend (the smart one), who was working on said alien planet. The natives were bipeds based on different breeds of chickens--I had characters like Dan Malay and Francis Araucana. The story turned into a road show when I wanted to see a lek held by the 'wild gallos' and Dan and friends agreed to lead an expedition for me and smart friend Bonnie into the jungle to see the lek. We rode gaited horses bareback and had along professional escourt/wrestler Brutus Beefcake for reasons that are too stupid to get into here. Bonnie loathed Brutus and I drooled constantly over him, which made for lots of snippy dialog between us.

En route, we also eventually picked up two other wrestlers, Mr. Perfect and the Red Rooster, both of whom joined the expedition. We were captured by a tribe of melanistic mutant ringneck pheasants--wild gallos--at one point, but won them over and were let go. Later, I fell into a sinkhole along with Mr. Perfect when a bolt of lightning caused our horse to rear. The two of us went exploring and found a statue of the Egyptian god Anubis, which came to life when I touched its hand. He too wound up joining our group and could transform himself into a very Egyptian-looking horse as well as the usual jackal, which somewhat relieved the load on the other poor horses. (I got to ride Anubis, heh heh...) After that, it got into crop circles and UFOs and the soul of Elvis Presley and there was a fight between Anubis and Set, again for reasons that are too ridiculous for words...

I've done other stuff, but my world of giant talking chickens, WWF wrestlers and Ancient Egyptian gods, all set on a primitive jungle world, still reigns supreme as the weirdest 'universe' I've ever created.

I havent a sci-fi universe of my own, but I do have a fantasy one....

The history I have written down is fairly complete, the main players in the history were two ancient races, the Surani and the Estori they were superficially similar but in many ways very different.
The world where my stories are set is the original home of the Surani, they used magic and lived in harmony with nature and were the only 'advanced' species in the world.
The Estori are a sort of dark parody of the Surani, rather than living in harmony with nature and magic they drained the magic from worlds and used the power to open Gateways and move on to another world, jumping from world to world draining each in turn to add to thier own power and resources....collecting species from the worlds to serve them....these include 'demonic' creatures and also humans.
The Estori eventually came to the world where the Surani lived. At first the Surani welcomed them until they realised their true aims. A war of magic and blades ensued...the Surani were hard pressed against the Estori who had spent most of thier time honing thier abilities in combat, until they were able to convince some of the humans to desert thier dark masters. Using magic the Surani attempted to make humans more powerful in combat...something that turned out very badly, but thats covered in detail in one of my little stories.....
Anyway, together the Surani and human warriors were able to hold of the Estori long enough for the greatest of Surani mages to cast a great spell to banish the Estori and bind them to one of the desolate worlds they left in thier wake. The spell however was not without cost, it destroyed most of the great verdant plains at the centre of the main continent in the world, turning it into a desolate desert wasteland and it claimed the lives of the mages that cast it.
The Estori were bound along with most of thier minions, though some remained....
Over time the power of the Surani began to fade, they were unable to ever recover fully from the Great War. Eventually humans came to dominate the world and the Surani passed into legend.....
This is the period where most of my tales take place.

Well, I've been writing my own little story for fun.
I call it Running Fire ( ok, kinda dumb)
It's about this group of alien infiltrators that kill a deity of a very powerful race, and massive war ensures. Lots of big battle and stuff.
It's sorta stupid though.

I've got an universe that I'm currently designing. One day I'll turn it into a game (just have to finish studying 3D game engine programming and then sit down and learn Maya or Creator).

Basically its set a couple thousand years in the future, with mankind having colonized several hundred to a couple thousand systems. Most habitats are space stations or domes, with several dozen planets that can support human life. No intelligent aliens, although there is alien life. The intelligent life consist of humans, genetically 'improved' humans and some self-aware AIs.

Power technology is based on radiation absortion(sp?), fusion (using carbon fuel blocks or slush H or He) and mater/antimatter (using solid fuel rods of heavy elements or elements with hypermatter nuclei (contains strangelets)).

Engine tech is based on ion drives for moving short distances, displacement drives for interplanetary distances (a la I-War) and hyperspace (B5 type) for interstellar.

NPBs are medium to heavy energy weapons (and used exclusively space ships) and lasers are light to medium energy weapons (usable in both space and atmosphere). I also have railguns, chemically propelled bullets, missiles and torpedoes; all with a variety of warheads.

Artifical gravity is in, although it eats power. Hover cars are in, but they use an atmospheric version of the ion engine. Quantum tunneling and other like physics (assumed to be discovered) are used for communication.

Lots of different types of ships and ground vehicles, including the whole range of military types.

Thats it for now.
Artillery. Its what's for dinner.

I've started developing a sci-fi universe, but it's REEEALY sketchy right now. All I've done so far is laid out some character profiles and started some weapons and vehicles specs.
