40K seems to generally have fairly good continuity, aside from variations of individual writer preference (which seem to influence largerly atmosphere and perception of the social, economic and govermental conditions largely. IE how "dark and gloomy" it is.) Its way better than SW continuity.Bob the Gunslinger wrote:I think the common problem we are seeing is a lack of continuity editing. There should be at least a couple of editors at BL who can keep the technical details if not completely in line, then at least in the same ballpark. Oh, and those same editors should really be forced to do their jobs, because much of what sucks in DSBS and other BL novels could easily be caught and changed (or sent back for revision) by a competent editor.
The main problem as I see it tends to be that authors tend to have their favorite "eras" of material to draw on. Some draw on the earlier stuff more, some on the later stuff, some on all of the above. And a few will go realyl far out.
The most egregious examples I can think of, aside from the one IO mentioned was the Imperium battle barges not having artificial gravity and needing to use fusion nukes in the Blood angels novels (those were very "different" for many reasons.. bolters didnt seem to have their explosive effects for exampl.) There's also Dark Adeptus where Titans were stated to be lost tech (IE the AdMech isnt building them anymore and I think had a four legged titan.) And IIRC the Tech Guard were undead soldiers.
Then there's Ben Counter's treating plasma weapons like a super soaker shooting burning liquids.
But all in all, its better continuity than I've seen from alot of series (or maybe the universe is just more forgiving of it.)
