SGA Season 5 Premiere Date Announced

Post by JME2 »

From Gateworld
The fifth season of Stargate Atlantis will premiere on Friday, July 11, according to SCI FI's online schedule. This confirms the premiere date we reported earlier this month -- though, of course, it is subject to change by the network.

Atlantis will hold on to its 10 p.m. time slot (9 p.m. Central), with the new episode re-airing again at 12 midnight each Friday.

Season Five will premiere with "Search and Rescue," which picks up on the fourth season cliffhanger that aired in March. On the hunt for the Wraith Michael (Connor Trinneer), who has kidnapped Teyla and plans to use her soon to be born child for his own evil ends, Lt. Colonel Sheppard and his team were trapped in one of Michael's labs as the booby-trapped building collapsed in on top of them.

The fifth season will see the exit of Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), who is replaced as base commander by Richard Woolsey (new cast member Robert Picardo). Expect also to see a bit more of Dr. Jennifer Keller, as actress Jewel Staite has been promoted from recurring to regular cast status.

New characters will be introduced as well, including Captain Alicia Vega (Leela Savasta) -- who appears in "Search and Rescue."

Classic episodes of Stargate Atlantis will continue this spring and summer at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. SCI FI's schedule also hints at Atlantis marathons for July 8 (the same day that Season Four is released on DVD - story) and July 11.

Atlantis' fifth season will probably have it a bit rough considering Battlestar Galactica will be off the air during pretty much its whole run.

Ahh, I like these changes. I'm a bit confused about this Leela Savasta actress--I did a google to find out who she was, hit Images to see if I recognized any shows, and all I got were pictures of her having sex with some dude in some fake fog. Maybe she's replacing Teyla as a "tough female with sex appeal" sort?

So it sounds like Teyla is out and replaced by Slutty McTanned and Carter is out and replaced by The Good Doctor, which I approve of as he delivers solid performances and was the only character on Voyager who really deserves a leading role. He's an interesting character and an enjoyable actor, and it also allows for some interesting dynamics. I assume the IOA is now in-charge of Atlantis? He usually played his part pretty balls-devoid, so maybe now they'll write him a few rough weeks so he can have some character development and turn into a strict-but-capable commander sort.

Anyway, I'm pleased with these changes. Stuff needed to be changed. Once Ford disappeared and Rodney became a full-time offworld combatant we lost the secondary muscle character. We got Ronin then, and that was kinda an odd choice. I like Ronin and don't want him out, but he altered the dynamics to enough of a degree that Teyla become somewhat irrelevent other than a female face in the group. They no longer needed their Neelixy "guide to our corner of the Universe" type of survivalist sort. It's sad, but it's better to change the character lineup than continually fail to deliver a good motivation for the characters.
