The Black Company at the Battle of Helm's Deep

Post by HemlockGrey »

Force sub time!

The Black Company, one thousand strong, is ripped from the Battle of Charm and transported to the Battle of Helm's Deep. They must hold out until Whisper arrives from the east with reinforcements.

In Scenario A, they are alone. In Scenario B, they have a thousand archers(a la the elves) to back them up.

Can they defend the fortress from the orcish onslaught, or will they be overrun?

Um, no. This is the Black Company from the Glen Cook books of the same name.

They'll make a powerful if not decisive addition. The movie greatly underestimated the numbers on both sides of the battle.

I think, that against 10,000 orcs, in a defensible position, the Company will do extremely well. These are hard, disciplined infantry. The Deeping Wall can be manned by five hundred men while another five hundred brace the gates. Losses will be terrible but I think they can hold out until reinforcements arrive, and, if nothing else, they can make a final cavalry charge to try and break the orcish horde.

The Black Company are more than competent mercenaries: their masters of dirty tricks. They also have three competent wizards to help them out.

With the Black Company entrenched in a decent fortress, the orcs are not going to get in. Goblin, One-Eye, and Silent will be more than capable of taking care of the orcs' more exotic weapons plus throwing some unpleasantness back to the enemy. Without the bombs and ballistas to worry about, keeping the orcs out will be just run-of-the-mill merc work.

Plus, the Lieutenant is a master of siege work. If the Company is given some time to prepare, even just a day, I'm certain they'll do some adding to the defensives- even if it's just some trenches that will force the orcs to spend more time crossing the plain that lies beneath the Deeping Wall.
