SGA Episode 506: The Shrine

Post by CaptJodan »

McKay becomes not-so-smart.

Filler episode, but not a bad filler episode. I wasn't expecting it to be that great, but it turned out not that bad.

I like how they continue to play Woosley thus far, as not a yes man and Shepherd's bitch the way Weir was. He has his own ideas, own opinions, and even though the team still seems to win out most of the time, he's at least still consistent with his character.

I also thought David Hewlett did a pretty good job playing himself as someone mentally handicapped. He was fairly convincing, and it was enjoyable to watch him play a different variant from himself for a change. A good character episode for him.

Things I didn't like:

I was somewhat surprised that the doc was so adamant against at least trying this other option. Given the history of the ancients to spread deux ex machina's all around the Pegasus galaxy, I figured the story alone would likely convince someone in the room that it might be something like what it turned out to be. It was a minor point, though, since Keller was clearly dealing with the situation on an emotional level.

Also it was a bit convenient that the parasite decided to walk itself out all on its own. I could more believe that it would migrate to the part of the body farthest away from the radiation, causing Keller to maybe have to think on her feet, position Rodney such that the hole was farthest from the radiation, perhaps risking his life further. Instead, beyond the initial drilling, we have Keller as a passive force, just waiting for it to come out. But again, this was minor, as it was obviously intended as a character piece, not really focusing on the "alien "virus" of the week".

I'd put this one just below episode 504.
It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

I really liked it, especially the final moment at the end with Keller and the video.

Too bad the show's cancelled, and we'll never see where that will go. :(

They aren't going to finish the season?

I'm pretty sure the Rodney/Keller angle gets explored again this season.

I have to say this is possibly one of my favourite Atlantis episodes, and if this is the kind of show they are going to be making (i.e character based) for universe then I remain cautiously optimistic about it.

Better than expected. I don't know if I bought Hewlett's acting.

Have you ever met someone who is mentally handicapped?

His performance was pretty much spot on.

Yeah, they clearly did their research here.

He reminded me a fair bit of my cousin. Especially when he was running down the halls in Atlantis screaming for Sheppard, it almost made me cry.

Yeah, Hewlett's acting was very convincing. It's a pity that it's being canceled.
