Dune 7: Opinions please (spoilers)

Post by Kurgan »

I'm about halfway through my reading of "Chapterhouse: Dune," the sixth and final book in the Dune series by the late, great Frank Herbert.

Now I've heard all the negative reviews of the other "Dune" spinoff novels by son Brian and the infamous KJA, and so I skipped those completely (and frankly they don't really sound that interesting). However I'm intrigued by the two part "finale" that they've done which is purported to be based on Frank's original outline (though that doesn't guarantee it will be of quality).

So I think it's probably inevitable that I read these two books which are claiming to be the "cap" on the series (though I see now the duo are writing books to fit in between the FH books, but again I don't really care), especially since they are at least based on something that FH created, even if they've filled in the gaps themselves and taken liberties with it I'm sure.

If we could indicate spoilers, that'd be nice, since I obviously haven't read them yet, but I'd like to hear opinions for those who have read Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune (and comparing them to the rest of the REAL series). What did you like, what didn't you like, and why?

Thanks in advance!
fun/fantasy movies existed before the overrated Star Wars came out. What made it seem 'less dark' was the sheer goofy aspect of it: two robots modeled on Laurel & Hardy, and a smartass outlaw with bigfoot co-pilot and their hotrod pizza-shaped ship, and they were sucked aboard a giant Disco Ball. -adw1
Someone asked me yesterday if Dracula met Saruman and there was a fight, who would win. I just looked at this man. What an idiotic thing to say. I mean really, it was half-witted. - Christopher Lee

The inclusion of a great many concepts and characters first introduced in the god-awful (unlike most, I actually forced myself to finish them, so I actually know just how bad they are) Butlerian Jihad prequels that KJA co-wrote in both Hunters and, very particularly, Sandworms was a giant turn off for me. Nonetheless, I think that the worst thing was the disregard for the previous backstory (SPOILER: like Paul not being the real Kwisatz Haderach). Note that I didn't particularly love the last few Herbert sequels, but I consider that in comparison with the crap written by KJA and Brian Herbert they are solid gold.

In a nutshell, Dune 7 & 8 are really, really poor literature. I will stop now, before I enter ranting mode and do excessive spoiling.

My feeling has always been finish the series. if the series derails, than fine, better to enjoy what you can from it than to put your hands on your ears and sing loud. Frank Herbert's books were much better than the most recent ones, but I was able to get a better sense of transition from Chapterhouse Dune.

personally I actually enjoyed butlerien jihad, machine crusade and battle of Corrin, but the latest "masterpieces" were not my cup of team neither was the other prequel trilogy. I am comfortable saying taht because I actually read them and didn't cherry pick the series.
