From the Sci-Fi book The Mote in God's Eye. The Moties are an alien race that has an amazing reproduction rate, and have continued to evolve even as they became "civilized", to the point of doctor species, soldier species, engineer species, etc.
Humanity's solution was a blockade of the system to prevent them from leaving, but...knowing what you know about the Moties, in both books(but say you're on the commission at the end of the first one), would you destroy them?
Would you kill the Moties?

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Despite being locked in their own system, there's allways the chance that a ship of em WILL eventually break the blockade. Let em out into the galaxy at large, and eventually they'll overrun everyone else. And humanity first, since we're closest to em.
They simply are too dangerous to be left to their own devices.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

No. The actions taken by the Empire were correct to my mind. If they had attempted to kill off the moties they could certainly have obliterated their homeworld, however the asteroid dwellers would be much more difficult to find, and considering that 1. the moties knew that a new alderson point would be forming in the next few decades and 2. they'd demonstrated uncanny ability in developing new/reverse engineering technology (didn't that engineer the Mac pick up get a basic idea about what the principals behind langston fields were just by seeing one?) I don't think that prolonged exposure to imperial tech would've made the situation any better.
