Bridge Number Three

I've never seen that starship Yamato or whatever it's called, but I've seen the pictures on the net and some versus parodies.

What is it with the Bridge Number Three being destroyed? Seems like a recurring joke, where does it come from?

IIRC, every time the ship took damage it was reported as bridge number three being destroyed, much like Star Treks exploding bridge consuls no matter where or what the hit is.
