Blimey! And here I thought he was going to be the next Prime Minister!
And he would likely be a shit film maker as well. :P

Of course I really mean Jim Cameron, a talented man who has begun to lose the plot in the last decade, more so than Steven Spielberg. In Aliens we had heavily armed marines losing against primitive aliens, but that was the result of conspiracy and incompetence at the highest level, with a small team intentionally being pushed into the deep end, and the aliens themselves being dangerous enough to be used as bio-weapons.

As soon as I saw the pixie aliens deftly dodging the combined fire of soldiers/marines from gunships my brain curled up with embarassment.

That's an odd statement, considering James Cameron hasn't even made a fictional feature film in the last twelve years.

Agreed. I was getting a bit of a "Surrogates" vibe from the trailer, too...
I'm still pissed off at Cameron for ganking the real Avatar movie's title, though.

It;s kind of silly to be mad at him for it, since he first developed his movie back in 1994 and has had the rights to "Avatar" as a title for just as long.

The Last Airbender works as a better title for that other movie anyway.

Meh.

Gross looking lizard furries zipping about in a jungle. Hordes of dinosaurs. Use of 3D to accomplish... what, exactly? People that look like people and forehead aliens? Seriously? We've used the most powerful 3D rendering technology to create actors that look like actual actors (but are now more expensive!) and aliens that look like the same actors with a bit of blue makeup, a hare lip, and some spock ears? Oh, and a tail.

I'm sorry, this entire project seems absurd. If I want to see a touching story of aliens and evil humans I can watch that in a more nuanced format by sitting down with The Iron Giant.

Well wiki has a plot synopsis, and according to it it comes out in December. Looks interesting enough for a popcorn flick so I am most probably going to see it. As to how these aliens are supposed to fight us, well according to the wiki article Spoiler
1. Our hero betrays the nasty humans

2. they do have a few advantages, namely we aren't supposed to be able to breath their atmosphere plus they are physically stronger than us, thought I am not sure how much stronger
Although even with this help, I would have still thought the aliens would be over matched. But I guess I will just have to watch it and find out though.

I don’t know about this. At first sounds good, but reading about and watching the trailer, as said by others, it looks like Dances with Wolves in Space. I think the story for Battle for Terra seems better (I haven’t seen it yet so). It just that, that seems more of a complicated take, the last humans need a home and an peaceful alien race stands in the way, a more morally twisted story, on right and wrong, rather than Avatar’s humans bad, while natives good. The whole idea of a technology advanced humans battling hard, what looks like’ primitive’ alien race. I think it trying to compare Native Americans fighting settlers etc, but isn’t unless the settlers had mechs, planes, machine guns and spaceships. I don’t care if they have dinosaurs, they aren’t bulletproof. It seems just to kind of a preachy film. I don’t mind that it just seems to be a bit to blatant about it. Pushing an environmental message and an anti-war one, it a way that’s been done more than once, and except for some of the sci-fi stuff (which much has been ripped off books, other films, TV shows) unimaginative. I think too much money has been spent for it not to be success, but from what I’ve read and seen so far, it looks like a missed opportunity.

Avatar should've been more like Watership Down than Ferngully and Return of the Jedi.

On the other hand, if the supposedly upcoming World of Warcraft movie uses these Aliens for their Night Elves, it might be slightly more watchable than the blue-makeup-actors-that-make-me-wish-for-mystique that I foresee.

They're making a WOW movie?

*Facepalms*

Will the characters go around killing boars to level up for the first half-hour?

On-topic,
If this doesn't get too preachy, it could be a good action flick.

However my money's on the *Preachy* factor getting dialed up to eleven.

Return of the Jedi isn't animated; Watership Down doesn't have ecological messages that I remember. I'm not seeing the common thread betweent the movies he mentioned.

He might as well say 'Should have been more Sin City than Sea Biscuit and Fifth Element'.

Hmm. Well, ROTJ had ewoks, so maybe it's "Involves Animals and/or Uncivlised Natives"?

That's kind of unintentionally racist, if so.

or perhaps he meant that he dislikes environmental preaching and advanced military technology getting beaten by rocks and sticks.

Or, we could just simply wait for him to answer the fucking question rather than idly speculating about the mentality of a nameless poster on the internet.

Presumably he means the movie should have had the aliens finding a new home where they can live in peace ala Watership Down's rabbits rather than beating technologically superior humans with a happy ending ala the other movies. That's just a guess of course.

My thoughts: evil humans land and make one take over the body of a beautiful native that later goes and turns on his human commanders for the sake of love! Beautiful aline love that those nasty humans will never understand!
And thus the humans must got, with all their evil, despitable and horrible... technology and we can still live in relative paradise in our new age land! We shall live in paradise in our noble savage land!
PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT YOU STINKY HUMANS! WE ARE SUPERIOR AND BEAUTIFUL!
The stories about poverty, famine, plaques, high birth defects, low life expentancy, ignorance are all lies!

[/end of my impressions]

Until I am convinced that this is not the case, I wouldn't even bother pirating this thing, as it would be a waste of my time just to watch it.
Credo!

That's where I'm coming from and Watership Down very much had an ecological message, but unlike Ferngully it was fairly subtle, but at the same time did not pull any punches about ecological destruction, nor did it shy away from the cruelties of nature and the rabbit's own social struggles. Ferngully cheapened (or glossed over) man's danger and destructiveness by having a smokey blob monster voiced by Tim Curry as the main antagonist.
