So wouldn't it be desirable to start an unofficial one then?

Here, I'll go first:

- If it's in the movie, it's first tier canon
- If it's in the official encyclopedia, it's second tier canon

If there are contradictions, the movie wins.

Easy as pie.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

And if you assumed that about Star Trek you'd be wrong.

However, the existance of the real Pandorapedia (not the online one, the unpublished one) indicates that Cameron has a distinct interest in maintaining continuity in all spinoff products (and has declared his interest in these, as well) unlike Star Trek producers would of course complicate this. Where does the website come in the heirarchy of things? It's promotional material, not a solid reference guide - obviously the Activist's guide should trump it. What about the toys? There's a toy of Tsu'tey with a bizzare looking double bow thingy; is it canon that he had one at some point?

All the discussion on dive bombing, etc, is actually kinda worthless:

If you have a fucking VTOL bomber, you might as well just hover over the target and drop bombs directly. It's a pretty simple operation: Are you over the target? Then drop the bomb, if not, move so that you can be directly over the top, and drop.

Fine if you have total air superiority or don't mind taking losses, but when hundreds of hostile wyvern riders are suicidally determined to stop your sole makeshift bomber, you don't want that kind of vulnerability if you can avoid it.
