Sorry for Chiming late, but is a space marine guns like bolter and heavy bolter also like the Bradley Bushmaster gun, since they are so large and powerful are able to wield it like a assault rifle, as Modern real RPG's tend to be pure rockets,the bolter seems like the intermediate guns that are mostly reserved for today's IFV, the gap between Heavy Tank guns and large machine guns.

IIRC bolters are .75 and the heavies are 1 inch which puts them in the 20-25mm category. So yeah, I'd say they bridge the gap between what we think of today as small arms and light cannon.
