First Ultramarines teaser
Here's the first teaser for the Ultramarines animated movie:

Pretty lame, to be honest.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
I hope the animation will be better than what was depicted. It looked like it was lifted off a seven year old game.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Re: First Ultramarines teaser
Talk about a let down. I wasn't expecting anything amazing but a slow close in on a guy's face with a lifeless voiceover by John Hurt? The DOW games have better voice acting than this teaser. I get the sense they were more interested in getting the big names up there on the screen than showing us anything from the movie. You want a good WH40K teaser? See the "Space Marines" game teaser. Trailers are supposed to at least whet said appetite. That did nothing unless you get your rocks off the Ultramarines and craggled men in armor.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
Well, it wasn't a trailer, it was a teaser. It looked fine to me, but then that isn't saying much because, well, it was a teaser.
Though I did think the facial animation was pretty slick (watch the dude's eyes).

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
While the voice-over was passable but not stellar, the animation perfectly captured the Marine's feeling of a sad weariness.
Whether that was what they were going for is another matter.

Really need to see more if we want to pass judgement, I'd say. Didn't wow, but trailers rarely have the characteristics of the finished product.

I thought the narrative was a little at odds with the look of that Space Marine.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
I wonder if mentioning just 'alien races' there as opposed to 'aliens and heretics/chaos' signifies anything--perhaps it'll be about a conflict with the Tyranids?

And ,once again, Games Workshop goes overboard with their Ultramarine love. Bleh.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
I have to say, that looked like crap compared to the Space Marine game trailer.
I really hope that the finished product is of much higher quality. The game trailer animation looked vastly superior to that teaser, which was about the same quality as the trailer's ingame stuff. Also surprising was that John Hurt sounded rubbish, he normally sounds more impressive if he just speaks. The other trailer has a better voiceover from some no name guy.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
Agree with the game trailer having a better feel and their camera was more dramatic to me, more sense of awe. Even if you compare the close up segments of the game trailer their 5 secs to show a marine looked better and voice matched the mood.

Bloody Ultrasmurfs, can't GW give a little publicity to the Blood Angels? Or how about the Space Wolves? Or even the Banana Marines?

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
Just saying how overexposed the Ultramarines are compared to most of the other chapters. The movie looks... Interesting. The script should be good, but the rest will be all CGI so they avoided a few problems with trying live action, but it's too early to tell how it will turn our.

The Ultramarines are the generic Space Marine chapter. If you're making a product designed to sell the universe to people who don't already know about it, then you've got enough work to do already explaining who and what he Space Marines are, without explaining the special character of one of the weirdo chapters as well.

Agreed. This is their first real attempt at a movie, so they're going to be conservative. If this works out, expect more movies, and more varied subject matter (as with the Audiobooks).

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
closest thing to a "generic" space marine chapter besides the Ultramarines and their successor chapters(which would seem to right out due their connection to the Ultramarines) are the Blood Ravens (due to being the "default" in DoW) and the Imperial Fists, both of which have their own traditions and quirks that would have to be explained in addition to the concept of a space marine and the CodexNight_stalker wrote:Just saying how overexposed the Ultramarines are compared to most of the other chapters.
Ultra Marines work as introduction chapter as their traditions are the Codex Astrades meaning you won't have to explain those traditions and why they differ from the codex, with the Ultramarines all you have to do is explain the concept of the Codex, once people are familiar enough with that you can bring the variant chapters like the Dark Angels (though they're one of the more radically different from the base line chapters) or those chapters that don't follow the codex (aka Space Wolves or the Black Templars).

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
Bland voice overs aside I don't actually dig the portrayal of this character. I get he's an older more veteran marine but it looks like they were trying to go with a Clint Eastwood rugged old person, but instead got the spread too thin, rolling on it's last wheel kind of old. He looks less like somehow who has survived countless battles against alien horrors and triumphed, and more like someone in line for a hip replacement. Not very impressive.
I can't say much for the actual product. On one hand it's being produced by the studio responsible for all the direct to video Bionicle movies. But on the other side the script is written by 40k veteran author Dan Abnett. (I hope I got that correct) So while I can't vouch for the quality of the acting or CGI, it should have at least a competent plot.

Part of me wonders if they thought "Ultramarines" would make for a good movie title.

I really hope it's good. Even though GW said otherwise, I'd like them to consider a big budget live action movie if this is successful.

Re: First Ultramarines teaser
The plot sure, but Dan Abnett has, as far as I'm aware, no experience writing screenplays of any sort so who knows how it'll turn out. He's done audio plays before though, so he has a bit of practice in writing scripts of some kind at least.OsirisLord wrote:So while I can't vouch for the quality of the acting or CGI, it should have at least a competent plot.
