SGU Season Two reveals Destiny’s mission

SPOILER ALERT: MODERATE

SGU Destiny 1The upcoming second season of Stargate Universe will expand upon the show’s mythology, giving viewers new insights on just why the Ancients set the Destiny on a pre-programmed course millions of years ago.

Among those insights is the fact that the ship isn’t just allowing its reluctant crew from Earth to explore the unknown, but that it is also going somewhere in particular.

SCI FI PI reports that “the Destiny has a destination of cosmic importance,” according to an upcoming interview with executive producer Brad Wright — “so important that it overshadows the desire for the crew to get home, and that by fulfilling this new mission, it may in fact allow them to get home.”

Editors from the Australian broadcaster’s official Web site recently visited the set of the show in Vancouver, B.C., and also got a peek at a casting sheet for “Resurgence,” with hints of what fans are in store for when the mid-season finale arrives at the end of 2010.

According to the site, the info indicated “a gigantic battle in space featuring an armada of alien spaceships, and possibly a planet-based battle, are coming to Stargate Universe. Great news for Stargate action junkies!”

According to the site, the tenth episode of the season might include such thing as “a holographic image of a battlefield,” and “a sea of wrecked ships.”

For more check out the original report now at SCI FI PI! The new season of Stargate Universe premieres in October on Syfy Channel.

(Thanks to Oscar and Morjana for the tip!)

Anyone care to speculate on where Destiny is going? The center of the universe? The End of the universe? Homeworld of the ancients? Fiji?

That's not exactly unique to SG:U... That's why we usually don't see "nothing at all happens" episodes. They are boring.

Finally, a fucking reason for why everyone wants the ship. Coulda still hinted at it at the end of last season but...meh. Maybe they're trying to pull a JMS. Put a filler story in the front, do the big stuff in the middle.

I'll play NecronLord. "They're going to find the Thessara Infinatus!" :)

Seriously, who knows. Perhaps some race more ancient than they were that had "all the answers" or something. Perhaps those planet builders.

Something else just occurred to me. Does this mean Rush knew what the ship's mission was and lied in "Air" or did he not know? Could the data banks have been falsified by the Ancients to prevent any intruders from deterring the ship's mission?

Don't be silly. That was built by the Ancients. It can therefore be presumed to be within their domain.

So is this a promise to see some action and exploding starship porn next season?

I don't think we can expect much in the way of EXPLODING starship porn. The audience really only cares about the Destiny, and you can't really blow it up without reset-button-palooza. if you can't blow up Destiny that just leaves blowing up enemies, and if they do that too often they will run into the Daedalous problem where the audience knows the ubership will prevail against anything so there's no tension.

Take the Star Trek example. A floating graveyard of ships , provides the threat a la Wolff 369. The graveyard scene was actually MORE menacing than most of the borg battles up to and including the battle in First contact. hell in the battle in first Contact we knew damn well the Enterprise wasn't going down, as it had been introduced five minutes ago, but they couldn't even total the defiant. That battle had to end quickly because of the inevitable stalemate between superior firepower and character shields, requiring a DEM and as a result, lacked dramatic tension.

This was echoed in the Stargate Franchise's own "be all my sins remembered" actually, where the Daedalous and the Apollo stomp around among the previously unstoppable ancient ships off doom. The battle was just window dressing for the implementation of the DEM.

on the other hand with a floating graveyard fans will be taking screen shots for wikipedia entries for the next eight years.

If only.

I watch it out of habbit more than anything. Also, there's still PLENTY of room for exploding starship porn. They can pull a BSG and give them something else to go along with the Destiny, or have shuttles get asploded, or show 304's getting blown up back in the milky way.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Do you really care? SG has always had some of the most boring and unengaging space battles in televised sci-fi history.

Alright well apparently there is a sub audience represented by grif, that is characterized by an indifference to whether the Destiny is... asploded... I suppose the show isn't actually contingent on continued operation of the ship, personally I'd be pissed if they actually blew up the ship before at least exploring it, figuring out how to operate it etc, It'd be a giant cocktease the same as the Orion from Stargate Atlantis or Heruar's Mother ship, both of which got iced on the first mission. Destiny would be worse because they've put quite a bit off time and energy into developing the mystery of the ship.

Yeah actually I wouldn't mind the Destiny getting destroyed in exchange for Destiny II. The problem with the Destiny is that it's a fucking piece of rust bucket. It cant even sustain it's weapons fire for an extended period. In the case of VOY or BSG at least the ship they were on was a fully functional ship. Destiny is just waiting to go to the junkyard, I remain skeptical of what kind of fights it can get in and survive.

Of course, there's always a chance that writers will shit on continuity and without explanation we will see Destiny engaging a dozen alien ships with full shields and uber weapons despite its tiny power reserves that will strangely not deplete during the fight. I don't know whether to be happy or sad if that happens.

Agreed, although they have been a few exceptions. The battle over the Asurans homeworld was pretty decent. But I don't see any ongoing scifi to watch that is space based. Do you? Beggars cant be choosers I guess.

I wasn't necessarily proposing blowing the destiny up, I was saying two separate things:

- I don't care about the destiny or its crew.
- They could give us a new ship which they would then blow up at a later date (like the Pegasus on nBSG).

I agree that they won't and shouldn't blow up the destiny, and also that it's in bad taste to give them a new ship only to have it blow up immediately as mentioned. I'm thinking they'll run into a seeder ship at some stage, which they might even be able to take along for the ride if it's idle.

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a stargate seeding vessel. They're probably pretty damn cool.

I would imagine it has to be some sort of automated mining ship. Possibly using something similar to Asgard beaming technology to bring in raw materials for building new gates.

Woah woah woah that kind of poppycock thinking is what contributed to Voyager lurching into is 7th season. You go buy DVDs and you watch what WAS good, thus telegraphing to franchise owners what you would watch again.

Firefly is on Netflix if you're a cheap skate and the old Stargate SG-1 box sets are dirt cheap.

Only applicable if he's part of a Nielson household. Do you know how TV ratings work in the US?

Well so much for libertarian themed satire...
I doubt Nielson is the exclusive monitor of DVD sales, however my intention was more to remind Andro of some alternatives to watching what is current rather than to suggest a free market powered entertainment revolution.

It seems fairly obvious to me that the Destiny is travelling to the homeworld of the Furlings.

Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

I'm not even joking about this - that would completely redeem every past mistake the show has made in my eyes. It would be... glorious.
