I'm gonna have to agree with Zor. Just because the in-story characters make them out to be scary doesn't mean they're scary to read about. Have you ever read anything in 40k that's actually scary-scary? I doubt it. It's all just a bunch of banners with skulls on them hanging from spikes on topped of banner spike skulls on spiked skull banners impaled on a skullspike with a banner. Hell, the scariest piece of sci-fi I read was probably 1984.
I'd nominate the Blob and the Monster of the Id as pretty scary alien creatures. I mean, the first bits when the blob was just a tiny thing that first attached itself to you and slowly digestified you little by little, that was scary. And I remember being frightened as a kid when the Monster of the Id was all indivisible and the spacemen had to shoot it with pew-pew lightning fields.

That's because, given history and human nature, it's not that far from reality.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Hell, the scariest piece of sci-fi I read was probably 1984.
For me, another vote for the Thing, and most things Lovecraftian.
Yeah, the Blob scared the shit out of me as a child. The whole being eaten/digested alive bit. And once it attached itself there was no real way to get it off short of hacking off a limb.Shroom Man 777 wrote:I'd nominate the Blob and the Monster of the Id as pretty scary alien creatures. Mr. Harley: Your impatience is quite understandable.
Klaatu: I'm impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it.
Mr. Harley: I'm afraid my people haven't. I'm very sorry... I wish it were otherwise.

Personnally i prefer horror sci-fi with a level of intense and negative dehumanization. An alien race that builds and operates vast automated factory farms were humans are raised naked like pigs for meat and leather (properly described in detail with adequete buildup and so forth) is terrifying in ways that mere "humans are hunted down by predator species X".

That actually might work, particularly on the 88 version that turned into little crystals or such when exposed to cold. Though it would have to still be small and someone would have to act quick. At times the blob could eat rather quickly, and I'd hate to see what damage is done to someone who had it temporarily attached to a sizable portion of their body, head and/or face. Ick!Zor wrote:Fire Extingisher?Temujin wrote:Yeah, the Blob scared the shit out of me as a child. The whole being eaten/digested alive bit. I don't know about scary-scary, but I remember one Gaunt's Ghosts story that left me feeling extremely uncomfortable. It was the one with the drums that turns the one guy into a daemon.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Have you ever read anything in 40k that's actually scary-scary?
