Battle of the (somewhat) stereotypical wizards.

Post by Master of Ossus »

Okay, we all knew it was coming. Professor Dumbledore (Harry Potter) against Gandalf the Grey (Lord of the Rings) against Merlin (Le Morte D'Arthur). Free for all on some small island in the British Isles. Last one standing wins the day. Who is it and why?

My vote goes for Gandalf. Main reason - he is a non-human, a Maiar Spirit. If his body is destroyed, he'll still be pretty much Ok. Aside from that, Gandalf has used Magic in battle a bit more often than the other two contenders.

I don't think there is any proof what so ever that Gandalf was born at least to humans, He staves off a Balrog, falls into a never ending pit, then chases the Balrog and slays it, then dies, becomes reborn and continues to kick ass. In Harry Potter it is suppossed that wizards are born as there are quotes stating something like you were such when you were born and so on which means the wizards in HP are mere mortals Gandalf would take dumbledors testicals to 5 grit sandpaper without even lifting his staff. Merlin I know very little about, I never read that much on the wizard but I don't think he uses his magic very often, I believe he is of a mortal form also, Merlin could never live 9,000 odd years like Gandalf. Gandalf carries Merlin to bear infested cave rubs the most expensive and delisous portion of honey in the world on Merlin's testicles and dances around the room laughing his Grey or White ass off. Gandalf is thee greatest.

Merlin, AFAIK, is half mortal. Not that that alone proves anything.

Dumbledore's power has been largely left a mystery, so it's hard to say what he's capable of.

Hey man, Dumbledore can change banners hanging off the ceiling! Although still insignificant, next to the power of the Force.

Actually, Merlin is also immortal. In fact, the only way he was "killed" was that he was tricked into a cave, which was sealed so he could never escape.

Has anyone ever rea the books bout Merlin? Lemme give it to ya straight: hes all powerful. Nobody could kill him. He was superdy duperdy unstoppable. The only thing that could kill him was old age. Really.

And I don't remember any of this cave stuff......

Which books did you read, DGG? I was referring to Le Morte D'Arthur Merlin, not one of those other versions of the book. Merlin is immortal, he has no problems with old age, much like Gandalf, and he was tricked into a cave. That is why he was unable to help Arthur when Arthur fought his climactic battle with his illegitimate son, Mordred (before Sir Lancelot had a chance to return with his forces).

Well first off Dumbledore goes down HARD. I'm not impressed by him, the guy seems to let HArry do all the work... (Yes, yes I know why out of the books but, in the books would do what Dumbledore has done if you where in Dumbledore's place?) That leaves Gandalf and Merlin, the two size each other up, give a nod of respect and get down to the actual fighting. Unfortunatly at this point we don't get to see what happen's during the fight, their power's masked from the outside world in order to not reveal the full extent of it, emerging from the arena is... Merlin, because being the first counts in such close run things.

After one hell of a fire fight with both side taking a beating and Dumbledor being blasted to such a extent that all the wizards in all of literature could not save him gandalf emerges tired and naked, but victor.

And then.

Does Dumbledore have the ability to "create" matter? Professor McConnegal (Head of Transfigurations) seems to have this ability. One scene in The Chamber of Secrets had her conjuring a self-refilling silver tray of sandwiches on a table. Another scene had her conjuring a fan "out of thin air". And let's not forget Dumbledore's own conjuring of an entire banquet for the students in the Great Hall. Would they acquire the material from nearby sources (even basic elements such as carbon in the air, and perhaps silver in the table), thus obeying the conservation of energy? Or did they truly use apocolyptic amounts of energy to create all this matter?

Lucky my perfect reading memory helps here as I recived the set of books as a gift some years ago

Now then from my understand that particular thing is teleportation not matter-creation as why else would they have Kitichens beneath the Dining Hall?

Furthmore why have they not remodled the place thanks to all that gold they could be zapping into existance(Remeber the plot of the first book a Stone that makes Gold and Drink that makes you imortal? If they could create matter as complex as what has been show then how then do they even need said stone?)

Why not throw DOug Henning into the mix? I'm sure his mix of magic and yogic flying would amaze his adversaries.
