The book bugs had technology. The movie bugs somehow evolved biological structures suitable for space travel! Argh.
That fort has to get credit for same of the worst sighting of all times. The thing is at the end of a gully, limiting them to one escape route, which is also the most likely attack avenue, and is surrounding on three sides by higher ground.
Too true, just horrible. And worse yet, they didn't bother finding a hard granite or otherwise relatively impenetrable base for the fort, and they did not compensate for this brain-damaged placement by laying a heavy artificial foundation, so the bugs were able to easily burrow underneath and pop up into the base. They didn't even use an armoured floor. You could see from the bug tunnel in the galley that the base floor was nothing but thin sheet metal, dropped right on top of dirt!
All very stupid. A nice thick anti personal minefield also would have been infinitely useful, the bugs are so stupid you could surface laid them. A final line of oversized claymores around the base of the Forts walls also would have been good.

A ditch would have helped as well, god forbid they should bring a bulldozer along with an invasion force that’s crossing the galaxy.

Anti tank obstacles would have been helpful in breaking up the momentum of a bug assault. A bunch of Belgian gates would have done a good job, especially if fitted with mines to kill any bugs that try to chew through them.

And then of course ten times the number of crew served weapon..
And when the damn dropships came to pick them up, why didn't have any of those bombers with it to provide some cover?
Come to think of it, why don't the dropships have miniguns or some other support armament besides "heroic moron standing in the door and firing his rifle"? [/Quote]

Because they blew the speical effects budget on the ground to space bug farts. Really though, the drop ship from Aliens with its nose gun and over sized Hellfires would have been just think thing for picking up those troops.
That whole thing is living proof of why you should not use Zulu as research material for sci fi.

The biggest mistake in the movie?

Getting rid of the powered armour, and not replacing all the vehicles that the armour is supposed to supplement.

I can understand why they would ditch tanks and atmospheric jets when they have the badass armour seen in the book. I don't agree, but I understand. But in the movie, we just have glorified infantrymen... And no tanks! No jets! Why? Because in the book, the troopers were so heavily armed they didn't need such most of the time.. But in the movie, they just have rifles!

Ugh.

I thought as much, but didn't remember how active you were in there. The AB-36...mmm.... :)

It's been awhile, though I've pretty much read the one about the B-36s over Nazi Germany.

IIRC, the AB-36 was the result of a post about gunship ops in Afghanistan, rather then one of the B-36>Soviet Union in the 1950s treads. I spent most of it arguing the merits of an automatic 50mm gun in place of both the 105 and 40mm on the AC-130 with Burnside.
