Red Faction: Origins

Post by Enigma »

Saw it on SyFy and I thought it was pretty good considering that AFAIK, it is a SyFy production. Interesting cast and the SFX wasn't too bad.

It was entertaining and that is all I expected from the movie.

Your thoughts?

Think the soldiers in white trained with the storm troopers. The corridor where a crap load of them get the shit kicked out of them by two people was pathetic though.

Hold on a second - does this have anything to do with the Red Faction games?

It's a prequel to the one that's coming out soon.

The protagonist is the son of the player character from Guerrilla

Haha. I might seek this out. How wooden is the acting? Does it have action scenes where the camera cuts every three seconds?

Suprisingly for a Syfy movie the acting is decent.

A quick googling and a look at its wiki page shows that this was made by a subsidiary of NBC universal and UFO films. While UFO films definitely looks like the type of movie company that makes SyFy movies, it is not the same one that is responsible for Megashark.

Also, RF:O was a pilot. So if it did well, they're looking to make a series.

I was quite surprised by how good it was, considering it was a SciFi original movie. But the entire movie I was waiting for Alec Mason to grab a sledgehammer and destroy some stuff and it never happened.

I love Red Faction: Guerrilla unnatural amounts, it was an awesome game for me.

The trailer for the pilot looked like it captured the feel, but disregarding that the protagonist is the RFG character's son and not him, I still think it would be a shame if this show was in any way lacking in sledgehammery goodness..

Yep. It was good, but the lack of sledgehammers really brought it down for me.

(I mean, what is Red Faction but a bunch of Martians with sledgehammers destroying stuff?!)

- It was...okay and I'm only saying that because I've seen far, far worse. The sum total of my experience with the Red Faction games comes from playing the demo for the first game years ago. I've only got general knowledge of the various plots of the individual installments. Origins, on its own, is no doubt better than 99% of the SyFy SciFi original movies out there but that's hardly what you'd call praise. The conviction of the performances is what makes it work.
- The effects were average to sub-par (with some of the worst offenders reminding me of PC game cutscenes from 1997). Why couldn't they have enlisted the special effects team that worked on Battlestar Galactica or Stargate Universe?
- Tess, the resident Earth migrant, was obnoxious in the extreme. Hey, maybe it's not the fact that you're Earth-born that's the problem but that you keep whining about discrimination where there isn't any! "I should've sold you," indeed.
- The cast had quite a few sci-fi alumni in there. I was expecting Mark Sheppard to make an appearance.
- Apparently this was supposed to be a pilot for a series. I can't really see it having enough mileage for that but maybe I'll be proven wrong. If something does come out of this I assume there will be some sort of explanation for the drastic change in Adam Hale's appearance in Red Faction: Armageddon (or how he managed to survive the destruction of the dreadnought for that matter).

At least stormtroopers had the common sense to shoot at their opponents most of the time. These chumps went down to enemies wielding hand to hand weapons when they had plenty of time to gun them down. In a wide open corridor. What makes the outcome of that last fight even more ridiculous is that both Leo and his father come out of it without a scratch. Oh, so a bunch of scavengers are a problem but trained E.D.F. soldiers are a pushover? Come on. I'm betting the White Faction goons lined up to get taken out one by one. A firefight, instead of melee combat, would have been far more logical. Speaking of firefights the movie had a distinct lack of shoot-outs, which was a disappointment.
