EVE Online Novels??

Post by Whiskey144 »

So, I recently graduated, and a friend of mine gave me a gift card to Amazon. I've been looking over the site, checking out some things I'd like to get.

I noticed they have two EVE Online novels in stock; The Empyrean Age and The Burning Life. Are they any good? From reading the Chronicles on the EVE site and the short novellas that they've got for PDF download, CCP Games seems to have some good writers working for them on these novels and whatnot.

I read the first half of the Empyrean age about six months ago before I lost interest and started on a different book.

It's better than a lot of video game to novel adaptations, but it's not that good in it's own right. While I can't remember specific details about it, I due remember groaning reading certain parts of it.

But if you're a fan of EVE Online's backstory, I don't think it would be a massive mistake if you bought it. My taste isn't your taste. Just remember to turn your brain off for certain parts, and don't expect Hugo-award quality.

I actually read over some of the reviews for each, and decided that The Empyrean Age would be a good choice, especially as the novellas are written by the same author and I enjoyed them very much, whilst The Burning Life is a bad idea, as it seems to have been very poorly received.

I've read both, and Empyrean Age has the advantage of shedding light on some of the less well explained plot points in the EVE story, telling exactly how Tibus Heth comes to power and how that affects the Caldari-Gallente relationship. It may be very dry in some parts but if you like EVE you could find it very interesting.

The Burning Life suffers from a clear lack of purpose. It follows a set of characters from some of the lesser known factions in the game and then they do...stuff. There's very little overarching plot, its as if you're watching a tour guide describe some of the specifics of the universe. It comes off as very unprofessional, almost fan fiction. By the time the ending twist comes along, I simply didn't care.
