You know, this COULD be a good popcorn flick.

What I just do not understand is why they feel it is needed to use a game "BATTLESHIP!" as its supposed basis. Well scratch that, I know why and it is what we are doing right now. If they had just come out and said "Action flick with aliens and battleships" It would have been good, but recieved a "meh" from most. But by saying "Based on the game BATTLESHIP!" the internet does a big OMG!!! and suddenly they have millions in free hype and advertising.

As others have said, Hollywood does not do orginal well. POTC was a rare surprise. of course it had Pirates. And you can do a LOT with Pirates! Buttle Battleships? In modern times? With Aliens?

This does not bode well. It may be fun once action gets going, but I have a feeling any "story" is goign to be quickly forgot.

Yeah pretty much this. Most sci-fi flicks tend to forget about the Navy entirely (even the airforce as seen in every zombie movie ever).
That, or they have the Navy get their asses kicked, like that scene in Revenge of the Fallen where Megatron wakes up and flattens an entire carrier battle group inside of ten seconds. Similar thing happened in Stargate: SG-1 when Anubis invaded Earth.

As a Navy brat twice over*, I find that very insulting.

As a viewer of Stargate SG1, I would have found it very insulting (to my intelligence) to have the Nimitz battlegroup do anything but die when attacked by a Ha'tak.

A better Stargate example is Small Victories, where the USN actually does blow up the Replicators.

No, I get that (in fact, it occurred to me after I posted). I just think the Air Force and Marines and whatnot get too much screen time in alien invasion movies.

You know, I'm curious about something.
The aliens have blocked out all the sensors and such right, like radar.
Now, I want to know how this is going to affect the director radar for things like most of those ships primary armaments. I mean, while the gun might be capable of visual direction (I don't know), I doubt you can visually direct a harpoon or a tomohawk. In addition to this, the phalanx systems are radar based, and we see one being used, so how does that work?
Do the aliens have special anti-search-but-not-anti-targeting-radar-blockers?
I don't think I'm going to like this film.

Hey, it's going to contain battleships in action, you'll HAVE to like at least a few scenes of it :P
Which is probably all i am going to end up watching from that movie.

If someone cuts down the entire film to the bits with ships shooting at each other, I might watch it. I do not care for any of the love story, car chase bullshit. :P

Don't search and fire-control/tracking radars work on different wavelengths or frequencys? If they do, there's you solution, the anti-radar shield blots out the freqs used for search radar but not those for fire control.

As for radar tracking Harpoons and Tomahawks, don't they use GPS or inertial guidance systems not radar?

I caught the trailer with "Cowboys and Aliens" (anyone else see it yet...I don't see a thread).

I actually caught the teaser poster right before walking into the movie and chuckled. I honestly had no clue what the hell I was watching a trailer for, and assumed it was the generic "alien invasion" flick until a I saw a glimpse of an Iowa class battleship and went - "Wait a second..."

The audience reaction doesn't bode well ("LOL" sums it up), so word of mouth better be damn good for this film, or it doesn't have a prayer.

Like Skylon, I saw it during the previews before Cowboys and Aliens (which was fantastic, by the way, despite an unusual premise that the aliens are on Earth because of a cosmic gold rush).

As for why Liam Neeson decided to get involved in something this silly, I can only infer what I inferred from his involvement in The A-Team*: he's made so much money from his many blockbusters that at this point he feels free to just take on roles for teh lolz.

(I generally make a point of not using texting slang, but it works here.)

You know, I love the idea of Neeson just thinking "ha, this'll be a fucking blast. Screw it, I'm gonna be an Admiral"
