Redline

So has anyone seen this anime movie? It's by Madhouse, one of the best known studios for crazy detail, amazing action, and generally a good story. The premise of Redline is as you probably guessed, a race. This time it's set in the future so there's plenty of aliens, cyborgs, spaceships, and the such. Of course the main character, that sweet JP, still drives a souped up Trans Am because there will never be anything better than that. Honestly it's not a complex movie and is kind of hard to describe without spoiling it. It has been released in Japan (where it did terribly) and will be released in America.



All the official trailers for this movie are pretty terrible but whatever here's a taste.

I actually went to see this in a little Tasmanian cinema before it came out in Japan. It's a really spectacular film, debut director Koike Takeshi's style seeps into basically every frame. It's wild and stylish and really 'alive' as a piece of animation. It would be easy to dismiss it as just being one of those 'oh so crazy' type productions, but there's a layer of subtlety an nuance to it beneath the frames. Also the soundtrack is bosssss.

Hmmm. I think I'll watch this. It looks interesting. I'm guessing it won't be hitting any theaters, though.

Well I've heard there's a number of reasons it didn't do well in Japan. First off the movie took like seven years to produce and went over budget because of this. I think because of cost overruns they had to keep the theaters showings to a minimum. I also heard the advertising wasn't that great. And honestly, this is not really the kind of movie Japanese audiences usually go for. Unless it's a Studio Ghibli movie or a movie based on a popular franchise like Bleach or Naruto then people don't go for it. A lot of the old guard of anime fans have compared the film to like an old 80's or late 90's OVA. Those have generally done better overseas where the market is more accepting of them. In Japan these kinds of things are niche. Anime in general in Japan is pretty niche outside of the mainstream titles and Redline isn't something that appeals to the modern fans.

I'm sure the K-On movie will do very well :v

The failing may be but i have always liked simple racing movies. Plus there are CYBORGS, most awsome scifi creation ever!
