Official Doctor Who crossover with Star Trek.

Post by The Romulan Republic »

Well, this is interesting. I'm glad it'll feature the current Doctor and Picard. The presence of the Enterprise D suggests its set way back before the TNG films, although there could be Timey-Wimey shenanigans going on. I scoff at the article's inaccuracies. They refer to the Doctor as "Doctor Who" and saying the Cybermen are a greater enemy than the Daleks is absurd.

IDW's TNG/Doctor Who Crossover Comic Due In May

By StarTrek.com Staff
February 13, 2012
It’s official. And it only took five decades to happen. Yes, Star Trek and Doctor Who, two of the most popular and venerable franchises in entertainment history, will cross over for the first time ever in Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #1. Set for release in May by IDW Publishing, Assimilation2 #1 – the first in a series of eight adventures -- teams up Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise and Doctor Who and his companions when the entire galaxy is threatened by an unholy alliance between their respective greatest nemeses, the Borg and the Cybermen.

Scott and David Tipton, in collaboration with Tony Lee, wrote Assimilation2, while J.K. Woodward provided the art and Woodward and David Messina realized the covers. The Tiptons are best known for Star Trek: Infestation, while Woodward is well respected for his work illustrating IDW’s Fallen Angel series. Variants will include a rare wrap-around photo cover and one by Joe Corroney, featuring the TARDIS crew aboard the Enterprise. Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #1 will run 32 pages and sell for $3.99.

Well they did Star Trek and Legion of Superheroes, which so far seems decent. Lets see how they pull it off with Doctor Who and Star Trek. I will however spew up if the Borg are somehow more powerful than some of the Who races.

The Cybermen tend to be pushovers who get quickly curb stomped. If they lose humiliatingly it'll just be par for the course.

Now if it were the Daleks, then I would expect masses of exterminated Borg.

It depends on which version of the Cybermen really. In Earthshock they were pretty powerful. Newer Cybermen not so much.

The Mondas Cybermen definitely weren't as pushy-over-y as the Cybus ones are.

I think it's great that the Cybermen and the Borg are being teamed up.

How could they not be bff's? :D

I dunno about that, aren't they as vulnerable to gold as the recent "Cybus" ones are vulnerable to strong emotions?

I'd thought the later ones got rid of that weakness...

Just looked in the wiki, and no, they didn't. My mistake.

Interestingly enough, it appears the 11th Doctor actually has encountered Mondas Cybermen as well (in "Closing Time").

They may still be vulnerable to gold, but if you didn't realise it (eg Earthshock) they could be deadly. Plus they can create powerful robots to do the dirty work for them.

But a Star Trek story doesn't just have mano on mano combat. There is also ship to ship combat. The Cybermen stocked enough bombs on an Earth ship equivalent to the dino killer asteroid (because due to time travel it turned out to be the dino killer asteroid). So one would imagine their weapons are powerful.

Though not officially stated, the Cybermen featured in the 11th Doctor era seem to "Cybus" Cybermen who have taken up the trappings of the "Mondas" branch (and now seem to be a significant galactic superpower with large fleets of warships stationed everywhere).

I realise most of those we see appear to be Cybus ones (such as those in "A Good Man Goes To War"- they still have a marking on their chest, just no longer the Cybus logo), but the shipload encountered in "Closing Time" are explicitly stated to have crashed there hundreds of years beforehand. While there's always the possibility that time travel put them there, it's also possible they were some of the last Mondasians.
