Revolution S1E5 "Soul Train"

Post by amigocabal »

Miles, Charlie, and co. must stop a train and save Danny. A few observations.
Spoiler
We see Tom Neville's life in the aftermath of the Blackout. to protect his family, he beat a neighbor severely, possibly to death, who had broken into his house. Neville was visibly shaken.
Spoiler
While even the most naive of rebels would not be surprised at Monroe experimenting with steam engines, the rebels were surprised that Monroe had a locomotive as far west as Noblesville (a town near Indianapolis). This implies that Monroe has multiple steam locomotives operating in the greater Philadelphia area (and, of course, stationary steam engines used for industrial applications). Indeed, in a later scene we see a functioning railroad station serving civilian passengers, not just militia soldiers on active duty.
Spoiler
Nora initially wanted to destroy the train, and she dismisses concerns that Danny might ber killed by saying that the others should rescue Danny first. She tries to stop the bomb when the train leaves early with Danny on it, but is stabbed by a rebel who wants that train to blow.
Spoiler
"Nate" is actually Jason, Neville's son.

I did enjoy the focus on Neville. He was a family man who was not violent. We see how he had to change his behavior just to survive. It was touching on how he had to train tbhe young Jason on howe to use a knife.

So, we saw a map of what North America looks like, and it seems the Monroe Republic controls pretty much all of the Northeastern United States.

Or at least claims the northeastern United States. From what we have seen of Illinois and Indiana, that is pretty much wilderness with town interspersed. Pennsylvania seems to have the highest population density within the Republic.
Spoiler
One of the footnotes on this site implies that the locomotive was the Republic's first operational steam locomotive. As to why Monroe's people did not simply make one in Philadelphia, or outfitted an existing locomotive with a steam engine, it is possible that they tried, but kept failing and needed an old-style steam locomotive to study further. The railroad station in Philadelphia was likely served with horse-drawn or ox-drawn trains.
There are two more spoilers I did not mention in the original post.
Spoiler
The Republic is being invaded on its frontiers by the Georgia Federation and the Plains Nation, revealing why Monroe seeks to restore electricity. While the Georgia Federation's territory is mostly lightly populated, due to the high pre-Blackout population density resulting in starving hordes overrunning the lowlands, the Plains Nation is a different matter.

At least nine states- Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Utah- are in the Plains Nation. Even assuming a 90% die-off of the metro areas of Minneapolis, Denver, Colorado Springs, Kansas City, and St. Louis (a generous estimate), that would still leave a population of over eighteen million people. The Plains could raise a fighting force of three million, and they could easily sweep all the way from the Mississippi River to the Appalachians. Monroe knows this, and wants technology to counteract the sheer numbers of his enemies.

Of course, this begs the question of why the Plains Nation did not try to take Illinois and Indiana before.
And another spoiler.
Spoiler
Rachel reveals to Monroe that she and Ben worked on the project that caused the Blakcout. She reveals the existence of twelve pendants. We have seen three of the pendants.
