I enjoyed Defiance enough to give it a second look. The last 2 minutes and the reveal of who the 'evil mastermind' is pissed me off, though.

Really? Of all the things that was the one that didn't sit well? It was filled with cliches like that.

I readily admit that it was. Hell, the 'criminal turned lawman' has been around since Louis L'amour and The Iron Marshall. I just enjoyed the setting that framed the familiar in a new way. I liked how the 'rebellious teenage alien' had dyed his hair black to look more human and piss off his parents. I especially liked the alien crime lord and his wife, my favorite moment was when he announced that he'd forgive the debts of anyone who fought for the city and then suddenly got the bigger applause that he so desperately wanted.

Like I said, it wasn't amazing but it was enough to make me want to watch the next 3 or 4 episodes.

It's piqued my interest, which is the job of a pilot. I await to see what is next, and if it can get better now that they've established everything and played the western plot, or if they're played out and have nowhere to go.

I liked the parallels tonight between alien cultures and earth's various 'respect our cultures' groups, to the point of them even doing anti-vaccination aliens. The mob boss is pretty dark, I'm starting to like him.

I had found out about this series when the second season of American revolutionwar... i mean falling skyes ended, and the trailer looked promising. I had hoped that the series and the story would be more down to earth, lifelike( earth is nuked, terraformed and full of new aliens and the humies and xeno are trying to live togeather.). But insted i get a show with cheese all over. (Hot)Blondy major wants peace for everyone, loves democraty and is in love in nolan. The aliens....
Oh my...

is it so hard for writers to come up with NON human like aliens that act ALIEN
Insted we get some noble halfass drow race, Monkey orangutan big aliens, weird sarcastic/cinic doctor aliens, flatnosed hyppie aliens and the furry butler alien. And they all act human.

At least the FS show has those green crab things and big gray ones.

But the thing i felt was weak and cheap is the twilightish element of young girl thats in love in emo alien dork. KILL MAIM BURN!!!!

Reall cheap plot lines. The army that attacked the town showed promise but the writers managed to screw even that one up, by detonating the techjo thing...

Sometimes i wish i had 1 billion dollars so i can make my own scyfi series with normal characters that act accordingly to their setting and not in FSky way( earth nuked but lets teach kids to play instead of survive)

I think this show wont last long which is a shame since a lot of bad shows lately have been making the whole ganre bleak, repetative and boring.

Are you talking about the Castithan? Because I'm having a hard time finding the 'noble' bit considering the main Castithan character we've focused on seems to be the head of the local organized crime.

1.) There are limits on how alien you can make a character and still have them remain relateable to your audience. If you make them too alien then there's no way for a human audience to connect with them.. not a great thing on a show where you have multiple alien characters.

2.) You're not seeing any of these alien cultures in a vacuum. You're seeing them after being cut down to a fraction of their former size, a prolonged period as refugees, a war, the loss of a good chunk of their remaining people, and then three more decades of mingling and interacting with humans.
At least the FS show has those green crab things and big gray ones.
It's easy for falling skies to make it's aliens seem more alien when there's rarely any non-shooting interaction between them and the humans.
But the thing i felt was weak and cheap is the twilightish element of young girl thats in love in emo alien dork. KILL MAIM BURN!!!!
... where the hell does the Twilight comparison come from? Given the family/power bloc disputes between their parents it's pretty clearly closer to a Romeo and Julietish element.

I don't see the problem given that thwarting the plot is kind of essential for the show to continue. Plus the thing had been around all episode (and IIRC a similar detonation has been mentioned in the show's background).
Sometimes i wish i had 1 billion dollars so i can make my own scyfi series with normal characters that act accordingly to their setting and not in FSky way( earth nuked but lets teach kids to play instead of survive)
Survival and play are not mutually exclusive (plus play is rather vital for socialization).

@ SylasGaunt
To me the story part about them traveling to earth and starting a war and then mingling with humans is ok. BUT the time period of the non violent interaction with humans is to short in my opinion for this level of human like behavior. If u look at our worlds cultures today for instances the amount of assimilation is by far smaller. (example - chinese people that come to america and in 25 years dont learn to speak english and their habits and lifestyle is the same.) - so how come the aliens had assimilated so well and after a hollocoust like war with humans?? To me its just bad plot writing. If the writers said it was 80-100 years after the war i would be more inclined to believe it...

- Twilight comparison...
 ok maybe im a bit off on that one, romeo and juliet is a way better metaphor,
but it sucks any way...
i mean emo aliens ... really ??? :banghead:

- cheapness
I think there are far better ways to thwart the plot story line. And if you do it differently you give the show a deeper aspect, and not a generic plot line ;; guy hates world, but saves it for no profit,...

-- survival & play
Dude play is vital for survival in our society.
But if Fs writers knew any thing they would not spend so much time on the kid playing in a military camp cuz his father is afraid of him not having a "childhood" :banghead: . I mean in that setting a proper childhood is impossible and a luxury that no one can afford if they plan on surviving.
---- bad writers trying to appeal to a broader audience...

For one thing, unlike the aforementioned immigrants who never learn English, there isn't much of a choice. There are parts of the US where you can get by knowing little to no English. On the other hand if you want to trade with people you have to be able to talk to them.

It's also noted that at least two of the Votan species are specifically noted to be highly adaptable in that way. Whereas you have others that aren't (hence the little bit from last week where we learn at one point the Defiance lawmen had to go door to door giving inoculations by force).

And that's leaving aside the fact we don't know much about the other Votan races, and the Volge are.. well not at all human in appearance.
i mean emo aliens ... really ???
Where is this emo alien thing coming from? The long hair? The fact that one of them is a punk teenager who's dying his hair to piss off his dad?
guy hates world, but saves it for no profit,...
Only if you ignore the bits where he repeatedly says he likes the town :p

A modern childhood is impossible yes, but a childhood with some relaxation and play with his peers is perfectly doable and even necessary if you want your future soldiers to be well adjusted and work well in groups since that's where the foundation for a lot of that is layed. Hell wild cats will let their offspring play and they don't even do the whole group dynamics thing nearly as much as humans.

Well, this latest episode was okay, not good, not bad, just okay. I felt like there was something about the Bioman's life or personality we were supposed to get to know, but never did.

I especially like Nolan figuring out who really wears the pants in the Tarr family.
