As for the name thing, it really isn't that prevalent.
It's only been in one episode of this season. I don't remember it being talked about so much with the Ponds around other than by the blue guy that got his head in a box.
River used it because she needed to and even then it was a tool and not some magical weapon. All it has done so far is open a big fucking door and make the Doctor trust River before he really should have.

My best guess? It will be used to do the ultimate regeneration and reset the Doctor to life number one and he will start over, but not be The Doctor but an actual reset, if they are smart anyway.
