Hope springs eternal with the new Doctor but the writing is really where the problems occur.
It will be interesting to see how long Capaldi lasts in Doctor Who without getting poached or tapping out.

The interview was interesting: Moffat giving Capaldi scenes based on a 'Doctor of his ilk'
Start the bets on which OldWho Doctor Moffat is going to try and emulate.

Incidentally, Capaldi's age means that at least one of your issues with having the Doctor's daughter return is no longer a concern.

As I am an eternal optimist, I'm hoping Moffat will have gotten the whole story arc (if you can call it that) out of his system. The Doctor faces his darkest secret, blah blah blah, then an entirely fresh start with Capaldi, without trying to awkwardly cobble a story together from the patchwork pieces of 3 whole series.

That could work for Torchwood... :P

Wonder how 12 will work with the Dalek Parliament?
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

His role in Torchwood 'Children of Earth' was pretty major, with his character's story being one of the most tragic in the series. A nod could be given to his prior role, with the Doctor regenerating in his form being a deliberate choice by the regeneration process and/of the Doctor.

I heard him speak on the radio, where he told the story of his daughter on the internet checking out the favored candidates and complaining that he wasn't named. At that stage he had already been selected but couldn't tell her as it was a secret at that time.

An excellent choice for a presumably different personality depiction to the frantic previous versions.

PREDATOR490 wrote:In theory having a daughter character might change the dynamic... but the writing for Doctor Who has been bad enough it would be entirely likely they turned it into a really creepy incest situation when you have the Doctor looking as old as his daughter and their childish writing.
The actress that played the daughter has quit to be a stay at home mum according to IMDB so that trailing story thread created by Moffat is a dead end.

As for the new Doctor: I will be astounded if they pick someone that is older than 40.
I fully expect the new Doctor to be 20 - 30 and be another wannabe funny guy.
ah, but at the end of the episode, she began to regenerate, so she could be anyone now. Even already someone seen in the series.

Aside from Idris Elba, he is the best choice.

But I fear Moffat will ruin him.

Turns out the kind of plot line that works for one episode doesn't when expanded to an entire series?

He clearly can't have as many good ideas to fill a series as he could the guest episodes he was writing. It'd be a mistake to think that someone can keep up superb writing for such long stints and I imagine you'd see similar issues if you had someone like Gaiman having to work to TV schedules now.

Some of the better episodes of late have been from fairly new writers too, so I recall.

Well, Gaiman has only written one TV series and that one had consistent quality.

True, but that was simply an adaptation of his own work, so I'd hope he wouldn't have problems in adapting to screen his other stuff, given he is able to write for both mediums. It's different to working on a show with numerous other writers and with deadlines and budget constraints that befit major show like DW.

I'm not saying he couldn't do it, in fact, I'd love him to be chief writer. I just think that it takes more out of you than working on a novel by yourself.

If you mean Neverwhere, the TV series was the original form; IIRC the novelisation was an adaption, including all the bits that never made it to TV or were spoiled by being done on the cheap.

Oh, I like that guy.
I would have also accepted Craig Ferguson. :)

The problem with Craig Ferguson is that he's come over the Dark Side become an American and I'm not sure the fanbase is ready for that. :P

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

I wouldn't know about the Dark Side bit but, well, he's Sheriff Carter. I'm still trying to adjust to Captain Jack Harkness being the villain in 'Arrow'.

I think you're mixing up Craig Ferguson with Colin Ferguson. Craig Ferguson is the one from the Drew Carey Show and has a talk show. Colin Ferguson is Canadian and was in Eureka.
