Godzilla vs. King Kong could be a big-screen reality, according to a Thursday report from Deadline. The outlet shared the news that Legendary Pictures’ high-profile “Kong: Skull Island” is moving studios from Universal to Warner Bros., the distributor of Legendary’s “Godzilla” franchise. And that’s no coincidence: According to Deadline, after “Skull Island” and the currently in-the-works “Godzilla” sequel, a movie pitting the two movie monster icons against each other is planned. It’s said that things are happening “very quickly,” with the deal stretching all the way to Japan, and Godzilla rights-holder Toho.
2014’s “Godzilla,” a co-production of Warner Bros. and Legendary, grossed $529.1 million worldwide. A sequel was announced for June 8, 2018. “Kong: Skull Island” — set on King Kong’s home turf — will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and star Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell, with a currently scheduled release date of March 10, 2017.

Why bother getting Tom Hiddleston? It stars King Kong and Godzilla, no one else is required. Get a bunch of decent low cost actors and spend that money putting together a 40 million dollar effects heavy punchup for sure to bring back three times as much money as you invest. My inner twelve year old loves giant monsters fighting yet more giant monsters.
Only problem is Zilla is 100 meters tall to King Kong's biggest showing at 45 meters so he will literally be half the size of big Z. Unless they shrink big Z as well (Per the other news piece he will be about five meters shorter than Godzilla to make it an even fight)

Re: Godzilla vs King Kong coming in 2017
Wasn't Kong exposed to some kind of radiation that caused him to massively increase in size even further in the original film?
Then again, the male MUTO in the 2014 gave Godzilla a decent-ish fight despite being considerably smaller than he was, from what I recall.

Fantastic.
As long as the fight scenes aren't bad repeats of the last film, I'm in.

I'm no monster movie expert, but isn't this an easy Godzilla win? Kong got put down by biplanes; Godzilla teabags steel and concrete high-rises and shrugs off artillery fire.

Well he pretty much won in the original from what I gather. I'm sure they'll find a way around whilst making absolutely no goddamn sense at all. It's in these movies' DNA not to, after all

That's...remarkably unsatisfying. Mash-ups should make sense, which is why it's Freddy vs. Jason and not Freddy vs. the Care Bears.

Re: Godzilla vs King Kong coming in 2017
Well...short of Kong recieving an incredble power-up, there IS no way this matchup will ever make sense. Or Godzilla being nerfed to hell.
Are you suggesting the Care Bears could not hold their own against Freddy Krueger? Tread lightly

Re: Godzilla vs King Kong coming in 2017
In the original, King Kong somehow developed the ability to gain strength from electricity. So similar to how Godzilla can be recharged by radiation, King Kong can be recharged by lightning. That gave him the ability to turn his hands into tazers and shock the hell out Godzilla, then beat him into the water.

As much as I loved the original as a kid I really hope that this doesn't get much traction going forward.
I suppose if it keeps the goofy feel of the original and is maybe someone's dream (kind of like Son of Godzilla) it might be fun. The fight scenes in the original were certainly fun.

Yeah because it was supposed to be Godzilla vs Frankenstein originally! Which makes even less sense, but that's where the electricity thing came from.Borgholio wrote:In the original, King Kong somehow developed the ability to gain strength from electricity.
As for this movie, it will all but certainly be horrible even by Godzilla standards unless they utterly discard the themes of the new American movie. And probably any way about it.

Even with a 50 meter height difference, you can still make the fight fair.
After all, Kong is a THINKING animal. Let him make and use tools, and use tactics.
i.e Climb up a Skyscrapper while holding something suitable to use as a knife or spear, and then jump on Godzilla's back.

Godzilla is also a thinking animal. We shall not speak further of the movie in which he talked though.

I wouldn't call the current version of Godzilla a thinking animal. Cunning, but not intelligent.

Isn't this entire website devoted to talking endlessly about a lop-sided mashup?Lagmonster wrote:That's...remarkably unsatisfying. Mash-ups should make sense, which is why it's Freddy vs. Jason and not Freddy vs. the Care Bears.
Anyway, it only has to make sense thematically, not in any sense realistically. Freddy vs Jason barely makes any sense - considering that one of them can only harm you in dreams, but they're both horror movie icons so whatever. (In retrospect, Jason vs. Mike Myers would make more sense, but I think the audience would forget which one is which.) Godzilla and King Kong are the most iconic big monsters that punch skyscrapers, so there you go.
But yeah... I mean, isn't King Kong around the size of an adult Tyrannosaurus? And since a fight with a Tyrannosaurus was somewhat of a struggle for him, I don't see how he can possibly go against Godzilla, without being severely upgraded.
Anyway, I always feel bad for the screenwriters who have to go through the motions of putting together some semblance of a plot and/or characters to setup the actual monster fights.
Re: Godzilla vs King Kong coming in 2017
They should just drop the pretense and give us a Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla or vs King Ghidora, but with modern effects, (though still keep the appearances very close to their original ones).
Re: Godzilla vs King Kong coming in 2017
And why bash a Freddy vs the Care Bears?
I can see that working.
Whenever Freddy is invading someone's dreams, CARE BEAR STARE!

Yeah, Freddy loses that one fairly easily.
On topic, yawn, one more remake, maybe if I hear good things I'll catch it some time after it comes out on Amazon or Netflix.

I am glad I wasn't the only one who thought the Care Bears would beat Freddy with the power of the Care Bare Stare, which actually makes you want to care about stuff.
