Wing Commander question

Post by Crazy_Vasey »

How on earth does Privateer 2 fit in with the rest of the series?

It takes place a long, long time later in a star system a pretty long ways away . . .

(Actually, it's in 2789 or something, over 100 years after the last WC game. Tri-System is probably somewhere out around the Border Worlds or something. I'll have to check Bandit LOAF's WC map)

Good point -- I never thought about the time period in which Privateer 2 took place, but the lack of Kilrathis as combat opponents should have been a leading indicator that it took place well after the destruction of Kilrah.

Actually, there are a few Kilrathi ships in the game, but they tend to be in the distant reaches of space, or you have to go hunting for them.

REALLY?! WHERE?! WHERE?!

I quite liked Privateer 2...

Did you guys see the Privateer reference in it? There's a mission where they find an unknown ship- it is clearly a Talon (the ubiquitious easy to kill with two Pilums pirate ship from Privateer 1).

Read the manual. The Kilrathi are there. I dueled a Dralthi once, too.

Well other then vague references to the rest of WC, Privateer 2 ALMOST seems to be a different series all together. It seems to take place in an EXTREMELY backwater system and either the Terran Confederation fell, or some other government controls this region of space.

Maybe that region of space lost its connection to the rest of the confederacy somehow? Can jumpgates be destroyed or just plain fail in WC?

Yes, jumpgates can be destroyed, or just dissapear which really doesn't lead to good results.

I'm somewhat interested, however, in the fellow that fought Dralthi in Privateer 2... since there aren't any Dralthi in the game...

This will sound strange, bt its a semi-sequal. Its a sequal, but not an official, recognized one. It has to do with some strange legal trouble or whatnot. I can't explain better than that, but it is, in fact, technically a non-Wing Commander game.

You, my friend, are very very wrong. Privateer 2 was originally titled, in development, "The Darkening". The Wing Commander title was added later in development and a few things incorporated into the general background that placed it a bit better in the Wing Commander Universe. It wasn't developed by the Maverick team nor was it even developed at the Texas offices of Origin, but it is quite definately a Wing Commander game and a sequel. Origin has, whenever questioned, acknowledged it as part of the Wing Commander Universe about a hundred years after prophecy, in an area of space that has had contact with the Confederation but is seperated from it.

I will also point out that they have access to non-jump faster than light drive that is mentioned in at least one news article.
