Saruman: You want to follow me, don't you... Embrace the Power of the Ring (delivered in best magical compulsion line)

Yoda: Much to learn have you.

Begin gigantic battle with lightsabers, magical blades, force pushes against magical attacks...

15 minutes later...

Yoda: Hmmmm... difficult opponent this was. But for wisemen of the forces of good having martial strength, anticipate he did not.

Never underestimate the power of a muppet on crack...

On a more serious note--hmm...if Yoda is powerful enough to counter Sauruman's pushes he used on gandalf, Yoda beats Sauruman.

Yoda DID lift an X-Wing, large column, etc., though he has to concentrate to do so...dunno how he'd do against Sauruman there...heavier objects, but we don't know how distracted/how much power Sauraman was using on Gandalf, plus Sauruman can move while using his power...

Off hand, if it was a contest of staring into the palantir until one got corrupted by Sauron, or another test of will/reasoning, Yoda would probably win...
Physical/magical contest is up in the air...

The Fellowship of the Ring only showed a small part of Saruman's power. He's a Maiar, which are a race of immortal magical superbeings. They're like angels, if you need a comparison.

I think Yoda, despite his awe-inspiring fighting skills, gets beaten by Saruman in this one.

True but the wizards have taken physical form in middle earth and are thus subject to all the weaknesses in that form. Saruman can be slain with a blade. Based on pure combatitive skills I would give Yoda the victory.

Yoda's lightsaber gives him a huge advantage over Saruman's physical weapons, but the battle would almost certainly come down to the Force vs. Saruman's magic. I would guess that depends largely on what time frame Saruman comes from, as he gets much weaker over the course of the books, even before Gandalf breaks his staff.
