I think the movie did a good job of making that system look bad.

And do I have to start a new rant about how the Heinlein system would succumb to inevitable corruption, no matter the initial promises made by it's government, and become a self-perpetuating oligarchy not too-dissimilar to Classical Sparta, that hated Tyrant State of Classical Greece? (Until Epaminondas torched Laconia and liberated the subjugated Helots of Messenia; ALL HAIL EPAMINONDAS, THE GREATEST OF THE GREEKS!)
