That final monologue reminds me of The Humanoids by Fred Williamson. The robots decide they are going to serve and protect you and that they don't need your imput on how to go about doing it.
"The real trouble with this world of ours is not that it is an unreasonable world, nor even that it is a reasonable one.
The commonest kind of trouble is that it is nearly reasonable, but not quite.
Life is not an illogicality, yet it is a trap for logicians.
It looks just a little more mathematical and regular than it is; its' exactitude is obvious; but its' inexactitude is hidden; its' wildness lies in wait."
-G. K. Chesterton

Fucking hell!
I'm really glad I didn't read any of the spoilers posted around here, but even without that, the nuke detonation sent me skidding off the rails in the opening credits.
I believe I now understand why this was considered to be a risky move on the part of Moore. You're asking the audience for a lot. To be able to jump ahead when you've been plodding along in the story at a much slower pace, then suddenly WHAM, you've got about 10,000 souls dead, reestablishment on a shitty world, everyone in a different place, you name it. I dare say it would strain credibilty somewhat to have everyone end up back where they were before even if they can rescue those on New Caprica. In any event, you know the oBSG purist nutjobs will jump on this and decry it as an abomination.
I think it'll take me a bit to process this one. There was a hell of a lot of story here. My initial reaction was that everything flowed almost too quickly, but that could be because of the year jump. Up until that point it didn't seem too bad. But so many things by that point had been turned on it's head as to be completely fucked up.
Nicely played on the part of the Cylons, though. Very nicely played. There's your plan.
I wonder where Sharon is in all this. Possibly STILL in Galactica's brig? That'd be my best guess. We didn't see her around.
So much to process. Brain melt down.

That's the sound of the aftermath of a mindfuck. Whoa. Did not see that last half hour coming, not by a long shot. My only complaint is what they did to Baltar's character; sure, a Baltar presidency would've been disastrous but they turned it into a total 2-dimensional incompetant, corrupt, childish trainwreck. Kinda like the Bush administration. So I guess it isn't entirely without precident.
Now, on to business:

She has to be alive, or Helo probably wouldn't be on Adama's bridge.CaptJodan wrote:I wonder where Sharon is in all this. Possibly STILL in Galactica's brig? That'd be my best guess. We didn't see her around.

Moore made the right decision to abandon the fleet being chased plot. He simply couldn't have sustained that for much longer; already at this forum we were tiring of the nebulous Cylon plan that had no resolution.

NO, Brother-Captain, don't do it! If you do it, you'll never get to see the next season!!
Is it a crime to try and learn the truth? Is it a sin to search for those things which you fear? My purpose in this world is knowledge, and the dissemination of it. And it is I who is to restore the fruits of my labors to the entire world. Wake up! Don’t be afraid of knowledge! Humans who loose the capacity to think become creatures whose existence has no value. Think, you humans who are split into two worlds! Unless you want the gulf between humans to expand into oblivion, YOU MUST THINK! - Schwarzwald

I think that 39,000+ population only referred to New Caprica City. The other 10,000 could still be in orbit with the fleet.

Trying to calm down and make some notes...
- It looked like Tyrol was becoming a Trotsky-type revolutionary.
- Duella apparently is now an officer based on the uniform. Guess they really got short on personnel, course frakkin' Commander Apollo helps.
- Wonder where Boomer ended up. Still on Galactica? Helo apparently stuck it out on the Bucket.
- "People change"...yeah, Jesus, I never thought I'd see Starbuck as happy as she was to see Col. Tigh of all people.
- Gaeta. Okay guys, he's not a Cylon. At least I doubt it. He's always apparently simply had a respect or liking for Baltar. I think he might be gay to be perfectly honest and have a little hard-on for Baltar.
- I was going to say I was pissed that the destruction of Cloud 9 was spoiled by the opening credits, but the episode provided so many other shocks to blow my brain that I can live with that.
- I suspect Olmos just got tired of shaving the moustache off and will be sticking with it through season 3.

A significant portion of the population could have been wiped out by the nuclear explosion. The Cloud 9 was the largest habitable ship (there's a mining ship from the classic series that's as large or larger, but probably not as hospitable), and several other ships were hit by wreakage.Sabastian Tombs wrote:I think that 39,000+ population only referred to New Caprica City. Heh, sweet vindication. I knew watching those teasers was a bad idea.

I loved it. Absolutely loved it. The amount of "Oh my gods, that didn't just happen" moments broke a record for one episode or movie.CaptJodan wrote:I think it'll take me a bit to process this one. This I cannot deny, but mind you that he was a willing participant in that torture. He demonstrated quite clearly he could have broken his restraints and killed Starbuck at anytime.StarshipTitanic wrote:Of course, she is the one who tortured him.

What an incredible finale.
My favorite scene was when Adama was telling Roslin that the election couldn't stand, even though having Baltar be President was the worst possible outcome. That was some of the best acting I've ever seen on television or in the movies. As I was watching Adama and Roslin's dialogue, I kept thinking to myself that these two really know how to fucking act.
When I first saw the "One year later" after Baltar was elected, I kept waiting for the bad dream sequence to end, but it never did. Frankly, what's happened isn't a bad dream, it's a nightmare. Humanity is now reduced to living in one huge tent city.
I feel sorry for Baltar. His character was always deliciously self-centered, who was naughty yet somehow sympathetic at the same time. Now he's just a lonely man, and this was hammered home in the one shot of him in his presidential seat with noone in attendance; he was all alone in his office. I wonder what the writers have in store for his character.
As for the Cylons showing up, I'm sure there'll be a battle when Galactica and Pegasus show up again, and the colonists will once again be on the run, in search of Earth.
I can't wait for October to come.

1. They should make all nBSG episodes 90 minutes. Every week, it just seems that the show is too short.
2. Once they started the "one year later" thing, I figured they were going to roll through the main characters. For the most part they did. They skipped Boomer and Helo (well the prison Boomer)............I just happen to be a big fan of Grace Park.
3. Anyone know what number 'AL' is? I assumed that since he is "older" that he would be either 1 or 2.
4.I don't mind a lot of 'Low Teching', but paper tickets and Padlocks? I know it pushes the whole 'fixed election' because it gives the viewer something tangible. Yet all those ships are packed with people, where do people VOTE at. I guess I am getting tired of everything under the sun being Low Tech.
And Yet....And Yet...I just can not WAIT for the next season!
