Those are the worst dubs I've ever heard. Everybody's screaming about the M'cross or something. It takes a pretty epic dub track to make machine guns fire 'zerp zerp zoop' noises.

Even Robotech is way the hell better than that... thing.

In this order:
DYRL
Plus (Movie probably)
Original Series (about 26 episodes of em. Screw the rest.)
Zero (for Eyecandy, ignoring alienbirdfishlogs)

The rest? Pretend it never existed and you'll be fine. Or else you will have to listen to Basra's song, a fate worse than death.

That was actually visible in the first episode as well, just as a background detail.

ADV <3 5.1 dub tracks. They did the same thing with Megazone 23. In fact, they had the same weird mentality when it came to dubbing Megazone 23 in that they had a REALLY GREAT IDEA to make the dub unique and that was adding in random 80's phrases to give it that authentic feel. Of course they messed it up and used mostly early 90's slang and even over dubbed some scenes with their new dialog. Similarly, their REALLY GREAT IDEA for Macross was to bring back Mari Iijima to voice Minmay again. Nevermind the fact if she is a lot older and while she is fluent in English, she can't exactly match a native speaker in terms of acting. I guess when your dubs are totally bland, you need to spice them up somehow.

I never knew it was this bad.

Macross is hard to bring into the modern world sound wise. The whole thing was recorded in mono way back in 1982.

If only you could somehow sig that. Hikaru's delivery is just so damn off. "Once you're dead, there's no do-overs!" No shit! "Everyone don't die, 'kay?" Hikaru, the mid western mom! "Ok everyone, don't forget your missiles and lasers, kay? Thanks."

Its ashame, because the VA that did english Hikaru actually does an amazing job as Edward Elric in Full Metal Alchemist, its not like he can't act. It seems more like a combination of bad directing and bad scripting I'd say.

Finally saw Macross Zero. Pretty good stuff! A little crazy towards the end, but hey -- J-Pop saves the universe is the point of the original Macross. ;)

Also caught the first episode of Macross Frontier. I like what I'm seeing so far.

The second episode kept my interest. After what little I saw of M7, I had lost just about all hope for the future of the franchise (HOW many episodes and OVAs did this get?) but Frontier seems to be back on track.

Also, the cutest love triangle in the franchise seems to be taking root. 8)

In it's defence, Macross 7 does get better, it just takes 10-15 episodes to start properly. And you never quite get over the desire to punch Basara repeatedly in the face for being a nob.

Yeah the first chunk of Macross 7 was pretty difficult to sit through, but it kind of grows on you the more you watch I found. Its not really untill the last 12 or so episodes are where it actually gets more *consistantly* good though. Its biggest problem I think is that its just so dragged out (49 episodes not including OVAs), the story and character development could have easily been better covered in 24-26 episodes tops and they probably woud have been able to spend more money on better art/animation quality had they done that as well.

With Macross Frontier I am VERY happy so far after two episodes. I really hope it keeps up like this. The characters, story, drama, music, mecha, battles, everything has come together nicely exactly as I was hoping for so far. I can't really think of any complaints yet or things I would have done differently with it (aside from prefering the "Deculture Edition" of episode 1 over the current broadcast edition).

Deculture is better for the 'splosions, but the broadcast one has that scene with Alto and Sheryl, which is rather important to the core relationship triangle for the series, and therefore really can't be missed out.

I agree with the importance of those scenes, I just prefer the pacing both visual and music wise of the Deculture version better, I find it to be the more watchable of the two, which is why I'm eagerly awaiting the "Yakku Deculture" edition as it will hopefully just be like Deculture but with the new Sheryl/Alto scenes. :)

Hehe I wouldnt expect most people too either. Its really more of a show for the hardcore fans I'd say. There is enjoyment to be had and it does expand the macross universe, it just does it in an annoying dragged out way. If you want to atleast read up on the story developments of it without having to watch it mahq.net has pretty detailed episode review/summaries of the whole show.

Out of curiosity, why is it called the 'deculture' edition?

To be fair though, most of the rest of the cast are quite likable, it's literally just Basara who's a cock, and it's unfortunate that he's the main character. Unlike, say, Macross Zero, where I wanted all of them to die horribly except Roy Fokker. (Fortunately, since the earth gets dusted in the original series, I get my way on that one).

A play on "Protoculture", and it's the name of Sheryl Nome's tour.

Deculture, a form of deculturate, is a real word, and means "to cause the loss or abandonment of culture or cultural characteristics." The ethnicity of anime characters tends to be deculturated, for example.

I guess I just don't see how it plays on protoculture, or why Sheryl's tour is called that.

Whilst it's possible that the meaning will be significant in some way, I'm betting that they just liked the sound, and the similarity to their made up aliens. This happens quite a lot with usage of English words in Japanese shows.

Yeah, they're very big on playing around with English words for stuff like that.

Hell, it's how they originally arrived at the name "Macross". (a bodge together of the Japanese pronunciation of "Macbeth" and the word "Macro", for how big the ship, designed for giants, is).

"Deculture" is a Zentradi word that means something to the effect of "impossible." You hear Zentradi saying it a lot in DYRL.

I want to see DYRL very badly, I have the OVA's of Plus and will get the movie when money allows and I have the ADV SDF:M series. Also Zero is very very pretty. I want to see 7 just to see how bad it is.
