just to make this evident, it's CYLON, they may speak as if they know greek, but the BSG writers never took a course in etymology.
BSG and an Omega would be pretty evenly matched, the omega's interceptors could keep the incoming fire power down to a minimum, and the Omega could still fire on the Galactica. The fighters could probably knock out the AA guns and effectively weaken the main weaponry with few problems as AA gunnary is CRAP on Battlestars, in the "Towering inferno" plot grab episode, can't remember the name, the cylon fighters got past ALL defense guns and destroyed the launch bays, and crippled the bridge. Though how the lauchbays were on fire makes no sense, unless they were being fed by SPACE air!
As for shields, knock out a few major ship systems through precise targetting and those go down fast, for example, dfm the bridge and the Galactica loses intelligent support from the commander and the command staff. In fact, use dfms en masse and you can kill enough of the ship to knock it down. The omega itself is pretty evenly matched with the BSG, and enough high power shots from the main batteries and beam cannons and the shields will probably not be an issue, though we never find out in the series what the shields can take, but it is within the range of having two basestars suffer catastrophic reactor failure due to damage.

I'm not entirely sure the Omega's gun range is superior to the Battlestar's...there's insufficient evidence from either side at this point.SyntaxVorlon wrote:just to make this evident, it's CYLON, they may speak as if they know greek, but the BSG writers never took a course in etymology.

That would be the episode "Fire in Space." The entire attack was focused on allowing the explosive-laden Cylon ships to make their suicide run on the bridge and landing bays. If the armored shields had closed in time, the attack would have been less useful.
They seemed to do fairly well without Adama and Tigh during the rest of this episode. Even though Adama gave the final solution to the problem, it was a risky plan that was used only because other options had failed. Apollo and Athena show (by the end of the show) just as much command potential as Adama.Though how the lauchbays were on fire makes no sense, unless they were being fed by SPACE air![/qupte]Theory is an atmospheric force field. It fits what happens, just like the open docking bay on the Death Star.As for shields, knock out a few major ship systems through precise targetting and those go down fast, for example, dfm the bridge and the Galactica loses intelligent support from the commander and the command staff.
On a separate note, not only do Battlestars have FTL drive, but during BSG, the ship travels through multiple galaxies. In "The Long Patrol" they leave the Cyrannus Galaxy for a new one which "no human in this fleet has ever seen." The plot revolves around it being a new galaxy and the Cylons not realizing the Galactica has left the Cyrannus Galaxy.

If you watch that episode they keep losing power all over the ship. If they don't have enough power to keep lights and med equipment on, then where is the power for the launch bays coming from?
I don't know where you thought I was talking about gun range. Though the BSGs can't be that far as they require close combat before they try firing missles or pulsar cannons.
The fact that the armor shields weren't up in the first place is indicative of the incompetence of the BSG comm staff and the fact that a fighter could get close enough to the forward positioned bridge, which due to its placement should have the GREATEST armor and AA guns on the ship, shows how bad they were designed or how poor their targetting is.
100000 TJ or 1000000 interceptors can still rupture the fields or whatever holding the plasma together or if they are particles, deflect them in another direction. Those shots can't have much momentum, if so much energy has been used to make them.

The BSG is much larger and more solid than an Omega. A few hits to an Omega's rotating section hub and it will tear itself apart.

While we do not have a sheaf of figures already laid down on the weaponry of BSG, we can observe what transpired in the series episodes.
In "The Living Legend", the blasts from the Pegasus' missiles against the Cylon basestars are certainly not in the kiloton-range, or at most 1 or 2 kt. The blast effects of the Galactica's pulsars against the basestar she tackles in "The Hand Of God" are about as powerful as the missile impacts observed in "The Living Legend".
BTW, in answer to one posting, the Pegasus does employ her own pulsars in the attack on the two basestars prior to getting within point-blank range of the two enemy vessels. Also, in answer to another post, recall that Cain chooses to do this to eliminate utterly any possibility of either basestar being able to escape or knock down his missile salvos.
The two direct pieces of evidence that we have for the power of fightercraft weaponry derives from "The Lost Planet Of The Gods" and "The Living Legend" when Cylon Raiders and Colonial Vipers are attacking ground targets. The destruction wreaked in both strikes appears no more powerful than those of the typical bombload of a contemporary tactical attack plane. At a rough guess, equivalent to 100-500 kg. bombs.
In regards to the effectiveness of Cylon kamikaze attacks, the following must be pointed out:
In the BSG pilot, the Atlantia fell victin to a kamikaze strike after having already suffered considerable damage from sustained fighter attack which caught the ship's defenders totally flatfooted; as a result of the idiotic orders issued by President Adar to maintain a stand-down posture even as the attack force was approaching visual range. The Cylon craft which hit the landing bay of the presidential flagship was also firing weapons right up to the moment of impact on the deck, inflicting even further internal damage prior to the crash.
In "Fire In Space", the one Cylon Raider which impacted the bridge failed to breach the hull and only resulted in minor internal damage which injured Adama and several bridge personnel. The resulting confusion on the command deck disrupted defence coordination long enough for the second kamikaze strike to hit the Alpha landing bay. The simple solution of dropping the landing bay forcefield to depressurise the deck was not implemented because everybody was concerned about not killing Boxey, who was in a section which could not be isolated when the landing bay was exposed to space, and hence the crew spends the episode fooling around trying to put out the fires by other means (one of the reasons why I really really abhor the presence of cute kids on SF TV shows).
Cylon kamikazes strike both the Galactica and Pegasus in "The Living Legend" but fail to destroy the battlestars. All total, Cylon kamikazes are 1 for 4 in effectiveness in the series.

This remains to be seen. Just skimming over what you said, I'm not really optimistic.Patrick Degan wrote:While we do not have a sheaf of figures already laid down on the weaponry of BSG, we can observe what transpired in the series episodes.
So basically Pegasus Missiles < 2 kt warhead? Is this a rough guesstimate based on the "blast"? Or do we have some prior evidence to suggest the durability of a Base-star (or have we seen these same missiles used against a different target?)In "The Living Legend", the blasts from the Pegasus' missiles against the Cylon basestars are certainly not in the kiloton-range, or at most 1 or 2 kt. And what are we basing the comparison of missiles to pulsars on? The effects on the Base Star? (if so, then how did one establish the order of magnitude estimate for the missiles to begin with?)
I can buy that as a rough guesstimate. And this is probably a good lower limit on the bigger guns. The two direct pieces of evidence that we have for the power of fightercraft weaponry derives from "The Lost Planet Of The Gods" and "The Living Legend" when Cylon Raiders and Colonial Vipers are attacking ground targets. At this point, a very rough guesstimate. And as a point of information, "The Living Legend" is the only episode in which we see a battlestar's antiship missiles in action.Connor MacLeod wrote:So basically Pegasus Missiles < 2 kt warhead? I'm comparing evident blast effect upon the basestar's hulls in the two episodes. From the fact that the blasts do not obscure or engulf either basestar entirely, combined with the fact that it took multiple hits to compromise the structural integrity of both enemy vessels, we can infer sub-kiloton to very low kiloton magnitude. And what are we basing the comparison of missiles to pulsars on? The effects on the Base Star? (if so, then how did one establish the order of magnitude estimate for the missiles to begin with?)

It is difficult to calculate anything from Galactica, because it was so inconsistent. However, there are some benchmarks that can be set:
*The fighter complement of 3 Cylon basestars (900 fighters, 300 per basestar per "The Hand of God") was enough to level the inhabited surface of Caprica in a short time. Definitely less than a day. The entire planet was left in flames, per statements made by Galactica bridge crew. This is a more effective planetary attack than the 4 day bombardment by the Centauri in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," which was performed by 12 heavy cruisers using illegal mass drivers.
*Galactica (and the helpless civilian ships it was protecting) survived an attack by a force of similar numbers in "The Living Legend." Pegasus was not in the battle for a while, in hopes to surprise the Cylons.
*Viper pilots wear protective garments that allow them to withstand the acceleration forces they experience during combat (second episode, IIRC). No acceleration compensators. Thus, they have comparable performance to Starfuries, both being limited by the pilot's tolerance.
*Galactica shot down all the missiles (ICBMs) opposing countries were firing at each other on a planet they were orbiting. This took only minutes.
These benchmarks do point toward technological superiority on the Colonials' side. Since 3 Cylon basestars carry enough firepower to bombard a planet more effectively than a dozen Centauri battlecruisers, it is logical to assume that they are at least comparable in terms of military strength. This can be considered an all-out bombardment by both sides, and the Cylons did it faster and more thoroughly.
The Cylons and Colonials must be roughly comparable, before the final battle, in terms of military strength, because the war had lasted for 1000 yahrns (sp?) (Apollo's statement in the pilot).
Basestars carry 300 fighters apiece ("The Hand of God"), have 100 defensive turrets, and at least 2 heavy weapons. Galactica and her depleted fighter squadrons defeated a Basestar and its complement of fighters in "The Hand of God." This is a third of the firepower used to level Caprica, and Galactica prevailed.
Who would win a battle bewteen an Omega and a battlestar is hard to answer. But the evidence indicates that battlstars are a bit more capable than Omegas.
