The other question is the possibility of survival.

Sure, the splicers are strong and have guns, but are uncoordinated and the vending machines giving tonics, plasmids, weapons, guns were left lying around.

Remember how you could find a bunch of stuff out just by picking up the voice tapes that were left carelessly lying around?

Ideal situation would be to find the most outlying and disconnected section of Rapture and bring stuff up from it. With any luck, it would have a Gatherer's Garden and other stuff that could be brought up for study.

And there is Tenanbaum. What she cares about most, is getting the little sisters cured and out. If a rescue operation could be launched with her, she could shed light on how the plasmids work. Although, I think she wouldn't want to do that: she would see the mistakes made again.

Neither would Fountain for that matter: he's too egoistic to even consider the idea.

But it all comes down to how long until they discover the seaslugs and the ADAM-producing plants, and how long will it take to take samples and figure out how to breed them. If a few lone scientists were able to discover its use and later learn how to utilize it, a proper research department surely will too.
Hopefully, the side-effects of ADAM will also be discovered.

That, and there is the issue of the Little Sisters with the Big Daddies. I wonder what course of action would be done with them.
Credo!

Deprograming the little sisters would take years, the big daddies will be shot out of hand. They are too dangerous to any rescue/research team that might interact with the little sisters.

The Big problem is Ryan. If Ryan feels that he is losing control of HIS city then he posses a self-destruct system to destroy Rapture. It might be possible to talk him down but not likely.

The splicers will be treated like the dangerous drug addicts they are. Those who are hostile (around 90%) will be killed. The rest will be jailed and forced to go cold turkey. Hey it's the 50s they didn't do drug rehab well back then.

On the Surface side, look for the FBI to begin massive investigations into various marine companies, banks, and other industries. Rapture could not have been built without massive investment and support from the land side.

Eventual fallout will be the development of a new facet to the cold war. The US will research plasmids to have an advantage over the soviets while the soviets will eventually be able to steal the research and begin their own crash research program. Eventually both sides come to some kind of agreement but look for both the CIA and the KGB to research the spying and intelligence gathering plasmids to the nth degree.

On the commercial side plasmids begin to seep into the public market in twenty or so years. While they are relatively harmless at first. Compatition combined with poor safety standards in some products quickly increases the damage they can do. Eventually the governments will try to regulate and then ban development of plasmids. Look for the growth of black markets around the development and sale of plasmids and the Addam needed to fuel them.

If you followed the Viral marketing campaign, you learn a lot more. It was possible for one determined man to find out where Rapture was located, but he had to look in the kind of publications that talk about things like magic bullets forged by the Illuminati or the psychic powers of the Loch Ness Monster.

Also, there is a heavily censored report from the ONI on that website, implying that Andrew Ryan worked out some deal securing the region as a No Go Zone.

The US Navy in the 1940s and 50s had a salvage, repair and field construction capability that no navy has matched since, and developed a lot of the worlds deep sea diving equipment along the way. They can weld or bolt on a new airlock chamber at any point they want for access. Diver planted explosive charges could be used to flood any trouble spots of resistance, without causing complete destruction. This would not be anything more brutal then what US countless troops fought on Pacific Islands. The place can’t be all that deep, or else all the places we saw leaking would have flooded real quick and under high pressure.

According to Google Earth, the location of Rapture is 2km beneath the ocean's surface. Assuming the Lighthouse Bathysphere travels at a steady speed, the city is closer to 300 meters deep.

The city isn't in complete darkness- the second value is correct.

The only problem I see is that the place is about to implode on it's self at any time. Can we exile Rand there?

The city is also covered in lights. Of course it isn't going to be in complete darkness.

The city may be covered in lights, but it has a very large quantity of light filtering down from above. Also, the rapid descents and ascents seen in noteworthy in-game cutscenes, the presence of fish that rarely venture far out of the daylit zone, and the abundance of coral and plants tend to imply that Rapture only lies a few hundred meters down, tops.

Doesn't Ryan mention American and KGB secret agents have tried to get into Rapture before pretty early on, when you first arrive? That'd sort of imply the governments are already well aware of Rapture.

He's worried that the CIA or KGB would find Rapture, but we see no indication anyone in an important position really knows where it is.
