A few silly ideas that came to me: -

I was sort of expecting the Scavengers imaginary Frend to be a cloaked 'classic' predator.

I had the wierd idea that the two types of predator were different genders and that being chained to a rock for 3 days while bits of alien are placed around you is considered a 'good date' for their species :D, this led me to the even stranger idea that when the two of them were hissing at each other I expected them to kiss (and spend about half an hour seporating their mouth parts again). That chain of resoning ended when the smaller predator got decapitated which can probably be considered beyond rough foreplay for almost any species :) .

Well maybe that is how they determine a worthy mate. If it strong enough to beat the larger gender, they mate. If not, well you saw what happened. :luv:

One would have expected a bit of disbelief or something but they just take it in stride without comment. The male lead giving the spiel seems more like an excuse to 'explain' the situation to those that dont get it in the audience.
I actually didn't have a problem with this, particularly considering how that crowd is well conditioned and trained to deal not panicking. Sun hasn't moved in four hours. Compass goes nuts. Fucking alien planets in the sky. Yup, we're on another planet. That's tough. Time to deal with it.

Most of the time Hollywood would overdo the freaking out and "oh god I can't believe this" bullshit, as though it would also awe the audience. Refreshing, really.

I'm no entomologist, but iirc that doesn't apply to certain insects :D

Mantises can be that bad when mating, and outside of insects, you have various arachnids too.

Though technically isn't that generally post-coital rather than foreplay?

I was under the impression that mantises do that often in captivity, but that it was actually very rare in the wild.

Yeah, its a common mistake but if the audience knows something either before or at the same time the characters know it, its simply a source of frustration if the characters refuse to believe its true. Its not entertaining at all, the audience just throws their hands up and calls everyone in the movie a moron.

Liked it. But the plot wasn't as straightforward as the first Predator, and the cast wasn't as outright macho bullshit ridiculous as the first Predator, and the bitch-raper and the doctor were kinda eh. Morpheus was a wasted potential, man. But it was alright. Brody played the part well.

Saw it a second time today, loved it. All the chracters were pretty good and the fights were played out nicely. First time around I never expected the doctor turning out to be a serial killer as I also figured he was picked to be a healer/trap that the others could use as they see fit in order to make the hunt more interesting for the Preds. I did question the docs expert knowledge of the plant toxin, but I shrugged it off assuming he must have worked at a place that dealt with that sort of thing at some point.

The Yakuza guy sword fight was predictable, but I still thought it was cool, it was decently quick and played out reasonably. The first time I couldnt make out where the pred got him, but the second time I noticed, and if you look carefully you can see he has a long slice across his midsection, which is also where he gave his final blow to the pred as seen by how the corpse was bleeding out into the grass.

Also, to the people who rolleyes at the yakuza guy sword fight, atleast it was properly in character and I would even argue it was probably more realistic than having a Spetznaz armed and fighting with an american minigun as though it were normal for him. As fun as it is seeing someone wielding a minigun, I think it would have been better if they had him fighting with some sort of heavy russian weapon.... Oh well the director atleast gets props for picking a real russian actor for the roll I guess.

One thing I found odd was how low the Blood Pressure of the Predators must be. With all the decapitation and arm severing going on, there should be long arcs of blood going everywhere, instead we get tiny little spurts that don't go anywhere.

Maybe they just couldn't get it past the raters.

Maybe they reflexively vasoconstrict/tighten their blood vessels when injured to prevent blood loss.

Maybe it's a common flaw in Hollywood effects relating to decapitation in general. Even knicking the carotid will shoot blood metres into the air, let alone decapitating.

Um, no. Most movies, well at least Kill Bill, tend to have a lot of high-pressure decapitation bleedings.

So one film. One of the goriest films. I've seen plenty of horrors and sci-fi films that show practically zero realistic vascular action. Even Outlander had a guy with his head blasted off and we got a splurt or two barely covering several centimetres.

They just don't care, and realism would make it a LOT messier.

I noticed that the "wolves" seem to be less interested in taking trophies and the actual hunt, and much more interested in the kill itself, compared to the "dogs" (working off memory of Predator 1 & 2). All the times they would wound and just watch their prey die, seemed kinda sadistic to my eye. In the earlier movies the smaller "dog" predators seemed to stalk, then get a quick kill and take the trophy without dragging it out.

If this was intentional, as a way of contrasting the 2 types of predators (professional vs sadistic) I think it was well done.

I am willing to bet that the four we saw in this movie are not, in fact, the sum total of the Predator species.

no, chop off every thing but the brain stem is how you get the boys revved up and ready to fuck, in the shrew, mantis, and certain spider worlds.

When the predator vaporized Morpheus with one blast, the first thing I thought of was the Predator vs Terminator thread. New calcs!

It was a decent film. I was entertained, although sometimes that was more to do with some of the sillier dialogue or leaps in logic characters were making ("This WHOLE PLANET IS A GAME PRESERVE! I know because this small section of jungle seems to be"). The second I saw the Yakuza guy I turned to my buddy and whispered "I'm going to scream if he pulls a Katana at some point". Oh boy. Katana sword fight! Full back Tattoo! Honorable tough guy! Obviously he is of the Cliche Clan Yakuza. Also had to lol when the second the dogs show up everybody starts liberally spraying into the forest with gunfire, only to go "WE NEED TO CONSERVE AMMO", then turning around five minutes later and doing the exact same thing again. But whatever, that was the shit I was expecting coming into this movie.

I got some hot plasma caster action, and I guess that's all that counts.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Finally got around to seeing it,and woo, I liked it! :D That said, it felt a tad unfocused compared to the first two, and all the nods to the first in terms of scene (e.g. the waterfall) felt more like ripoffs than homages. Oh, and CG explosion from the claymores looked very overdone and fakey. Still, a nice package.

I'm surprised I'm apparently the only person who didn't like it.

Just about everything about it was inferior to the AvP movies (never mind "Predator" itself), from the mediocre acting (aside from Fishburne), to the combat sequences, to that laughably bad katana fight, and the way the whole ending sequence of events just dragged on and on.

No, this definitely got fairly positive reviews. Not glowing, but still positive. I'm a little queasy toward this kind of movie, so I'll probably see when I grow a pair, maybe on HBO next year or censored on cable 3 years from now.
