I've had an erection ever since someone told me there is a New Judge Dredd film. So I looked it up here on the board finally and whattaya know, you people do have a thread about it.

I loved the last movie, and I hope they do have stuff like the Kylie and Danii Minogue Block War.

Much as I'd love to see a new Dredd movie (and I did like the previous one), the news that Karl Urban is starring fills me with fear. Hopefully they don't butcher the story like in Doom.

Urban is apparently a fan of the comics, and the story, from what's been heard so far, sounds like a typical Dredd strip (bear in mind that this is a relatively low-budget thing)

And on that cue, here's some photos from the set.

So far, I like. They've certainly been reading the comics. :D

Some more pics. Apparently the Justice Department use 120 year-old Toyotas. :)

Eh, I can live with that. Looks like they're taking a Batman-Begins approach here. Plus they've got a tiny budget, so at least it's better than flying bikes.

Doesn't the original series share some writers and/or artists with WH40K, or am I thinking of Nemesis the Warlock? Either way, I've got mixed feelings on whether Nolan-esque grit would really work in that setting.

40K was definitely inspired at least partially by Nemesis. I do believe the odd 40k writer and artist has worked on Dredd, such as Abnett, who I think has done the odd Dredd strip or spinoff.

Abnett wrote a lot of stuff for 2000 A.D., though nowadays I think he's signed exclusively to Marvel for his comic work.

I'm also pretty sure there was quite a few Dredd (and other 2000 A.D.) writers and artists who did stuff for Warhammer Monthly back when that was still being published.

I liked the design of the movie. They got it right for the most part. I didn't like the story all that much and I didn't really like Stallone in the part. That he did most of the movie without his helmet on bugged me quite a bit.

Stallone is really only capable of acting like Stallone. If you like that style then his movies are great if you don't then you're shit out of luck. There are a lot of actors like that, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger (WTF why is Schwarzenegger in my iPhone's spell check but meritocracy not?) who really just play the same role in different settings. I agree he was a strange choice for Judge Dredd but I have trouble thinking of someone more apt at the time with equal celebrity status.

I like to disagree about Jet Li . While he been constantly typecast in wuxia films, his acting capability is such that he is able to act in both comedy or action/drama. He isn't a great actor but he isn't as moribound as Jason or Stallone.

Compare his Once upon a time in China series with the Shaolin monk series which displayed his ability to combine comedy and drama together. He isn't a good enough actor to pull off a wide range of roles but he isn't as typecast as Stratham or Stallone is.

Watch him struggle through Romeo Must Die and Cradle 2 The Grave (two GODDAMN MASTERPIECES). He still delivers the best acting in those films despite apparently having learnt his lines in Romeo Must Die phonetically.

BTW. I'm being totally serious. Those two movies are awesome. You can go fuck yourself if you think otherwise.

Sure, they're nothing on the Wong Fei Hung series, but in terms of post 2000 efforts in Hong Kong Action style stuff, it's some of the best.

Ten fucking points for General Schatten.

I liked the original Judge Dredd, although I hadn't read the books. It was so ridiculous that Stallone's acting style fed right into it. Costumes by Versace didn't hurt either.

Word. I've got both of those in DVD, and one of the film's biggest (non-kung fu related) strengths is that Jet Li is actually likeable and sympathetic. He's a good guy in a bad situation, who needs to punch a lot of bad dudes in order to make things right.

Also, no love for Kiss of The Dragon?

And here's the latest image. Helmet could be made to look tighter, but I guess that's for comfort's sake or the photo angle, and I like it overall.

I have to echo the complaints about his pauldrons. Where are they?

Actually, in the earlier comics the pauldrons were about that size--and is this is supposed to be about Dredds' early days or something that's appropriate.

Not enough chin... can't be Dredd without a chin big enough to fill up the space between the sides of that helmet!

It's not Dredd without the pauldrons.

So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.
