Wouldn't anyone in the movie want to take such intelligent apes alive first, so they can survive to claim the world when we actually do nuke each other? Maybe the movie's just about the setup for the intelligence and an exciting uprising that got put down but not exterminated.
Uh, no. I don't know about you but if I'm facing a charging pissed off human level intelligence ape I'm not going to put my hopes on tear gas and pepper spray which has proven to be ineffective on pissed off humans from time to time. The price for it not working is death. Would you be willing to pay?

Drop it from the air. I'm not being stupid, I know apes can be dangerous and destructive when riled, and that's without having their intelligence boosted. If I were on the ground I'd prefer a gun to pepper spray too. I'm just trying to picture some political and activist ramifications of this scenario, and how local law enforcement would actually respond to what I'm sure they were only told was a mass animal escape that needs to be contained pronto. So far this thread is leaning in the direction that such an uprising would be unsuccessful against our weaponry and aerial tactics. What do you think the nation's response would be to the LAPD if they gunned down a bunch of "helpless" escaped chimps and gorillas without attempting capture first? Can anyone here who's ever served on a PD comment on such? I know that most people will understand if those apes took some lives first, but there would always be the doubters in the animal rights groups and in Washington.

A bunch of "helpless" escaped chimps and gorillas.

The above is an oxymoron.

Also, no one on the ground is going to give a shit what PETA might say if there's an immediate risk to human life, which a pack of engraged apes clearly represents.

The nation would likely be outraged if the LAPD gunned down a bunch of helpless apes and chimps. However, rampaging animals are often killed by police. A bunch of apes and chimps rampaging through the streets attacking people would be gunned down without a second thought.

They shot that tiger in the zoo when he killed a guy, and that was AFTER he got caught.

Yes, and we also shot Tilikum--no wait, we let him back into the wild after two (or three) incidents. No, wait, he's still there. The rules of engagement are clearly not set in stone.

I'm confident that the police would be ordered to use (and be totally justified in the use of) deadly force to protect the public with any escaped zoo animal. I love how chimps top this list here:

I'm just wondering how the movie apes survive to begin their Planet of the Apes, because I can't see them making it past the police unless they've been caught. Guess I'll have to see the movie.

I'm sure it's been said already, but Chimps are endangered, Gorillas EXTREMELY so (at Extinction's Door), that trailer w/ a horde of them on a bridge is laughgable. The premise of them taking over the world is also. But I'll watch anyway.

Then consider, you have 6 billion humans, who even self-pwnd via nuke, will still have enough gumption to finish off our nearest kin, for trying to supplant us. Then feral dogs & FERAL pigs; millions of them. Hogzilla vs a Mr. Bubbles? My money is on the Hogzilla. Those monsters give me nightmares. In a war of attrition alone, the hogs have a huge advantage against primates in reproductive terms. Plus there's climate, Hogs can handle the US (desert, cold winters) better than chimps
