I'm going by what the creators of Smallville said in the second episode's commentary, in that they had to demonstrate how and why Kryptonite was dangerous to Clark, because a lot of people didn't know what the devil it was.
And while kryptonite is part of our culture, "Cookies are my Kryptonite.", a lot of people have never heard the term before and didn't know what it was. Hell, I've met people who didn't know Superman was an alien.
Possible Doctor Who feature film?

That's probably because him being an alien is largely irrelevant to most of his stories. And if it's irrelevant.. who cares?
Under the structure of drama, anything that is important later on is foreshadowed or mentioned earlier anyway. Stuff nerds like doesn't need scenes to itself (or even an entire start of a movie, as isn't uncommon) just to say 'later on there will be lasers' and 'the box also DISAPPEARS'. Basically, since the way the story would work without the trademark works just as well with it, no 'lore' needs to be inserted to 'improve' it... unless your aim is to sell the IP rather than making a good film, which is usually the case.

What is an IP?
Like I said, take the third option and adapt the source material into whatever you want it to be. For instance, take Spielberg's stance on what he wanted to do for Harry Potter.

Different vision, not steeped in the Harry Potter lore, so that should have been the better interpretation for the film series to go, right?Although Steven Spielberg initially negotiated to direct the first film, he declined the offer.[11] Spielberg wanted the adaptation to be an animated film, with American actor Haley Joel Osment to provide Harry Potter's voice.
Re: Possible Doctor Who feature film?
Why do you need to 'adapt' anything when you can just not bang on about nerd trivia and still have the movie work? Why do you think explaining a series of factettes that may not be relevant to the plot is so important? Is the movie about telling a cool story, or about advertising Doctor DW Who trivia?
Frankly your bizarre HP example is great because their first movie (which is heavily into exposition and slow as hell) sold it by making it a wonderous situation the audience learns about as the characters do ... just like regular, non-licenced drama. :V

So, it's all right to have an infodump with characters being told about how the world works? I'm honestly a bit confused on what you're saying here. I'm asking if it should try and stay true to the source material or adapt as needed and cut and trim whatever is dramatically inconvenient?
Again, what's an IP? What's a beardo?

Re: Possible Doctor Who feature film?
Why do you think 'including extraenous trivia' is 'being true'? Doctor DW Who has a time travelling box in it regardless if you spend an hour talking about it or two seconds; neither approach is more or less 'true'. One is just less boring or self-indulgent.
Regardless, your fascinating inability to grasp concepts related to non-licenced fiction isn't what the thread is about. We should go back to talking about what tired plot to recycle or whether deliberate steps should be taken to annoy the series writers with CANON EVENTZ.
