I don't know that much about old series companions, so I'm not sure who I'd like to see. The most beloved seem to be Sarah Jane and the Brigadire, who have already been mentioned and sadly can't return. Romana's probably out unless they bring back the Time Lords somehow. Some of the actors are no doubt dead. Of those who can return, from what little I've seen and heard about her, Ace sounds kind of interesting.

New series companions: Donna and Rose have both been effectively written out of the series, and should stay gone. I'd be cool with Rory and Amy, Jack, Martha, or Wilfred Mott. Or the Doctor's daughter, though she didn't stick around long enough to attain companion status.

Those are my nominees, anyway.

I still say they ought to revisit Susan. Maybe the Doctor used the chameleon arch on her at some point so she could hide from the Timelords and wouldn't outlive everyone she knows. Then he accidentally finds her again as she is on her death bed, and he is forced to choose between letting her brief but normal life end or save her while destroying the life she's built.

Rather big list of Doctor Who Companions Here:

My personal favourite would have to be Ace:
Ace & Mel
Ace Vs. Cybermen
Ace Vs. Dalek

Not seen many pictures of her lately but she certainly looks more or less the same. Additionally, she is supposedly still kicking around since Sarah Jane mentioned her along with a few of the other companions.

Nyssa - Sarah Sutton
Leela - Louise Jameson
Sgt, Benton - John Levene

Since you cant get Stewart back... Benton is the closest thing left to someone in UNIT from WAAAAAY back in the Doctors history.
They already brought Jo Grant back from that time period so she can appear as well.

The alternative to UNIT would be the OTHER Brigadier encountered by 7th in Battlefied
Brigadier Winifred Bambera - Angela Bruce

The list of companions is certainly massive and plenty of them are still kicking around in one form or another. However, wether they can appear, look the part and Doctor Who goes to the effort of getting them would be the major hurdle. Journey's End was a massive shit fest of cameo appearances mashed together and then promptly wrecked with a bullshit outcome. I have no desire to see that kind of garbage pulled again.

It would be a pretty big given they wont be able to fit a fraction of this into a single episode or even a two-parter so I would expect they will gloss over it with backscene references, perhaps an image montage and then skip over to new-series stuff.

Who's Olivia?
Offspring of David Tennant and Georgia Moffett, daughter of Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor. Which makes Olivia not only the "Doctor's daughter", but also the granddaughter of the Doctor.

Which is why I think they should have named her "Susan".

Ah, I didn't know they were together, let alone had a kid. I still maintain that having Jenny re-appear would be so awesome, especialy as they clearly wrote the episode to allow future appearances.

I wouldn't mind some of the old actors back playing different characters. A lot of classic Who parts had actors who starred on other Who serials. Jacqueline Hill who played Barbara during Hartnell's reign also appeared in the Tom Baker story Meglos. It would be a nice kudos to those who have gone before without degenerating into too much fan wank.

They should bring the Time Lords back, period, as they should have done with the opportunity raised by the End of Time. It's the only way they'll be able to do regular Dalek stories without raising the question of why they aren't easily dominating the rest of the universe, given that it was clearly only the Time Lords keeping them in check pre-War. Using Maxil as part of that story would simply be the icing on the cake.

Maxil will obviously have to have regenerated. :D Having an old Colin Baker revisiting his old role just doesn't have that sinister look compared to when he shot Peter Davison's Doctor in the "Arc of Infinity."

That unfortunately got short-circuited by RTD insisting upon rendering the Doctor as The Most Wonderful Man In The Universe™, and the only way to justify such a Wonderful Man having to commit genocide upon his own people was to depict them as having turned as evil as the Daleks, so there was no way The Most Wonderful Man In The Universe™ could risk unleashing his own evil people back upon the cosmos —especially as they were planning to erase it all. Thus, we don't get to have the Time Lords or Rassilon or his crazy witch or the Weeping Time Ladies back. Thanks, RTD.

The biggest problem with bringing back the Time Lords is not that they're evil (I'm sure the Doctor could set up a coup against Rassilon and get one of the few decent ones made President), but rather the hordes of monsters created in the Time War that will all appear if the Time Lock is broken.

Nah, you just have a multi episode story starring all the companions still alive where the Doctor deals with these monsters. :D Or they could just have the Doctor stop it without excessive crossovers and fan wank.

That's a problem any Time Lord's script editor can deal with at the keyboard.

Presumably they would write these re-apearing Time Lords as a splinter faction trying to escape or somesuch. Anything to avoid the "we'll win by killing everything" approach.

My personal opinion is that they HAVE!! to include Tom Baker in the anniversary special simply because the man is awesome.
And i base my opinion solely on this youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ7uHzZYREo
Putting him in any dr who episodes would be comedy gold

This is the quote I got from DW's official FB page,
Steven Moffat announces "The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series. Then the Doctor will meet a new friend"
So it is official that Amy and Rory will be dumped for another companion.

Doctor Who has its own FaceBook page? I thought only real people were allowed those.

Yeah, yeah, I know - I'm probably the last person in the first world who is NOT on FB....

I will miss Rory. I do hope the next companion is good.

Though we'll evidently see the Ponds at least once more. :)

All I can say is that hopefully the Ponds also refers to River now...

Not necessarily. River was introduced way before the Ponds came to the scene. So there is always a chance that she'll make another appearance.

Bring him back as a bad guy. Most of the current audience won't recognize him anyway, and I bet he could be a delicious supervillain with that voice and smile of his.

Based on my own anecdotal perspective of friends who follow the show, making him TMWMITU does seem to have paid off in terms of viewer devotion. I read about how Mr. Spock had a following in the 60s and I kind of get the same vibe from the people who squee out over The Doctor.

Before becoming the Doctor, Tom Baker played the villain in one of the Sinbad movies, which I saw a few years ago. I think it was the Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and he was certainly quite good at being a villain.
