Re: Prometheus Trailer
I'm basing it on that guy's spoilerized post. And finding out about them will have that effect, so the movie would be best served not going there, girl.

Re: Prometheus Trailer
Interesting point of note for those complaining about the Inception style heavy strings in the trailer. I went back and watched the original Alien again and similar instrumentation was used in the score there, so it seems that at least partially that is simply another throwback to the original movie. Watching the original movie also seems to reinforce the idea that a significant part of Prometheus will take place on LV-426, since the terrain looks somewhat similar. Actually, what is interesting is the fact that the world was described by Captain Dallas of the Nostromo as 'almost primordial'. Perhaps the human explorers will disturb a Space Jockey xenoforming project?
Also, if I had to make a bet from what I have heard, the last shot in the movie will be the camera panning down and we will see a single, solitary xenomorph egg.

Why would an interstellar civilisation have more than one of the same ship?
Re: Prometheus Trailer
I'm just going off the leaked script that the same source who originally leaked the real trailer released, which seems to lend it some weight but sure, could be foilers.Stark wrote:Where the fuck do you get that? Scientists on a planet, ship explodes and crashes.

That just happens to crash on a world with a very familiar landscape in a position very similar to the one we saw previously? I think it's fair to assume they are one and the same. We'll see!JointStrikeFighter wrote:Why would an interstellar civilisation have more than one of the same ship?
Re: Prometheus Trailer
Well that was brief.
Certainly managed to whet the appetite, but the problem that I foresee with this movie, based on the information present in this thread, is that it would explore the history of yet another bipedal, humanoid race. And the bastard-offshoot Predator VS Alien franchise was quite enough in that regard.
Giger is great and all, but most of his artwork consists out of perverting the human form. I want to see something Lovecraftian, and not something that will undoubtedly sport two eyes, and the familiar simian extremities. This is science fiction horror after all, and not Star Trek.

The premise of the trailer is something I should be stoked by but somehow it just makes me feel more resigned to the movie being a pointless exercise in needless film-making.phongn wrote:TED video with Peter Weyland
As a general rule I dislike the idea of prequels. You're locked into a known future. How is that different from watching historical dramas? Hard to put into words but prequels tend to universally suck while historical dramas at least have as good of odds as Sturgeon's Law allows for.
Overall it's just updating the bleak and frightening dystopian auditorium from the Apple ad and putting a creepy, menacing Ayn Rand superhero with a creepy British accent on a stage for some monologuing time. One of the comments summed it up. It's pretty much something we've seen a zillion times before. If they're advertising a shitty CGI talking animal comedy the announcer will go derpy derp derp derp deerp derp deeeeeeeerp derp and the animal will put on sunglasses and there will be a medley of allegedly humorous shtick all set to "Get Ready for This" by 2 Unlimited. If it's pretty much every other movie it's a bunch of scenes that do that fucking annoying pop up and quick fade to black with lots of screaming and explosions and one final thing to jump at the camera before the next trailer.
Would love to be surprised by a movie that knocks my socks off but I'm not holding out any hope. Prove me wrong!

It's scary how this stuff predates anime.

Agreed. I love the Aliens films and I'll give this one a chance, but one of the things I liked best about this franchise was the fear of the unknown.Jesus Christ. Finding how the xenomorphs are made is just going to ruin them for ever. Scott, please don't hit menopause like James Cameron.
Yes, I know there's a ton of EU stuff for Aliens out there, but when one of my friends in college told me Aliens hunt by seeing your soul and you can hide from them by thinking really hard I laughed in his face and resolved never ever to read any of it.

Re: Prometheus Trailer
To be honest, the Xenos lost their unknown/fear factor a long time ago, no thanks to poor additions to the franchise like Resurrection and AVP. Ridley says that whilst this film lays the foundations for what we eventually see in Alien, there will be no Xeno in it.

Re: Prometheus Trailer
The problem with any cool monster or setting is that they eventually get over-exposed. Your typical slasher protagonist is usually scary in the first movie, possibly still scary in the second, and self-parody in movies 3 through 11. Pinhead and the Cenobites were really cool when you knew little about them. Frankly I'm not even sure Clive Barker could have fleshed them out without ruining them and the people involved with the sequels and comics and other spin-offs ain't up to his standard.
Matrix suffered from this problem in another way. The first movie's cool factor was in wrapping your brain around the world being presented and going "whoa." The sequels lacked the whoa factor, not to mention bogging themselves down with a bunch of pseudo-philosophy and murky character motivations.
Aliens and Predator have been run into the ground. There is such an idea as exhausting all of the possible stories left to tell with a setting. That doesn't mean producers won't keep paying for more movies but it at least helps you avoid building any sort of positive expectation.

Clearly, it is not even close to being the same being, let alone the same chair.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Re: Prometheus Trailer
There are some slight differences between those images sure, probably due to the 33 years between each production, but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose- the timeline on the official viral weyland site establishes that this is all set in the same continuity as alien and that a mission to LV-426, where the original derelict was found, is planned. Personally I believe this will end up as one and the same creature that is encountered in the derelict in Alien, and the differences are just going to have to be attributed to retcon and production.Havok wrote:Clearly, it is not even close to being the same being, let alone the same chair.

I'm pretty sure that the film will tie into the first Alien, visual differences notwithstanding, but viral promotion sites often have a history of not jibing with the facts presented in the film.

It's going to be fun seeing the fans trying to retcon how the future looks less advanced than the past by the time you get the first film. I know, it's silicon-punk.
Re: Prometheus Trailer
Why would they even do this? The limitations back in the 70s would have prevented the replication of a quite-advanced future.jollyreaper wrote:It's going to be fun seeing the fans trying to retcon how the future looks less advanced than the past by the time you get the first film. I'm talking fans. There's never anything too ridiculous to preclude a retcon.
