Some out of the top of my head
The Naboo starfighter. Very sleek and I really like the retro design
The X-wing. While not as beautiful as the one above, it has the looks as something that can take on the Empire on its own.
Tin Tin's Moon Rocket. Simply iconic.
The Romulan D'deridex

I also rather like the D'deridex. It looks so powerful and menacing and mysterious.

Re: Just Plain Beautiful Spaceships
Omega class starfury from babylon 5, I always liked the X wing, but the Starfury as a slightly more rugged design.
While we're talking B 5 there's of course
I am a huge fan of the Sovereign class design in star trek, though I like the constitution refit as well. I will second the nBSG Pegasus and add
Mk VII viper
and last but least Fuzzy's Enterprise, which i still say should have won.

The saucer looks okay on that, but the aft section looks strange at times. No worse than the Sovereign-like ship with a mutilated neck they ended up going with, though. And it does have a sort of dangerous, elegant look to it.

Now Foss is classy.
One reason I listed him as an example of a possible type of just plain beautiful ship in the OP.

Thanks to Victory of the Daleks, the best-looking military aeroplane ever built also counts as a spaceship:
Failing that, the Earth Alliance Hyperion-class heavy cruiser:
or the chromed Naboo Royal Yachts and the works of Chris Foss mentioned earlier.
The Kushan mothership from Homeworld is also rather lovely, too.

I'll add the USSS Discovery from 2001/2010. Long, graceful, elegant.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."
Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Ever read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics? We humans are excellent pattern matchers and incredibly vain. We see our faces everywhere we look. And our penises.

The light in the window gallery is the wrong colour but yeah, that was my first thought too.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

No ship can ever quite compare in fanciful wonder as with the TARDIS:

This thread, predictably, turned into "my favorite ship".
Half of the crap posted is not only not beautiful, but they are down right ugly. Some of them are basically two shapes connected together.

The Coronet from the Clone Wars cartoon, it's meant to be decadent and beautiful, and it shows.

I think the spaceship from The Fountain is beautiful. Style over substance for the win.
I also think the SOL from Perry Rhodan looks good.

I like it how the OP explicitly disqualifies the an ugly fat little thing like the Serenity from the running - and yet its posted here anywaySome one that knows the difference between "OH MY FAVORITE" and an atheistically pleasing design.

Re: Just Plain Beautiful Spaceships
The way I figured it, Serenity and ships like her have the other thread. But Serenity's aesthetic appeal comes from... the lack of any deliberate effort to make her appealing.Vympel wrote:I like it how the OP explicitly disqualifies the an ugly fat little thing like the Serenity from the running - and yet its posted here anywayHavok wrote:Some one that knows the difference between "OH MY FAVORITE" and an atheistically pleasing design.
The other thread was all about "endearingly ugly" ships, and had plenty of them. So I was wondering, what about ships that just plain look good, and are not "endearingly ugly?"
There are a lot of "atheistically pleasing design" ideas out there- you can take the chrome-rocketship Golden Age look, or the multicolored Chris Foss things that look like space insects that Shroom was pointing to, or a bunch of other options. But yes, I was hoping that people would avoid just saying "my favorite ship," and possibly that we might see discussion of aesthetics. What do people like in ship design, in terms of appearance? Geometric simplicity, or complexity? Straight lines or curves? All the ship's functions integrated into the hull, or a modular appearance with things like engine nacelles?
Do you actually consider a 1960s British police box to be the gold standard of architectural beauty? For that matter, does lordofchange? Or was he just missing the point with "my favorite ships?"Crazedwraith wrote:It's almost as if some people have different standards of beauty than others.
