They're from Iain M. Banks' book Against a Dark Background. The last remaining one (of six) is the macguffin of the plot. They are quasi-sentient weapons which, as noted, will destroy pretty much anything they are pointed at, somehow. The laws of physics don't seem to bother them all that much, but they do show an appreciation for dramatic irony. (Fire a Lazy Gun at a person who once escaped death by firing squad and he'll be riddled with bullets, for instance). As the targets get larger, they tend to lose interest and just dump an appropriately large amount of energy into the target.Ahriman238 wrote:I don't believe I've ever heard of this 'Lazy gun.' Yep.
Rassilon made it (or at least took credit for making it) then realised what he had. He then disassembled it into three or so different sections and hid them, so that no-one could abuse it's power. The Fourth Doctor was (IIRC) the first to reassemble it again since that time.

I'd like to point towards the Mass Effect guns. First mass effect obviously.
The ability to have effectively infinite ammo is pretty nifty. The only limitation is that of heat.

I have to second this, I'm afraid. The thing can punch through concrete and the power cells can be recharged by throwing them into a campfire. Definitely something that any space adventurer(tm) might appreciate, depending on their universe.40K Imperial Guard Lasgun ?

+1 for phasers
I don't particularly like the aesthetic of the TNG version, but the TOS phasers were boss (both the show and the various props from the movies). Plus the utility is great.

That sniper rifle with the built-in transporter on DS9 was pretty cool for a sniping weapon.
As for infantry weapons? I don't really have much experience with the various weapons in sci-fi universes.
Imperial lasguns have been mentioned. I'm given to understand that they are mass-produced stuff and need large numbers of troops carrying them to take out the bigger threats. Meanwhile Space Marines and elite troops get better weapons that are more expensive.
The rivet gun from Bioshock 2 is neat, fires rivets like bullets but with the ability to fire trap rivets which can themselves fire into an enemy that stumbles across them. Might not be the best weapon, but the ability easily lay traps all over the place could make for some nasty gorilla warfare.
Command and Conquer: Generals has the Minigunner infantry unit who is a chinese soldier with a minigun able to shoot airplanes out of the sky. They are probably my favorite infantry unit in that game. I dub them sci-fi weapons because they have unlimited ammo.
And if we're allowing stuff like the Point of View gun, I'll just go ahead and suggest the Medi-gun used in Team Fortress 2. Equip your regular troops with whatever you want but with a few medics on hand who can heal them with medi-guns, it would make any combat zone much more survivable.

Fry: No! They did it! They blew it up! And then the apes blew up their society too. How could this happen? And then the birds took over and ruined their society. And then the cows. And then... I don't know, is that a slug, maybe? Noooo!

well the point about the TASP is that via stimulating the pleasure centers of the brain, which can turn a berzerker, sociopath or even an 800 pound charging Kzinti into a more manageable situation without causing much perminate damage...

Ill probably get chased for this, what about The Samaritan (À la Hellboy) It's custom built out of holy metals and such, oversized rounds that punch through most materials. Though it only holds 4 rounds and is pretty bulky.
Failing that, the M-920 Cain form Mass Effect 2, it lobs a 25g slug at considerable speed creating a nice area effect, despite this it has a low ammo capacity.

The 40K lasgun as the AK47 of the future. Hell, if you're desperate for ammo you can even recharge the batteries by putting them in a fire.

Re: Best Sci-Fi gun
I have a certain fondness for the PPK12 Gauss Pistol. With the proper build (10 Agility and 10 Luck, two ranks of Action Boy, Better Criticals, Bonus Rate of Fire, and Sniper), that equals six shots per combat round, which typically equals six dead baddies in a round. The only downside is relatively low ammo capacity of only twelve rounds. Still, I will typically kill everything by the time I run out of ammo, so it's not that big a deal.
