I'm wondering if this is a dream sequence, something about Iron man forcing Tony and Pepper apart?

And the defining sci-fi series of this site includes monks with magical powers that can see the future and shoot lightning. *shrug* While the universe around Iron Man includes many fantasy elements, for the most part the IM series has not included any fantastical characters or powers. So the movies could be classed sci-fi.

The Star Wars setting is definitively Sci-Fi, while the Marvel Universe is not. Not to say that there is not strong science-fiction defining elements in comics, but there is much more fantasy elements in comics than Star Wars, by fucking miles.

I think superhero comics have their own sub/related genre that has been mostly recognized as separate from both fantasy and science-fiction.

Geez, it does look like that. Considering the Mandarin should have been around much longer that Cap has been back (and assuming they don't make some weird Anti-Cap Hydra tie in) it's bound to be something else.

Honestly I hate all you motherfuckers. Instead of wowing about power armoured soldiers blowing things up and kicking ass there is a pedantic argument about the definitions of sci-fi and fantasy. You all suck.

That was going to be my next guess, the shots with Tony and the armor distinct are a trippy dream sequence showing his struggle over being both Tony Stark and Iron Man. It would be typical Hollywood to tease us with those images. I mean what do we see? Iron Man taking Pepper away from Tony, and Iron Man kicking Tony's ass. Very metaphorical, I'm sure.

Interview with the director said this would be an Extremis/Armor Wars mashup. Then again, they said IM2 would be Demon in a Bottle, so I'd expect them to be fairly liberal with the ideas involved.

They also said the Iron Patriot would be Eric Savin.

So I'll assume the part with Tony lying defeated in the snow and pulling off his faceplate is connected with the one of him dragging the armor through the snow. Other thoughts?

So on whose side is the power-armored guy/robot/whatever that grabs Pepper? I couldn't make much out in that scene.

Three slow-moving helicopters really shouldn't be a credible threat to a Starktech air defense system.

He lives on the coast of Malibu, there are many helicopters that fly around daily. He's probably used to news choppers looking for a good shot. Notice that all the heavy munitions are hidden inside the body of a normal-looking huey. I don't think he expected that.
This is likely exactly what happens. The helicopters were all painted up like news copters so they likely got in through any air defense zones.

See, In-Universe, this is a great marketing ploy by the Air Force as it capitalizes on the new found fame of Captain America. Also, in the political world, 'Iron Patriot' is going to come off much better than 'War Machine'. We'll see if they actually use a name at all though.
Still doesn't make it any less stupid for Rhodes to be running around in Iron Patriot armor. I'd be better if that was supposed to be Savan/Coldblood-7.

Having watched the trailer multiple times, it looks more like the Mark 47 is Tony's telepresence armor, not the Extremis or Bleeding Edge armors. You see Tony working with the armor and having that headgear on, its possible that he integrates some of that tech into himself and the armor can respond to his thoughts (or maybe it is an accidental discovery that prompts the "Does the suit make the man, or does the man make the suit?" question that they say Tony is dealing with). That scene with the gauntlet flying onto him seemed almost like he was testing whether it would work. With the scene in bed, it looked like Pepper was trying to wake Tony up (likely from one of his nightmares) and the suit reacted to "protect" Tony by stopping Pepper. In the scene with the destruction of his house, the suit similarly could have come to safeguard Tony.

Well it looks like Tony's new armor, but Tony is already in the frame, in bed with Pepper. There's also a shot of what I'm already going to call the Extremis Armor looming over Tony menacingly.

It's all part of the discussion over in sci-fi, you should join us there.

Since my hearing is all garbage, the armor with the patriotic paint job is War Machine? Or is it someone else?

Is it sad that I was thinking the same thing?

I was trying to read the symbols on Mandarin's rings to see if they match up to the comics. I know, I know... anal fanboy much? As it is, Hav, I think you hit the nail on the head with your idea that the armor is responding to his subconscious. If they bring in the Extremis angle the way they did in the comics, that idea would fit right in.

The progression to the telepresence armor makes sense. With the real world use of drones plus Stark getting very close to dying a few times in the movieverse I can see him going with the telepresence version for his own safety. He and his armor took a pretty good beating in the Avengers movie especially. They could even make the extremis part of the story as how Tony securely controls his teleprence armor.

I don't think the audio identifies it one way or the other, and since it's labeled FF Labs (and whatever does that stand for?) when War Machine was Stark Industries, I suspect it's somebody else's knockoff.

Stark might toy with the drone idea, but I'm not sure it's really where he'd go. He's too much of a fighter, even with the adrenaline-junkie aspect of his personality burned out by his experiences in New York.

Mk 47? I don't think they've gotten that far in the comics.

Huh, you think "ever since New York, nothing's been the same." is an Avengers reference? I honestly didn't think of that, even with it staring me in the face.

Well there's the part where Stark is exactly the same at the end of Avengers as he was at the beginning and as we saw in the Iron Man movies. He's very nearly killed (or so it seems anyway) to the point that he actually calls Pepper for an 'I'm almost certain I'm about to die so I thought I'd tell you I love you' phone chat that didn't happen, and what is the very first thing he does upon being revived by The Other Guy yelling at his chest piece? He quips about getting fast food.

That's probably the case, as the reactor circle was flickering off when the camera panned as he was lying there.

He just had a near death experience, people are seldom rational and Tony Stark less than most. I just almost died.... god I'm fucking hunger, are you hungry? I'm hungery, lets get some food while I sit squarely in denial.

Near death experiences supposedly make people change. Tony's left him exactly the same.

No, near death experiences put people into shock, people in shock don't act rationally. People in shock do many things, few of those things would make sense to a neutral observer. The city is in flames, aliens are dead, day is saved and Tony pulls them into the nearest wrap place to get some food, why? Because he just almost died and he's still in shock to some extent.

We have no examples of Tony's behaviour PAST shortly after his near-death experience so I'm granting you that for the moment.
