I hate all "organic-looking" ships. They're ridiculous Bezier curve-fit CGI showcases, not realistic-looking ships. Why would you make something smooth and sleek and organic IN THE VACUUM OF OUTER FUCKING SPACE?
My pick for coolest-looking sci-fi fighter ever is the X-Wing. The look of lethality with its four wing-tip guns, the big engines, the "weathered" look, and the proton torpedo tubes all add up to a seriously bad-ass ship.

For reasons of asthetics and national pride. Groups that use organic-looking and/or streamlined ships are showing off that their technology base is good enough (and their economies strong enough) to build functional spacecraft that look like works of art.Darth Wong wrote:I hate all "organic-looking" ships. Also, from a practical point of view, it's much less work to model a half-decent looking 'organic' ship than to model a decent looking flying brick with the greeble density most viewers expect. Compare the amount of hand modeling work necessary to build a White Star mesh with what's needed to make mesh of the Executor, for example. It goes without saying that production time is money.
It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

Although a little streamlining is ok, if nothing else for a dual space/atmospheric fighter
BTW, I've always been partial to the Missile Boat. Most of my fantasies revolve around it
I've found that I like most starfighter designs I've come across though...I guess starfighters are to me like what women are to me

A-wings definately. X-wings might be above for me except they look like the visiblity would be fairly poor. A-wings are much better in this regard, although I suppose it would be nice if they were more heavily armed.

TIE Interceptors look fucking awesome, however, for me I take the X-Wing fighter any damn day of the week. Unlike Doug Chiang I can truely appreciate the bad assedness of the little snubfighter that not once, but twice has laid waste/helped lay waste to the ultimate power in the universe. Ha, tachfighter my ass.

Kelly Antilles,
Anyway, here are other honourable mentions:
Dark Eldar Razorwing (40K)
Crossbow (Wing Commander 2, is it just me or does I have a fetish for double-hulled fighters??)
Jalthi-class Kilrathi Heavy Fighter (Wing Commander 1)
Centauri interceptor (B5)
and finally:
Naboo N-1 Fighter (SW1: TPM). It has some sort of "art deco" look that I really dig. Yes, I know that it is designed for airshows rather than combat.
Actually, the Federation has Peregrine-class combat shuttles, although they are relatively rare.Star Trek doesn't have starfighters

as I have stated before...
YF-19 Excalibur prototype 'Alpha One' from Macross Plus... it slices, dices, blends... can effectively engage almost anything in almost any environment ranging from ground to space depending on the weapons loadout... can take huge amounts of damage before mobility is imoaired, and can do hyperspace folds with optional disposable generator... an improved version could probably have a fold system permanently built in!
other contenders...
x-wing
a-wing
TIE Interceptor
B5 Starfury
B5 Thunderbolt
there are others, but i cant remember them right now

Yeah, the Gunstar... been a while since I saw that movie, but it was a cool fighter. The Peregrine from deep Space Nine is also cool and it has plenty of firepower like the Gunstar.Stravo wrote:I always thought that the Gunstar from The Last Strafighter was really cool, it was like a flying fortress and it just had a look that most sci fi fighters don't have.

I have to go with the Rapier, from Wing Commander 2. Long, sleek and menacing, bristling with guns and missiles. It LOOKS like the deadly (albeit slightly dated) machine of war that it is.

Bah. There is nothing cooler than seeing a Longbow salvo-fire into the middle of a bunch of cats.Iceberg wrote:I have to go with the Rapier, from Wing Commander 2. Long, sleek and menacing, bristling with guns and missiles. It LOOKS like the deadly (albeit slightly dated) machine of war that it is.
I once modified WCP/WCSO so that I carried "racks" of missiles that fired all at once to get that effect. My wing of Devestators, well, devestated the silly Nephilium formations

BTW, I would also like to see various pictures of Wing Commander fighters.

Gunstar from Last Starfighter is cool my other fav is the YF-21 from Macross Plusss the frelling fighter could do what the YF19 could and also make hyperjumps withna boosterpack but it was also thought controlled and could alter its shape for optimal performance.
