Re: Battletech technical archive

I sorta lost the thread after a series of super brutal shifts.......

Errr.... Well, just to throw things out there.
BattleMechs evolved out of the need for a highly-mobile weapons platform that could be dropped from space, perform extended operations with a minimum of supplies, and still be able to carry enough firepower to win the planned objective. The current design can perform all of these missions easily, especially when moving through open terrain.
CityTech.

This does not mean that ammunition are its only concerns. Mechs apparently do have some "POL" concerns
The need for a battlefield device that could quickly in the heated liquid nitrogen from an overheated Mechs and replace it with cooled nitrogen became especially apparent during this period because so many Periphery worlds were water-poor.
As a Mech exerts energy, its heat rises, which can cause the liquid nitrogen in its system to reach dangerous pressure levels. In such cases, a Mech will automatically vent nitrogen into the air until the pressure falls. Liquid oxygen can also be pumped through the Mech artery system to cool burning joints. However, as oxygen is more volatile than nitrogen, it is used for coolant only if the cooler nitrogen supply is exhausted.
Coolant truck, TRO 3025.

Mechs do have a significant logistic tail, or at least, has one if they wish to operate at peak effiency. Other portions include the routine maintenance that they are supposed to do or equipment would suffer potential degradation, the mention of fluids or even replacing damaged myomer muscles/damaged components.

ON the other hand, Techmanual also has the infamous piss as mech fuel entry, suggesting a longevity to mech operations, at least, if it isn't operating at peak effiency.

Similarly,
This laser specialization makes the Flashman independent on the battlefield, not tied to ammunition supply lines. The Flashman can engage the enemy as long as its pilot remains conscious,
Flashman TRO 3025.

On the other hand, the logistic requirements for battle armor are just as absurd.

Allways worrying about a Blakist Hunter-Killer team attacking, his men ate, slept and defecated in their machines, coming out just to swap power packs and put the used ones on the chargers.........Always running, avoiding combat whenever possible, not even stopping to really survey the land to figure out where they would be if Tharkad was still in one piece.......It had been three weeks since they had last spotted non-Robes............ and two months since they had picked up any sort of resistance radio traffic.
Turning point Tharkad.
Battle suits apparently operated for more than 5 years, with at least 3 weeks or up to two months without contact with any other technical support whatsoever, still functional in the cold winter environments of Tharkad. Someone remind me why Clan Elementals had to be "stripped" down to operate as headhunter units due to the extended nature of those operations again?

Anyway... my personal speculation on Clan tactics and battle philosophy, which are derived from various quotes/incidents which I shall elaborate upon later.
While the Clanners don't really practice the same level of coordination between their mech forces, and all other branches except Elementals. IIRC, Clanners dislike calling for air support if it's not absolutely vital to a mission, and one of the first things to get bidded out during their entire process.
This.

This simply isn't true. The Clans combined arms tactics are on par, or superior to their IS equivalent, although they are hindered by their honour rules and bidding. Its extremely tempting to take general statements and spin it out to say the Clans act this way.... but such statements should be taken with a pinch of salt. They are generally IS analysis which may have misunderstood Clan culture, or assume that culture= absolute or even reluctant ban.

A good example is this.
The Clans did not see the importance of protecting their supply depots or convoys. Clans never include rear-echelon functions in their bidding, so the idea that supplies could serve as targets gradually disappeared from their concept of military strategy.
Clan Wolf sourcebook.
Taken generally, this statement IS true. We don't see the Clans targeting supply convoys over battlefield, command units...... We know the Clan has lacklustre security measures, including weaker security on their mechs compared to their IS counterparts. We know the Clans don't protect their own logistic lines "heavily", or place as much importance on guarding them as do the IS.

But is this an absolute statement? No.
Clan Jade Falcon targeted the economic centre of Alkalurops in the first wave invasion. Clan Ghost Bear captured supply caches, and then used one as bait to destroy the DC raiders during the invasion. On Tukayyid itself, both Ghost Bear and Nova Cats targeted supply caches, albeit, after Comstar itself had depleted them of their own supplies.

The Clans may differ by scale of magnitude, but it isn't absolute, and definitely varies by commanders. For example, we are told as an absolute statement that Clan forces routinely devalue aerospace forces and tend to bid them away.....

YET, in Toland,
The Falcons forced the Star Guards out of the dark hollows of the Judea Jungle and chased them onto the exposed barrens of the Cantor Climb, where Falcon fighters strafed them and swift Falcon units continued to sap their remaining strength in lightning raids.
Jade Falcon sourcebook.

The CLASSIC example of combined arms tactics. Combined arms tactics has been defined by the US forces as different elements co-operating with each other to have a synergistic effect or tactics which expose one element to another. If a defender defends against a tank assault, he becomes more vulnerable to air attack or etc, and tactics are evolved to exploit this.
For a unit to be combined arms, they have to be structurally organised to be combined arms and also employ combined arms tactics.

This is exactly what we DO see. Aerospace assets are assigned at cluster level, the IS equivalent of the battalion, the same level seen. While IS companies routinely enjoy two aerospace fighters support when on independent operation, the Clans enjoy more. This even if we ignores the Triad configuration seen in Clan Snow Ravens. The "standard" configuration has the IS battalion having 6 aerospace fighter support, a recommendation mentioned in FM mercenaries. The Clans organisational doctrine attaches ten.
Infantry is intergrated at the ground level, while the flexibility of the OmniMech allows them to swap roles as needed. Similarly, it is the garrison vehicles of Smoke Jaguar which opened up the first shots fired on DC civilians at Turtle Bay, showing that even at this stage of the conflict, the SJ has assigned paramilitary forces, if not actual PGCs to garrison conquered worlds.

Similarly, the Clans do use combined arms tactics. Apart from the synergistic efforts seen above, Jade Falcon used a combination of Elemental and Aerospace scouts to protect the advance on Von Strang World, used massed airstrikes to destroy airbases and then bomb a town flat, used artillery to smash Apollo defences apart and then sent in Elementals to pick them apart........

Then there's also the Smoke Jaguar tactic which combined the use of Assault Mechs and elementals to smash a hole in the line, and then dump elementals and lighter units in to exploit the chaos.......

There is no evidence whatsoever that Clan Combined arms tactics are inferior to the IS. The only inferiority rests in that Clan mechwarriors value themselves above tankers, and we have that exact same complex for the IS mechwarriors themselves.

Because all Clan units consist of combined arms, Clan commanders can mount a diverse force more quickly than their Inner Sphere counterparts. And because Clan warriors train in heterogeneous units, they are generally better-versed in combined-arms tactics than the warriors of the Inner Sphere. This allows Clan commanders to mix and match their Mechs, Elementals, and aerospace fighters as the need arises, confident that the disparate elements will know how to work effectively together.
Ironically, the success of mercenary units such as the Legion against the Clans and the dramatic victory over the invaders won on Tukayyid by the Com Guard-an army designed from its conception as a combined-arms force-have intensified interest in Clan-style unit structures.

When he'd closed to within a half-kilometer of the maglev line, he pulled up in a skidding halt. Quickl, he brought up the Grizzard gauss rifle mounted in his Mech's right arm and the large Blankenburg pulse laser set into the left. The targeting reticle drifted a bit on his HUD but he quickly locked the weapons onto the target, the train's engine. With no hesitation, he fired.

Example of aiming, as well as extended range firing for weapons. Pulse laser official range=300m.

Galtor Campaign.
Civil Aviation.400,000,000,000 passenger-km. 20,000,000,000 freight ton-km
Motor vehicles.6,000,000 passenger cars, 2,000,000 commercial vehicles
Galtor Campaign tells us that the population of Galtor is 36,423,000 and has a habitable area of 13,3273,380.

US has a population of 311 million with 939,061 passenger kilometers at 9.83 million square kilometers.

US has a population of 311 million, with a car population of 254 million commercial cars. That's 1.2 person per car, as compared to 6 person per car for Galtor.

google
google

A better comparison might be to use world statistics for civil aviation, especially considering the scales involved(continent vs planetary travel) but I can't seem to find it....

Using this
non stat source

Galtor has a larger car population than earth (10 to 1 vs 6 to 1).
Another commonly thrown statistic is that there are more than 1 billion cars on the roads now, with a population of 7 billion, which yields roughly similar car ownership planetary wide for Galtor.

Galtor is considered a moderately advanced world, aka, 21st century world with a C rating, suffering from relatively poor industry due to its status as an agricultural world

Do they perfume away the smell as well? And how do they "reclaim" solid waste?
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

You win. There, I have said it.

Not even the stench of sweat and filth from staying in their Rottweiler battle suits registered in his reddened, blotchy notes.
As for reclaiming waste, no evidence that they did.

As for stupidty, it was just a tactical decision the soldiers did. They couldn't survive outside the suits due to the cold environment and lack of shelter as well as the Blakist threat. Hell, I find it remarkable as it is that they could unsuit and resuit themselves... Its a freaking 4 legged Battlesuit. Just imagine living in that position of days on end.

Nebfer once posted this regarding Gauss Rifles.
Tactics of duty (x6)
CH 22 x2 hypersonic, near end

At the last moment, the Bloodspiller pilot panicked and began backpedaling his Wasp, its medium laser swinging up to fire. Grayson fired first. With a shrill, harsh chirp and then a thundercrack that shattered glass for hundreds of meters around, the Gauss rifle mounted on his right arm accelerated a massive nickle-iron slug with a core of depleted uranium to hypersonic velocities.
--
The round slammed into the Wasp's upper right torso, opening a gash of a crater, ripping off the right arm entirely and sending it spinning end over end across the street. The shock staggered the little 'Mech and nearly knocked it down. Correcting his aim, Grayson sent a second hypersonic screamer squarely into the Wasp's center of mass. The impact picked the twenty-ton machine up and dropped it on its back; it slid across black pavement, striking sparks for ten meters before it came to rest.

CH 24
And as the bombardment continued, Grayson marched his Victor to the near side of the bridge, raised his Gauss rifle, and sent round after hypersonic round slamming through the massive gate. The rounds possessed no explosive, no warheads, but kinetic energy alone battered the massive gates back on warped tracks, set solid duralloy steel to glowing white hot, and brought down an avalanche of crumbling stone from the surrounding walls

CH 28 x3
A Davion Blackjack pivoted its torso to face him sixty meters away, and McCall triggered his 'Mech's left-arm Gauss rifle. The hypersonic round struck the lighter 'Mech low in the torso and to the left, punching straight through the armor in an explosion of shrapnel and scattering bits of internal circuitry.
--
Davis McCall fired again, sending a hypersonic round from his Highlander's Gauss rifle slamming into the Zeus, striking it in one bulky shoulder and spinning it halfway around.
--
With a sound like a giant thunderclap, the hypersonic projectile streaked into the center of the Zeus's back, where the protective armor was less than a third the thickness of the slabs of armor plate covering its chest.
The Zeus was driven forward a step by the incredible force of the impact, kinetic energy fusing an eight-square-meter patch of armor into a white-hot, molten mass. The projectile plunged through the 'Mech's thin back carapace like a laser beam through butter. Ricocheting off the much thicker armor encasing the power plant, the Gauss slug severed power cables, shredded the endoskeletal framework, and set off the store of long-range missiles stashed in the Zeus's right torso. As secondary explosions erupted from the 'Mech's torso, the right arm tore free, armor plates popped off, access panels blew open, and flame engulfed the machine's lower torso. An instant later, the head split apart as the cockpit canopy hinged open and the 'Mech's pilot inside rocketed clear On his ejection seat.

Black Dragon (x1)
CH 32
As if in direct response Ho Jung-V's 100-ton Pillager set down in the square, its HildCO Model 13 jump jets turning a dozen hapless onlookers into screaming torches before its great feet mercifully crushed them. The two Gauss rifles in its torso fired, the hypersonic rounds cracking like thunder before they slammed into the back of a Black Hawk-KU. One shot instantly locked the shoulder-actuator of its left arm, which carried a total of five medium lasers. Black smoke poured from the hole the other hit had punched in its armor.

The Hunters (X1)
CH 11

Still, the computer-generated hypersonic Gauss slug arrived before the slower missiles. The computer figured out the amount of damage each shot should have done in the 65-ton OmniMech, named for the nearly unkillable monsters of Irish myth. Like its namesake, the Cauldron-Born shrugged off the damage and turned to face its assailant.

Sword of Fire (x3)
CH 17
Barclay returned the Vindicator's fire with another pair of hypersonic Gauss slugs, backed up by a stuttering blast of laser fire from her 'Mech's pulse lasers. The vicious attack savaged the smaller 'Mech, leaving huge, glowing craters in the machine's right torso and right arm. Incredibly, the smaller machine stayed on its feet. Barclay gaped at the sight of the shot-riddled Vindicator, seemingly defiant in the face of her superior firepower. Hot anger welled up inside her.

CH 20 (Protomechs)
In response MacLeod pointed his right arm at the darting figure and triggered the Grizzard Gauss rifle mounted in that vambrace. The hypersonic slug streaked across the intervening gap to smash his assailant into dust. But, the fast-moving miniature 'Mech wasn't there when the Gauss slug arrived. So rapid was its movement that MacLeod had trouble tracking his target effectively. The head-size chunk of nickel-iron slammed into the ferrocrete pavement of the factory compound, throwing shards of gray, iron-reinforced concrete around like shrapnel. MacLeod tried to walk fire from his pulse laser into the enemy machine, but the Clanner moved too quickly for his 'Mech's pivoting torso to follow. The strobing laser bolts slashed into one of the factory buildings, leaving a series of smoking holes in their wake.

CH 22
Instinctively, she brought her 'Mech to a skidding halt and settled the screen-projected targeting discrete onto the target's center of mass. Twin bolts of azure energy lanced into the humanoid shape before her, followed by a hypersonic Gauss rifle slug. The enemy machine, now identified by her computer's warbook subroutine as a Loki Prime, took both PPC blasts in the right arm.

Shadows of War (x1)
CH 9
Cursing, Winston dropped the scarlet HUD-generated targeting reticle over the battered Clan 'Mech's center of mass. Caressing the triggers, she sent a pair of laser lances into the odd, petal-like structure on the Clan OmniMech's torso. A chunk of nickel-iron, moving at hypersonic speed, slammed into the Mad Cat's back-slanting thigh, smashing halfway through the heavy leg armor before ricocheting away

Flashpoint (x1)
CH 14
The Bushwacker traded another one-two combination of autocannon and laser against the Gunslinger's hasty—and only—gauss shot, the hypersonic slug smashing her right flank protection into ruin as she worried away more of the Gunslinger's heavier armor.

Call of Duty (x3)
CH 1
The Hollander further slowed its run and fired its only weapon, the massive gauss rifle jutting from one of its shoulders. The silver blur of the deadly gauss slug raced at hypersonic speed toward Archer's 'Mech, missing him by only a couple of meters.

CH 8
But the Vulcan did not remain in the fight long. Rhonda's silvery gauss slug had done its job. The hypersonic slug had slammed into the right thigh of the Vulcan with such force that the smaller 'Mech spun as if dancing a jig. As it came back around, she could see that the leg armor was all but gone and that what was left of the leg was mere mangled debris, torn myomer muscle, and leaking coolant. The Vulcan dropped from her field of vision as she moved to the side, worried about how Shorty was faring.

CH 13
"Looks like we have them on the run," Damon Huntt added as he brought his War Dog up. He fired his gauss rifle, which found its mark on the Thug that Archer had missed. The hypersonic slug buried itself in the mashed armor plating on the Thug's left shin. Not deterred, the Irregular 'Mech fired its pair of PPCs at an Avenger SRM carrier, sending armor spraying in every direction.

The Dying Time (x1)
CH 17
Lori fired the paired medium pulse lasers set into her Victor's much-abused left vambrace, and touched off the gauss rifle again for good measure. The pale green energy darts chewed into the enemy machine's legs, while the gauss rifle's hypersonic slug smashed into almost the same spot as the first shot.

Storms of fate (x1)
CH 4
"Surrender!" he called out to his opposite number just as the Falconer's gauss rifle caved in his BattleMech's left knee joint.
The raw kinetic force of the hypersonic mass shattered what was left of the armor, snapping the Exterminator's leg out straight and wrenching it back. Warning lights for his 'Mech's upper leg actuator and hip joint flared red, and the machine spun lazily to the right.

Operation Audacity (x3)
CH 2
Without hesitation, the enemy War Dog unleashed a silvery hypersonic slug from its gauss rifle. Finding its mark, the round plowed deep into Roshak's already damaged right leg, shearing off shards of armor plate and leaving other pieces looking as if they'd been torn by a jagged set of teeth. Roshak throttled his 'Mech forward, swinging the targeting reticle of his primary display onto the War Dog's image just as it faded back behind a cluster of thick trees.

He bit his lip, then said, "All forces, download my coordinates and concentrate on the roadway of my current position."

CH 7
Adam held his stand on the hill and locked onto a rushing Hellhound. The Falcon 'Mech moved into the valley below and began to sweep to his left as Adam locked onto it. He fired two of his gauss rifle slugs, and the Thunder Hawk almost lifted in the air from the force of their launch. Both hypersonic slugs found their marks on the running Falcon 'Mech. One hit in the Hellhound's right torso, cratering the armor plating like a massive bullet wound on man. The other slug tore into the hip joint.

CH 17
He twisted his Thunder Hawk around toward the advancing Falcons, bringing his targeting reticle onto the Black Hawk that had fired at him. As the tone of target-lock rang in his ears and through his brain, he let loose with a pair of his deadly gauss rifles, their hypersonic rounds slamming soundlessly into the Black Hawk. It was time to make them pay for their boldness.

End Game (x6)
CH 1
"Command 'Mech," he called out as he short-cycled his autocannon and jerked at the trigger. Pressed too hard, too fast, his right-arm cannon jammed. The other spat a long tongue of fire toward the advancing 'Mech, smashing eighty-millimeter slugs into its chest. "Banshee, 6S. On Kow—" It was all he had time for as the Banshee's heavy gauss rifle flashed with coil discharge and accelerated 250 kilograms of nickel-ferrous material up toward hypersonic speeds straight into his JagerMech's right side.

CH 14
An attack that never came as a Victor, the prince's namesake 'Mech, smashed a gauss slug through what was left of the Typhoon's right side. The hypersonic mass spent most of its kinetic energy in the crew compartment, leaving the UAV a gutted shell.

CH 15
A new gauss slug loaded through the breech, and capacitors discharged through acceleration coils, pulling the nickel-ferrous mass up to hypersonic velocity. The silver blur flashed out from the end of the rifle, and Tancred quickly toggled for his particle cannon as well, which chased after the slug with an arc of man-made lightning. Both slammed into the other assault 'Mech with stunning force, smashing armor into shards and splinters and cutting a deep, angry furrow up one side.

CH 27
Peter braced the Fafnir forward, leaning into the heavy recoil as each of his gauss rifles spat out a hypersonic mass. Both took the Viking in the left leg as the missile exhaust cleared on a light wind. One gauss slug lodged itself in the hip, fouling the joint. The second smashed through the lower leg actuator, gimping the ninety-ton machine and all but rooting it in place.

CH 29
Peter's gauss rifles spoke again and again. He cycled them as fast as he could, determined to distract his aunt from the distraught Cestus and any more of his warriors who might arrive. One hypersonic slug missed wide, punching through a building behind the Hauptmann and leaving an impressive wound behind. His others all slammed home, cratering Nondi's armor and wrenching her 'Mech's right arm so far back in its shoulder socket that it froze.

CH 30
The ex-champion of Solaris was not about to stumble over his own feet, not in a 'Mech he piloted as if born to it. He walked quickly out of the perilous, leaning position, moving back several meters. Enough that the blue-and-red militia Falconer had a clean shot at Prometheus, able to slam home the gauss slug no doubt meant for Kai's back into Victor's midriff.
Kai spun Yen-lo-wang and hurled an identical hypersonic mass back at the Falconer, still faster on the trigger—even in an awkward cross-body shot—than Victor would ever be. Prometheus was not to be forgotten, however. Its trio of pulse lasers chewed emerald teeth into the Falconer's side, sending armor streaming down to the ground in fiery runnels. Victor also pulled into an extra-long burst form his twelve-centimeter autocannon, digging slugs tipped with depleted uranium in behind the laserfire damage

By temptation and by War (x1)
CH 11
High-energy capacitors dumped their stored power into a series of coils, creating a magnetic funnel that latched onto the nickel-ferrous mass loaded into the Gauss rifle’s acceleration chamber. In a fraction of a second the mass had been driven up to hypersonic speeds, flashing down the short city block and into the left knee of the Wasp.

Flight of the Falcon (x1)
CH 32
Fifty meters to her left, MechWarrior Tyrus’Cougar staggered as a hypersonic nickel-ferrous slug from a BattleMech Gauss rifle took it just to the left and below its protruding cockpit

Hunters of the Deep (x2)
CH 12
“There,” Jesup interrupted, as the arm of Torrin’s Mad Cat III tore away under the horrific assault of twin hypersonic Gauss rounds from the Beta Sun Cobra. The fight ended immediately, the Beta warrior victorious.

CH 16
He closed his eyes, but he could almost predict where her footfalls would echo next in the small room, where her ministrations would take her, in a path as surely determined as a hypersonic Gauss round slung from a ’Mech.

Illusions of Victory (x1)
CH 23
One of the nickel-ferrous slugs, launched at incredible velocity, impacted directly centerline, smashing aside nearly every ounce of armor but failing to penetrate to the vulnerable skeleton beneath. The second slug hit the Banshee against the right hip, cracking the armor case protecting its side and pushing support struts through the bulky shielding of the 'Mech's extralight fusion engine.

25 years of art & fiction (x1)

The abominations had smuggled a towed Gauss rifle into the structure, and despite the fire that
the building had taken, they were still operative. The hypersonic shot had traced a path through
the air and hit warrior Dimitri’s Nova.

proven to be a frighteningly effective hunter-killer team

Project Phoenix (x1)
Intro
I was getting ready for to right my own epitaph, when a barely seen hypersonic slug skipped across the ground to slam into the Penetrator's lower right leg. It was Driscoll's Battlemeaster, propping itself up on one arm and levering its right straight out.

He followed up that hit with another, the Gauss round shattering away armor and pulverizing the hip joint.

Field Manual Federated Suns (x1)
Intro

hypersonic nickel slugs fired by his Alacorns slamming into the already beleagured group.
For some fucking odd reason, I misplaced my copy of Tac/Strat Ops, where I was going to post and rebut Focht asinine comment that the Clans don't do combined arms warfare and offer a retcon..... So.... No joy on that project for now.

Well. To throw something together outside of the Clans project...
A: I'm not sure of all the details. Many finer points were worked out secretly in the Black Room. About two weeks after the survey report, Luthien issued reports to the troops in field. About 48 hours later, two regiments of Benjamin Regulars were ready to move, but it took another three weeks for the Galedon regiment to reach the staging area. Even then, the regiments waited at the final jump points for another two weeks before the final orders were released.
Q: What took so long?
A: I don't know. Just the normal bureaucratic foul-ups, I imagine.
Q: So it took about seven weeks for Kurita to attack?
A: Just about. There was no hurry. Intelligence reports indicated that no material had left the planet...
The Galtor Campaign
The deployment speed of regular mech forces for the Kuritians. For some more context, it could had taken HPG communications anywhere between hours to days to reach the respective planet, since the units may have been present at a B station.

Galtor was a former Benjamin District world, which explains the distance and why it took 3 weeks for the Galedon regiment to reach the staging area. Despite the travails of jumpship and dropship travel, dispersed forces(the 3rd Benjamin Regular occupied the fortified moons of the Tripoli system), House Kurita was able to cobble and deploy an invasion force with its logistic support within 3 weeks.

The final deployment orders took two weeks to issue, something abnormal and a reference to bureaucratic foul up was made. However, it could also have reflected Takashi own internal court politics, which was the reason why the invasion force drew upon Galedon forces, and had as its commander the Galedon Warlord.

Operations were not alone though.
In coordination with the above multi-regimental raid, another assault battalion assaulted Marduk, activity bustled along the Kurita border and was picked up by the Davions, jamming their own command network with calls for reinforcements and of course, the ineveitable sabotage campaign, where a spy disabled a jumpstation recharge and sabotage was also blamed for the explosion in a dropship that destroyed 2 battalions and crippled spaceport facillities, a force meant to lie in ambush for the anticipated Kuritian raid.

Also, note that this multiple regimental raid proves on its own that the scale of Btech conflict is varied, and not just restricted to small scale skirmishes. There is a limit to how large it can go, as the Battletech universe is starved of combat units in comparison to virtually every other franchise but well......

Save for a few large lasers or particle projection cannons used to destroy meteors, most transport JumpShips have no weapons. The anti-meteor guns are rarely powerful enough to damage an armored spacecraft,
Battlespace.

From wikipedia, meoteors may be up to 10m in size. This suggests that normal spaceship hulls are strong enough to resist thermal attacks, suggesting that it may be strong enough to resist 1.3 kilotons worth of energy.

The fighting has left both Terra Firma and Capolla devastated. On Terra Firma, only two of the planet's thirty-six spaceports remain operational. On Capolla, only one spaceport of twenty-one is open to traffic. These operational spaceports-located near each planet's largest cities-are guarded by garrisons of the Fist of Mokal. Both planet's manufacturing facilities and cities contain vast tracts of rubble, and precious farmlands have been burned. Only Terra Firma's vast forest-the Okeenog Woodlands-and Capolla's numerous jungles escaped the devastation.
Capolla is a world covered by vast mountain ranges filled with huge ore deposits and numerous jungles. Most of Capolla's cities lie between the mountain ranges.
Chaos March sourcebook
Scale of space transport on the two planets and the devastation inflicted.

Of note is the large scale of collateral destruction inflicted by Battletech combat. The conflict was instigated by hit and run attacks by Liao guerillas, until Marik mercenaries gave them sufficient strength to overwhelm the Lyran garrison. Months of civil war between the stragglers and counter-guerilla movements caused the scale of destruction seen here. One should note that even with this scale of conflict, no regular Mech regiment was assigned to the planet

The mercenary support were the Blackhearts, a mercenary unit descended from the SAS 77th SOG, which tries to restrain itself from collateral damage. Furthermore, after defeating the Lyran garrison, they left before the civil war heated up.

Therefore, the existing destruction to the spaceports, cities and farmland were inflicted by indigenous guerilla forces on planet, which bespoke of the armed resources available to such units. Note that they were supposed to provide resistance against mech equipped mercenaries, suggesting that they should comprise of some heavy equipment. Alternatively, there exist one company of mechs under the command of the independent power of the TerraFirma confederation.

Analysis of the Vandalia Monitor's blood chemistry indicated compatibility with the Human nervous system and also proved to be similar to certain synthetic antipsychotic drugs developed by biochemists in the 2580s.

In 2616, the Davion government authorized full-scale terraforming and colonization. The desert world of Vandalia began to blossom, causing(as terraforming usually does) an ecological crisis among the wild-life adapted to the former environment. The Vandalia Monitors started to die out, with only laboratory specimens safe from the environmental changes to their former habitat.
It was in 2639 that researchers discovered the extraordinary properties of the Vandalia Monitor's blood chemistry. Preliminary findings indicated that a psychoactive chemical synthesized from the lizard's blood would either calm people prone to violence or completely prevent such impulses without impairing the individual's functioning. In other words, a person treated with an extract from the Monitor's blood remained clearheaded, able to work and play normally, free from the abnormal excitation of violent reactions as well as the fog-brained side effects of similar drugs..............

If administered to politicians, the drug would probably have prevented the warfare that would eventually ravage the Inner Sphere.

It was not to be. Although the chemical formula can be synthesized artificially, it is quite volatile, lasting only a few minutes to a few hours under laboratory conditions. Apparently, there is a still-unknown factor in the live lizard's own blood chemistry that acts as a stabilizing agent to prevent the psychoactive chemical from deteriorating when extracted from the blood.
Specimens of the Vandalia Monitor were lifted offworld when it became evident that terraforming was pushing the lizard toward extinction. They exist today on one of our Blessed Order's worlds 100 parsecs rimward of Lyran space, more than 730 light years from Terra.......

From a report to the First Circuit of Comstar, 14 January 3024 Comstar Archives, Terra.
House Davion, The Federated Suns pg 54
Several things.

1. Within 20 years, they introduced enough water to a desert planet that it began to bloom and drive the extinction process of native wildlife. The world is only described as marginally habitable and that there were many species that could co-exist with human life, the Monitor being one of them. The scale of the terraforming was sufficient that it introduced enough water to turn desert to flowering gardens within 23 years, but without outright destroying life.

Given the conditions, it could be as simple as massive irrigration and other water projects to start a water cycle to as complex as weather manipulation on the scale of the atomsphere generators on Venus.

2. The details are a bit fudgy, but it suggests an upper limit of 50 years before the Monitor pharmacological properties was noticed for exploitation. Its much likely to be lower as the text says that the drugs were developed in 2580, and that the planet became a haven for zoological experiment in the 27th century, suggesting a start date after 2600.

3. The IS has drugs that dull the aggressive nature of humans, something that Comstar adept believed would "end war". One can easily imagine how this would had been exploited on POWs during the Jihad.

4. We learn that Comstar has a world in the Periphery, where it has been attempting to breed the monitor for 3 generations. Assuming similar lifespan to terrestrial reptiles, that would indicate that the world has been under Comstar control for at least 45 years. Comstar Explorer Corp first mission began in 2961, so this might had been the fruits of their exploration, and provide more depth to their scientific experiments, which began after 2977. This world has most likely been revealed to the IS under Comstar declassification of their maps post 3052, but it might not.

The 1st Chesterton absorbed punishing losses in the ensuing ground action, but the regiment's jump troops and air-mobile artillery counterattacked and captured a Leopard DropShip, ultimately turning the tide against the Marik attackers.

the factory on New Earth turns out several hundred customized units each year, a number sufficient to fulfill both military and civil orders from the bare-bones cargo model to more advanced combat models.
Karnov UV transport, TRO 3058 Upgrade.

A pathethically small number of helicopters, even if we were to assume that customisation reduces production speed significantly. For comparison, the Draconis Combine built 1300 Jenners between two factories, and this was with reduced spare parts during the 1st Succession Wars.

Also, the idea that the IS only requires several hundred new Karnovs, this even though the Karnov ultimately represent the Chinook, or at least "heavy" transport helicopter is absurdly miminalist.

More than 250 years ago, Aleksandr Kerensky, Protector-General of the star League, left known space. With him he took nearly half the Mechwarriors, Battlemechs and Support personnel in the Inner Sphere.
TRO 3050.

The campaign cost more than half of General Kerensky's divisions, including 46 of the remaining 82 Mech divisions, advanced weapons that mankind has been unable to replace. From the begining of the Periphery uprising to the Exodus of General Kerensky and his remaining loyal troops, the SLDF was reduced from a force of 486 divisions to one of 113 divisions.Even with such terrifying losses, General Kerensky took with him a force stronger than any that remained.
Fall of an Empire, Star League Sourcebook.

Though the Star League Defense Forces remained loyal to General Aleksandr Kerensky through frightening times and 115 divisions joined him on his voyage into the unknown, there were some who stayed behind.
The Rise and Fall of the Star League, Star League Sourcebook.

Assuming that rheoteric is accurate, this suggests that 435 Mech regiments comprise of half of the mech regiments remainding in the Inner Sphere. The 50 mech divisions of the Periphery were mostly mauled after the Vanenburg uprising, but ten years of rampant secret production/purchase could field 300 Mech regiments, a force almost equal to the House Lords extant might. We never did find out whether the destruction of the Rim Worlds Republic scattered the Periphery mech production forever, but it does cast a new light on how productive the New Vandenburg facillities are and the potential ability to sustain old Warhammers in the post 3050 universe. And of course, Project Phoenix and the Word of Blake resurrection of those facillities.

One should also point out that despite the destruction of the Succession Wars, the Great Houses were able to increase their mech strength, albeit by a very small margin.

The caveat assumes of course that the units were anywhere intact, which it isn't. Similarly, we know that the SLDF mothballed a significant portion of its equipment, to be taken over by Comstar, and that certain divisions were either destroyed or assimilated by Comstar during its conquest of Earth. This could mean that the Great House existing military might was significantly smaller at the start of the First Succession War, but their industrial production was sufficient to expand their military at the end of the 4th Succession War.

This viewpoint is partially supported by the Invading Clans sourcebook, which states that the Great Houses were short of soldiers during the 1st Succession war, an inverse of the Clan situation.

He is also the strongest warrior in Clan Ghost Bear. Standing nearly three meters tall and weighing more than 500 kilograms, it is said he can defeat other Elementals when they are in battle armor and he is not. His massive size is something of a handicap, however, as even Clan scientists cannot counter the stress on his spine. Now suffering chronic back pain,
Warden Clans

It will be interesting to get a doctor to weigh in on this, but while an outlier, Star Colonel Isaac shows the upper limits of Clan biotech.

There is...... literally nothing technologically preventing the Clans from getting another such specimen, although the nature vs nurture argument is still ongoing in Clan space. Depending on how much retcon happens, we do know that certain Clans such as Clan Jade Falcon practised breeding so recursively that one of the officers at Twycross closely resembled the Star League Warrior.

Assuming similar training and nutrition standards was put in place, with a large enough numbers of clans breedsman in the sibok, another such specimen could come forth even without genetech slicing.

Its odd that they said Clan tech couldn't compensate for back pain though....... since just why is this so? The Maenai Domini showcase that spinal surgery, the Clans ability to regrow limbs must also include regrowing nerves or causing nerves to grow, its possible to imagine a myomer muscle and metal spinal replacement solving the problem.
