Hey now, the religious fanatic was RIGHT! She was correct that if baltar was elected; everything would be fucked up!
It's fascinating that everyone here is rooting for the election-stealing believer who runs on a platform of "the Gods will show us to a myhtical land" while demonizing the fair-playing scientist :)

And last week, everyone was waving around their Baltar for Prez flags :)

Funny what a little bit of hindsight can do.

I still think Zarek would've been the best President.

Zarek is the real tragedy. Not a word out of him after election. I strongly suspect he died on Cloud 9.

Usually when a character is missing, you just chalk it up to SAG rules, but he was all over that episode.

I highly doubt they killed off Richard Hatch's character on Cloud 9 without it being mentioned. He's not liable to hang out there anyway.

This may have already been addressed in an episode in season one I didn't see yet, but what is Zarek's motivation? He seems like a smart, intelligent man. Why does he seek to undermine the fleet?

I'm assuming this means you didnt see the S1 Ep 2 entitled "Water".

Zarek is a terrorist/revolutionary turned politician. he was actually on the prison ship initially but gianed his freedom by mining for frozen water in the early season. He's supposed to be very lossely based on a combination of Mandela/Arafat.

He's never given up his original utopian goals and plans to use any method to gain conteol of the fleet. He first tried to run for Vice president agaisnt Baltar (and would then have likely assaniated Roslin). Then later he assisted Roslin in her rebellion against Adama. he tried to kill Lee to remove a possible rival. (Lee was Roslin's main advisor during her rebellion). Then he helped Lee track down the black market boss. Only to assume control of the black market afterwards. Now he's allied with fmr rival Baltar agaisnt Roslin.

Slight nit-pick. "Water" was episode two. But Zerek was not introduced until epsidode three, "Bastille Day."

I don't think he quite realized what a disaster President Baltar would have been. Or maybe he did, and he planned on usurping power from Baltar, or even winning the presidency after four years of Baltar's mismanagement. Nobody suspected the Cylons were coming back, I don't think, or Adama would have fought tooth and nail to keep the two battlestars in shape.

I strongly suspect, by the way, that Baltar did everything he could to draw personnel off of the battlestars in order to weaken Adama. Remember, Adama was responsible for one coup already, and he actually respected Laura Roslin. I wonder if Adama wasn't biding his time, letting Baltar run the settlement into the ground until the people supported a second coup. At any rate, the Cylons screwed up everybody's plans.

Even in the long run, if they did settle New Caprica and it managed to grow into a large modernized world.. how much of a fleet could they build without expanding beyond the protective ionization thingy? And in that time, how far would the Cylons have grown?

ah my mistake. I remembered that they used prisoners to mine for water and I thought it was the same episode where Boomer blew up the water tanks

NO he's ambitious, everything he does is to accumulate personal power for himself. Once Baltar was elected Zarek would have been the effective #2 politician. He would have been Dick Cheney to Baltar's GW Bush. Not to mention also running the black market.

Incidentally where do you get the idea that he's wrecking the fleet ?

It's from the novelisation for the mini-series.

Just watched it. Great episode. They managed to fit in a ton of stuff without leaving you feeling like it was rushed.

Although the nuclear detonation being identifiable a light-year away was stretching the bounds of plausibility. Either those are some damn powerful nukes, or Cylon sensors are incredibly sensitive.
